Surnames: MENTEER, GOFF, MATTHEWS, STEVENSON, ESTES
MENTEER, GOFF, MATTHEWS, STEVENSON, ESTES

I am working on a huge STEVENSON family tree. Quite a few of the descendants of the family lived in Madison County, Missouri. One of the descendants married into the MENTEER family of St. Francois County, Missouri.

The earliest mention I can find of the MENTEER's in Missori is the following two marriage records:

James MENTEER to Delilah ESTES, 19 Dec 1822 at St. Francois Co., Missouri

Joseph MENTEER to Elizabeth ESTES, 25 May 1823 at St. Francois Co., Missouri

In 1828 James MENTEER died, leaving a will, but unfortunately not naming his children. A Jacob MENTEER was one of the secretaries of the will. James, Joseph, and Jacob could all be brothers. By 1850 there were two MENTEER families listed in St. Francois Co. One was:

James MENTEER 25 b. MO Tanner
Lydia A. MENTEER 22 b. KY Keeping House
Robert MENTEER 27 b. MO Tanner
William MENTEER 23 b. MO Tanner
William GOFF 24 b. KY Physician

The other one was:

John MENTEER 16 b. MO
Delilah MENTEER 60 b. NC

The various MENTEER's could be related in a few different ways. Nothing is known of what happened to William MENTEER. William GOFF was a famous Physician of St. Francois Co. and later moved to Madison County, where he lived with his wife and family in 1880. John MENTEER married Mary SWEARINGEN on 08 Sep 1853 at St. Francois Co. I have no other record of him. James and Robert MENTEER are known to be brothers. The families of James and Robert are shown below.

James Madison MENTEER
b. 29 May 1825 at MO
m. 20 Mar 1850 at St. Francois Co., MO
d. 11 Mar 1874 at MO

Married: Lydia Ann GOFF
b. 16 Jun 1829 at KY
d. 28 May 1893 at Fredericktown, Madison Co., MO

Children:
Mary E_______ MENTEER b. Jan 1851 d. 1930
Josephine ______ MENTEER b. 1854 d.

James William MENTEER b. Aug 1859 d. 20 Mar 1868

Louisa _______ MENTEER b. 1865 d.
Mattie _______ MENTEER b. 1868 d.
Lilly May MENTEER b. 1868 d.
Martha ______ MENTEER b. 1872 d.

James was the son of James and Delila ESTES MENTEER. Lydia was the daughter of James Uriah and Cassandra DAVIS GOFF (20 Dec 1802 - 12 Dec 1891). It is known that Atimeser and Mattie died young. Louisa (perhaps called Lucrecia), Lilly May, and Martha may have also died young. The only marriage records found for Robert's siblings are: Mary E MENTEER to Beberly L MAZE (b. 1848 in MO) on 24 Dec 1869 at Madison Co., Missouri; Josephine MENTEER to William C. McKINNIS (b. 1852 in TN) on 23 Dec 1875 at Madison County, Missouri. Mary and Beverly had at least 10 children, seven still living in 1900 at Madison County, Missouri (along with both parents).

Robert D_______ MENTEER
b. 11 Oct 1824 at MO
m. 09 Apr 1856 at St. Francois Co., MO
d. 09 Jan 1887 at

Married: Martha Ann GOFF
b. 1838 at KY
d. 25 Jan 1926 at

Children:
William L______ MENTEER b. 1859 d.
Robert Lee MENTEER b. 01 Jul 1865 d. 24 Jan 1930
James ______ MENTEER b. Aug 1870 d. 1952
Carey ______ MENTEER b. 1875 d.
George W_______ MENTEER b. 31 Jan 1878 d. 24 Mar 1885

There may have been other children. These were the one listed on the 1870 and 1880 censuses from Madison County, Missouri. On 02 Nov 1887 Lee MENTEER married Emma B. McKENNEY at Madison County, Missouri. William L. was listed as Thomas on the 1880 census. In 1880 the widow Liddie MENTEER was living next door to her brother-in-law, Robert MENTEER.

So James and his brother Robert married GOFF sisters from Kentucky. William GOFF (17 Mar 1827 - 23 Jul 1897), brother of Lydia and Martha later became a famous early St. Francois physician in Bonne Terre, St. Francois County, Missouri. Family oral history has it that Robert Lee's father James died when Robert was about 11 and a "Scotsman" helped raise the children. James M. MENTEER was thought to have fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War and when he returned he found that his brother Robert had stolen all his business (hides and tanning). I will try to find the GOFF family in 1850 in Missouri or Kentucky. In 1870 a Cassandra GOFF (age 66, born in Kentucky) and a Maria A. GOFF (age 38, born in Kentucky) were living next to Robert MENTEER in Madison County, Missouri. It is assumed that they are the mother and sister of Mary and Lydia GOFF MENTEER. Lydia is buried at the Oddfellows (IOOF) Cemetery in Fredericktown, Madison County, Missouri. James was buried in an older cemetery that was later moved and his grave was lost.

The fifth of nine children of James Madison MENTEER (1825-1874) and Lydia Ann GOFF (1829-1893) was:

Robert Lee MENTEER
b. 08 Sep 1862 at Bonne Terre, St. Francois Co., MO
m. 29 Dec 1887 at Fredericktown, Madison Co., MO
d. 20 Aug 1945 at Fredericktown, Madison Co., MO

Married: Lenora Emily MATTHEWS (Emma)
b. 31 Jan 1865 at Fredericktown, Madison Co., MO
d. 27 Jun 1949 at Fredericktown, Madison Co., MO

Children:
Gilbert Otto MENTEER b. 14 Sep 1888 d. 29 Feb 1980
Robert Justin MENTEER b. 30 Apr 1891 d. Nov 1985
Ruby Jane MENTEER b. 12 Mar 1902 d. Apr 1980
Glennon Leo MENTEER b. 13 May 1908

Both Robert Lee and Emma are buried at the St. Michael's Church Cemetery, at Junction City, near Fredericktown, Madison County, Missouri. Robert Lee was killed when struck by the Iron Mountain Railroad train. Emma was the eldest of eight children of: Rebecca Anna STEVENSON (1841-1929) and Jeremiah MATTHEWS (1820-1889), a Mexican War Veteran.
