I am relatively new to genealogical research but am having some difficulties with a request for grandfather's birth certificate. The request is less than straightforward because of the circumstances.
Grandfather was born out of wedlock and given mother's maiden name at time of birth which I knew and put in the request. The correct date of birth and mother were also in the vital records request.
Unfortunately the person at the vital records bureau in Missouri, as polite as can be, with the certificate in front of her told me that I could not get the document unless I could provide the given name that matched the certificate and neither of those I knew him as or any other of my family knew him as were listed on the certificate. I tried a couple of guesses based on the surmised father's name without success.
There is very likely no one or no records that know what given name he had at birth, although we are activating family members across the country in that attempt.
So, finally, my question is: Is there any way around this requirement that I must have the given name on the certificate to get access?
Thanks so much.
