I saw your message about the picture of Roy Copeland. I received it in my email as part of Ancestry.com's services. Roy Copeland was my dad's cousin, or perhaps this was his uncle. I'm still working on this part of the family so I'm not real clear on it. I know that Ray Copeland was his cousin. Do you know if Roy was Ray's brother, or dad? Roy and Ralph definitely go together somehow. My dad always mentioned them together. I actually wouldn't mind having the picture if you wouldn't mind, as he's fairly close kin to me.
By the way, my name is Olivia D'Alessandro (married) my maiden name was Smith. My father was Robert Fulton Smith, son of Thomas Vetile Smith and Minnie Hodges.

My 4ggrandparents Pleasant and Sarah Cowan Chitwood had 12 children, among them William [1801-1842] who married Cecelia Whitecotton [1807-1878] and Andrew [1817-1865] who married Elizabeth Whitecotton [1818-1900].

James Chitwood, father of Pleasant and some of the descendants of CAPT James Chitwood and moved to Campbell County TN from Rutherford County NC about 1792. CAPT James was the uncle of my James; my James' father was Richard Chitwood who died in Rutherford County in 1785.

I have another possible daughter of Aaron Whitecotton--Nancy who married Hiram Ross. I have NOT verified this info, it came from a different source.

I think James Bell in his "History of Early Reynolds County" makes a comment about the changing of the name from Whitecotton to W. Cotton. I cannot readily put my hands on the book but I am sure someone out there can provide the source.

Be glad to share my info if anyone is interested.

judith arnn-knight

Cheryl, I don't have access to my notes and files today, so to answer your question about James Whitecotton I went to "RootsWeb WorldConnect" and did a simple search for James Whitecotton,d. in KY, the following is what I found. You will have to check the accuracy yourself. But it looks close to what I have in my files.

ID: I22073
Name: James Whitecotton
Sex: M
Birth: 14 MAR 1748/49 in Stafford Co. Virginia
Death: AFT 1844 in Marion Co. Kentucky

Father: George Whitecotton b: 1729 in Stafford Co. Virginia
Mother: Mary Harris b: 20 JAN 1729/30

Marriage 1 Ruth Newton Hudspeth b: ABT 1750 in Stafford Co. Virginia
Children
Isaac Newton Whitecotton b: ABT 1767
Axton Whitecotton b: ABT 1770
George Whitecotton b: ABT 1772
Moses Whitecotton b: 7 JUL 1777
Mary Whitecotton b: ABT 1780 in Kentucky
Aaron Whitecotton b: ABT 1780
Sarah Whitecotton b: ABT 1784
Catherine Whitecotton b: ABT 1784
James Whitecotton b: 13 MAY 1793
Jane Whitecotton b: ABT 1797
Nancy Whitecotton b: ABT 1799
Ruth Whitecotton b: ABT 1800

I found the following by doing a similar search as above.
Some of the info I have been able to confirm and some I have not yet tried to confirm. Take it and run with it.

James Whitecotton b 1755 Stafford Co VA; m Ruth Newton HUDSPETH; died June 7, 1849 Pleasant Run, Marion Co KY. Enlisted 1776 in Captain William Fountain's company, which marched to Charlottesville VA to join the regiment commanded by Col Woodford & Lt Col Charles Scott. This unit marched to Williamsburg VA and on to "Long Bridge" where the regiment met & defeated the British. James re-enlisted in 1778. Later was posted at Kaskaskia IL to help defend settlers from Indians, under George Rogers Clark. Later lived Hampshire Co VA, which part became Hardy Co W VA, then later still migrated to Washington, Mercer and Marion Co KY. Source: James' Rev War pension records; DAR Patriot Index (1966)

Everything above was something someone else has put on line and I found just by doing a simple search. I will look in my reocords for the Aaron Whitecotton article.

Jim Morris
Isaac White Cotton, b.May 23, 1816, Campbell, TN, d. Feb. 19, 1876, Reynolds County, Missouri. Son of Aaron Whitecotton and Nancy Hatfield. This is one of my lines. I go through Dorcas Whitecotton Pennington, Isaac's sister. I visited Aaron's and Nancy's gravesite last month. You will find Isaac in the 1850 and 1860 census in Reynolds County, MO.

Jim

Cheryl, I don't think Nancy Ann and John L. Smith ever moved after they got to their new home on Pine Valley. However, I do think they lived in Shannon County, perhaps Carter County and for sure Reynolds County. That portion of Reynolds County was part of Shannon when they got there.

Whitecotton, Cotton, Smith, Chitwood, Rayfield, Dickson, Hampton, Helvey, Mann, Muriel, Thornton, Copeland, Kelly, Chilton and Carter are just a few of many related clans in that particular area, and, I know I have left out some of them, but you should look at all of these families for clues. County lines didn't mean much back then. Look at topo maps of the area and follow the watershed areas for clues of how they spread out. Start in the north part of Reynolds county where it touches Iron county and follow Black River down. You will find family all along it and up each tributary. The same with Sinking Creek, Logan Creek, Webb Creek, Pine Valley and all along Current River From Round Springs down to below Chilton. The counties to look in are Iron, Reynolds, early Washington, Wayne, Carter Early Ripley, Shannon, Texas and Dent. Some of these families can even be found in St. Francis County.

Good hunting
Jim Morris

Judith, to my knowledge, your information is totally correct. Most if not all of the Whitecottons changed their name to Cotton and retained the W from Whitecotton as their middle initial. And, yes Bell referred to this in the book. Tonight when I get home I can look that up. Goodspeed also had some Whitecotton information. I once read a short biographical sketch about Aaron Whitecotten written by someone in Scott County, TN after the Whitecottons were in Missouri and I believe it was in Goodspeed's history of Scott County, TN. One must remember that both Bell and Goodspeed were relying upon the accuracy of third parties for their information and that not all that they published was as accuate as we would wish it to be.

Our lines are very similar. I am related to the Whitecottons on my paternal side and my mother was a Chitwood. There is a memorial in Scott County, TN honoring Rev. War soldiers. I believe it's in Winfield TN (formerly Chitwood, TN). Among those of whom they are honoring is the James' you spoke of as your James, as well as another of my relatives with Reynolds County kin, Joseph Hatfield. And by the way, Aaron Whitecottons father, James Whitecotton, also fought in the Rev. War. You and I should compare notes and share information as I believe our Chitwood line does not diverge until we get down past Jonathan b. 1835, son of Hugh b. 1812.

Jim Morris

Hi Sandy, I had to reread some of the articles in the "OLD Reynolds" book to find that Murriel Springs, Tainter and Ruble all refer to the same approximate location. Where is Helvey? For some reason I had Murriel Springs mixed up with one of the springs farther down Webb Valley and would have sworn that I knew the exact location. I really enjoy reading and rereading the articles your father and others wrote. I also noticed you are researching the Vineyards. My wife and I are finding this family in association with ours not only in Reynolds County but also in Washington County.

Jim Morris

My wife does not trust me with old photos or documents. However, I stay in contact with some of the Copeland researchers, most of whom are living in Ok. and TX. and I'm sure someone will want it. Personally, I like to see that sort of history go where it can be shared. The historical society in Ellington is trying to save as many old photos as possible. My Copeland ties are way back with the early Webbs and comes down through the Rayfields. I can guess where you are finding these photos. Barbara and I are very sorry for your loss. Lillian was a gracious lady and will be missed. We lost my grandmother, Ossie (Rayfield) Chitwood, last Oct. It seems like funerals are the only thing getting us down there on a regular basis. Thank you for offering. Are there any old photos of the spring from the time period when Barbara's grandpa and grandma Helvey would have lived at Ruble? 1940's-1960's? If you wish you can contact us at this email address cbjames49@yahoo.com

Jim Morris

Hi Sandy, we are fast becomming the "older generation". I don't like putting the names of living people on the internet without their knowledge so I'll make you guess which neighbor of yours worked for the old IGA store in Ellington for years and knew everyone in the southern Reynolds county area. She might be able to ID pictures. I don't know who the oldest living Hampton or Thurman would be and there are more than one of the Dee Rayfield family left. The nursing home and senior housing across from Brawley Park are both full of treasures waiting to be mined. You might try to find out who are the oldest living members of Bethleham Church. As a church, Lower Doe Run didn't come into being until the Lake made Pinedale move off of Logan in the 1940's. I have not researched the Vineyards at all. However, we are finding them buried in the same places where we find our families.
I was so excited to find some one else searching for Whitecottons.

My ggg grandmother was Nancy Ann Whitecotton born to Aaron and Nancy Whitecotton 13 Feb 1820 in Campbell Co. TN. Nancy Ann married John L. Smith on 15 Nov. 1840.
The 3rd son of Nancy Ann and John L. Smith, Daniel Carpenter Smith, my gg grand father was the first of their 12 children to be born outside of TN in Shannon County, MO.
At the time of Daniel's birth in 1845, the whole family was living in Shannon County, Missouri. Over a period of time there were Whitecotton decendants also living in Carter and Reynolds Counties.
Daniel Smith married Dicy Hampton and their daughter Tennessee Smith married John Anderson Coleman. My Chilton and Carter roots are twisted through my Coleman line.

The information that I had for Aaron was that he was born in Sasquachy, VA in 1790 and per an 1818 tax record had moved to TN. I believe the discrepancy in birth places may be because of the changing boundaries between the 2 states in the late 18th century.
I found a biography for Dr. Tolman W. Cotton grandson of Aaron and Nancy Whitecotton son of Smith Whitecotton written by Goodspeed at the following:

http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/mo/carter/bios/cotton11...

It has a few more notes on the Whitecotton family.

I would love to share any info.
Thanks,
Cheryl
George W Finley	35
John Finley 2
Mercy Finley 0
Svilda Finley 20 (I think this is Sirilda)

They are in the 1850 census for Reynolds County, District 76. But I can not find them agian after that. Anyone have a suggestion? I find it hard to believe they all died before the 1860 census. Any suggestions? If indeed they all did die in Reynolds county before 1860, does anyone know what cemetery they may be in ? (around District 76)

Thanks! ~Ida

Murrill Spring is located on private property right on HH Hwy in Reynolds County. There is a large spring house built over it now. It used to be completely open and a tin cup was furnished for people to stop for a drink (ugh). It is located 10 miles from Ellington and 18 miles from Piedmont.

I don't know where "Helvey" is! Never heard of it. I assume you know where the Helvey Cemetery is. I am researching the Vineyards because of Permelia (Annie) Vineyard Hackworth. I have come across some old pictures which I have been trying to identify. Some are of Birdie Vineyard Cloonan and some of Allie Murrill Vineyard. Do you have living relatives that might be able to identify old pictures?

Sandy
