Was Tobacco grown in Stoddard Co. mid-1800's?

Does anyone know if tobacco was ever grown commercially in Stoddard Co? I'm interested in time around the Civil War. I read something in a family record that doesn't sound right. The man supposedly said that the Union soldiers burned his tobacco barns which were full of tobacco. I know there were some skirmishes around Stoddard Co. during the Civil War but this is the first I have heard about tobacco.
Thanks,
Helen
