Joseph Edward Skaggs, son of the late Erastus and Nancy Skaggs, was born in Madison County, Missori on July 6, 1863, and departed this life at his home in Flat River, on Friday, June 27, 1947, aged 83 years ll months 21 days.
On June 2, 1889 he was married to Elizabeth Eden, and they were the parents of seven children, six of whom survive. Mrs. Skaggs preceded him in death on October 21, 1943, and a daughter, (Kathleen) Mrs. Otis Beard, passed away in February 1926.
The surviving children are: Martin Skaggs, of Three Rivers; Herman Skaggs of Flat River; Sterling Skaggs of Mine La Motte; (Tessie) Mrs. Charles Lange of St. Francois; (Ruth) Mrs. Paul Stevens of Flat River; and (Elsie) Mrs. Edgar Lewis of Esther. He also leaves sixteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Sparks Funeral Chapel, Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. William Walter, pastor of the First Christian Church. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery.
