1890 Linn County, Missouri Veterans census
Dillman, Libbus" Pvt. E 3rd Missouri Cavalry

I found two items on LT. One showed a Libbist Dilliner/Dillirner in Co D of
the 4th MO Vol. Cavalry from Jun-Aug 31, 1865. It was consistently spelled
that way in several muster records but they were for pay purposes and did
not show in other personal information.

Then I found in Co E of the 3rd MO Vol. Cavalry "Sebbins Dilliner". The
muster rolls did show his name as Libbius Dilliner since I knew what it was,
but no personal information. He enlisted 23 Dec 1861 at Palmyra, MO. I think
the cavalry units were small enough that enlistees had to travel to find
one, but that is a guess. It also stated he deserted Aug 10, 1862 at
Houston, MO. He returned and was sentenced to confinement. I have not found
any descriptive rolls which are supposed to provide more detail. This last
paragraph was in film ML179 3rd Mo Cavalry Volunteers.

I just started to enter the LT military info when I noticed that Emma Lois
was born 8 Mar 1864 in IA. Do you think it was possible that LT was in
southern IA and travelled to Palymra in MO to enlist? It is not that far
from Keokuk. This has to be the correct person since LT reported in 1890 he
was in a cavalry unit and I found the record.

Notes for CHARLES DILLINER:
Dear Lisa,
My connection to the Dilliners is through Charles' sister Emma who married James William SMITH. I found a little on the Dilliners in tracking my Smiths, but I did not record much on her siblings etc. I have cc'd Laura Elliott (hope her address is still good) who sent me info in 2001 on Albert DILLINER. Maybe Laura can help.

Emma's obit in 1932 said her brother Charley was living in Pollock, Sullivan Co, MO.

I did a search of the 1920 census and it shows Leroy G. DILLINER, b 1890 MO, as a patient in the US Army hospital in Deerfield, Lake Co, IL. Looks like he must have been injured in WWI. You might check the WWI Draft records for Sullivan or Linn co, MO for Leroy. I have found them to be very informative.

Neil,
Hello! I am working on my husband's Dilliner line, and I noticed you had information on Charles Dilliner. It was very refreshing to see that you sited your sources of information! So much gets put on-line without any verification. We're trying to find out information on Leroy G. Dilliner, the son of Charles Dilliner. All we know is that he was born in Missouri. Several different sources give a variety of counties, which has made it extremely difficult. Do you happen to have any records that show a Leroy G. Dilliner as Charles' son? We only can find that on the 1920 CA. census.

Dear Laura,
The death location in AZ is correct according to his obit. He was living with a son at the time, and was returned and buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. I probably had him dying in MO until I found the obit. See his page at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&...

By the way, I found his son, Charles Oliver, who died in Los Angeles. Try finding Charles Smith sometime! I knew he lived in LA toward the end of his life span and found a Charles Smith from MO in the SSDI and then found a Mary Smith with an almost identical zipcode. Turns out he married Mary Ellen Norvell from Humphreys, my dad's aunt from his grandmother's side. After I put the data on my website, I was contacted by a granddaughter of C. O. She is about my age and before her father was killed in a car crash in KS, he may have "dated" my grandmother Smith. I have not pursued that very much.

He was born 23 Jun 1891 in Paris, Edgar, IL, and died 29 May 1930 in Prescot, Yavapai, AZ.

Notes for MARY DELILAH SMITH: BIOGRAPHY: Mary Delilah Smith, known as Delilah, went to Boon Hill School in 1904. Her teach er was Laura Calvert.

BIOGRAPHY: She and her first husband, Harry Lawrence Newman (Harry), moved to Arizona in 1926 . Her husband, a World War I veteran, had lung problems (TB) that were "helped more by the c limate in Flagstaff than anywhere else. We lived in a tent all the way out, and even after w e got to Arizona".

BIOGRAPHY: They had four children.

BIOGRAPHY: She later went on to marry, Robert Wright.
From an article in the Prescott Weekly, December 13, 1979, Delilah tells about a time when sh e was younger, "I was a passenger in one of those old Fords, the kind with high buggy wheels. When the car rolled and I went through the windshield, they took me to a farmhouse and called the doctor. He gave me ether and sewed up my leg right there, by the light of a coal oil lamp. The doctor said then that 'either this leg will heal fine, or it'll rot out.' Well , he was right, but when it got infected, another old country doctor swore I had the mumps . My jaw was locked for nine days, the doctor said later that the illness was slow in developing, or I'd never have lived. I couldn't talk, and could just drink through a straw. Worst of all, nobody had warned me not to stick my tongue out if my jaws relaxed. When I did, my eyetooth went through the corner of my tongue. My sister had to pry my jaws open with the handle of a toothbrush." An anti-toxin arrived by special train, and only later was Mrs. Wright told that "a shot too much of it would have meant I could lose use of my muscles or go blind. Meanwhile I was having spasms, and they rubbed the back of my neck with hot alcohol, to try to make it relax."
