Hey,

My name is Chad Smith. I love Family History and have enjoyed Ancestry.com and many ways. I really have had no problems filling in the blanks when it comes to my Family Tree except when it comes to my Surname...which is very important to me.

This post is going to be long but I fill like I need to fill y'all in with every detail because I believe it to be important.

I'm looking for information on my Great Great Grandfather. I have found him listed as S.J. Smith and Stephen Smith.

I started out knowing my Grandfather (John Ray Smith) and I had just a little bit of information on my Great Grandfather (John Henry Smith) but that was it.

I was able to find the 1930 Census and his was the information that it gave me.

1. John H Smith was 56 years old.

2. He was born in Tennessee (Around 1871)

3. His Father was born in Missouri

4. His Mother was born in Tennessee

5. His wife was Maggie S Smith (He Maiden name was Stutz)

6. They lived in Houston, Texas

7. He was a Painter
...............................

1940 Census:

1. He is listed at 69 years old.

2. He is married to Margaret Smith. This is Maggie.

3. They lived in Houston, Texas.
.................................

It's hard when you have a common name to track down your Ancestors and you really can't get more of a common name then John Henry Smith.

After several months of hitting one road block after another I decided to write on the Message Board and seek help. I had somebody refer me to FamilySearch.org and there was a death certificate for John Henry Smith and it had several things that stood out to me.

1. John Henry was born in Tracy, Tennessee

I believe that this is Tracy City, Tenneessee

2. He died in Houston, Texas

3. The Informant was Maggie Smith.

4. Father: S.J. Smith

5. Mother: Maggie Bradshaw
.............................

The information seemed about right. But, I had a problem. When it comes to John Henry parents...the states that they were born in were listed as "Unknown". I had to make sure that S.J. was born in Missouri and Maggie was born in Tennessee.

I went on a search.

I found the 1880 Census for by using the words John Henry Smith and S.J. Smith.

I found this:

1. Stephen J Smith

2. Birthplace: Missouri

3. They were living in Grundy County, Tenneessee. This is the same place as Tracy City, Tennessee.

4. Father Birthplace: Missiour

5. Mother Birthplace: Tennessee
..............................

6. John Henry was listed at 9 years old. That is in line with his 1871 birthday.

7. Stepehen J Smith was married to Margaret Smith. That's correct.

8. Margaret Smith was born in Tennessee. That's correct.
.......................

I found the 1900 Census for Birmingham, Alabama.

1. Stephen J Smith--listed as "Head of Household"

2. Stephen J Smith--birth place is listed at Missouri

Now, that is in line with my information

3. Stephen J Smith is listed as a Widower.
..............................

John Henry Smith--is listed at 29 years old.

It has January 1871 as his birth.

His birth place is listed at Tennessee.
..............................

Every single item that was listed...is linked with my Great Grandfather and my Great Great Grandfather.
.................................

Now, I'm trying to find information on S.J. Smith. I know his Father was born in Missouri and his Mother was born in Tennessee. Other then that...I have no other information on his parents.

I also know that he was born March 1851

Any help would be very much appreciate!

Thank You,
Chad
