Smith, Baxter and Larimore, Jane

Posted: 8 May 2003 10:55AM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: Smith, Larimore, Larymore, Elliott, Herd
I have Smith/Mayfield and Smith/Elliott ancestors from Morgan County. I'd be happy to share what I have, but am looking for more.

The first family was:
Baxter Smith, b. bet. 1794-1798, probably in Kentucky (one census says TN) wife: Jane Larimore, b. abt. 1800, North Carolina (one census says KY). I think Baxter's parents were Margaret Mayfield and Thomas Smith. (Though I have not found a connection, there are past connections between Mayfield and Baxter families, and this might have been his mother's line.) I believe Jane was the dau. of Richard and Nancy Larimore.

I am stymied trying to find Baxter Smith's heritage or what happened to the families of his children, and would welcome any information.

I believe Baxter and Jane's children were:

1. Zimri Smith, b. ca. 1826, who married Elizabeth Larymore (a cousin, I think, despite the difference in spelling from his
mother's name). She was b. ca. 1829. They were married August 8, 1849, Morgan Co., Mo. I believe they had two children, Martha Jane Smith, b. ca. 1849, and Rebecca Smith, b. ca. 1859.

2. James Smith, b. ca. 1828, who married Ann Eliza Herd on July 17,1853, Morgan County, Missouri. She was b. ca. 1836. They had a child, L. B. Smith, b. ca. 1860.

3. Nancy S. Smith, b. July 1, 1832 in Morgan Co., Mo., (my ancestor), d. March 20, 1921 at the home of her son John W.
Elliott in Douglas Co., Mo.. She married John W. Elliott on Jan. 27, 1859, in Morgan County, Mo. He was b. May 9, 1838, and d. Jan. 11, 1901 in Douglas Co., Mo.

4. Elizabeth Smith, b. ca. 1836, probably in Morgan Co., Mo. I could not find an identifiable marriage for Elizabeth, although she shows up in her parents' home with a small child on one census, and possibly next door to them on another census, as Elizabeth Ford, with a dau. Cordelia. Not positive about Elizabeth Ford.

Here are some Smith and Elliott notes I have collected along the way:

There was a Col. Baxter Smith in 4th Tn. Cav. Regt. at Woodbury TN in 1883. Don't know if there is any relationship.

Green County, Kentucky was formed from Lincoln and Nelson Counties. It was the 16th to be formed and was created on 20 Dec 1792. Page 387.

Gary Conwell: I have copies of Baxter Smith and family from the 1840 to 1870 census in Morgan Co., MO. I did not find them in the 1830 index and the one 1820 "index" (MO. was not a state til 1821) is more like a tax list and I saw that in Salt Lake City.

Baxter may have had a brother and a son named Zimri.
