Hill and Hovis familes from Missouri to Beaverhead CO. MT

About 1885 Emerson Hill and his wife Margaret (Bess) Hill and Wm. Melichi Hovis and his wife Rose Anne (Bess) Hovis left Madison Co. Missouri for Montana.

Rose Anne and Margaret (Bess) were the sisters to my g-g-grandmother Melaney "Lane" (Bess) Hovis. I would like to find desendants of these ladies.

Emerson Hill owned a "General Merghandise" store in Red Rock, MT. Where is this town now? Is it a ghost town? What County was it in?

The Wm. Melichi Hovis family must have moved to or near Dillon MT. These ladies would send my g-g-grandmother pictures in the mail. The portraits were taken at "H.D. Weenink" photo studio, Dillon MT.

Emerson Hill and Margaret had a daughter named Maude.

Rose Anne and Wm. Melichi Hovis had a dauhgter named Alice, who may have married a Marcum about 1897, and had a daughter named Ruth Gwendolene Marcum born July 21, 1898. (This info. is from a old photo sent to my g-g-grandmother).

Is there any 1900 census records for Beaverhead Co. on line?

Please, folks I would like some help on this,

David N. Bollinger
Wayne Co. MO.

Baby Bessie M. is my grandmother and was born 1879 in New Brunswick. I believe I may have seen land grants for George and James. Family oral history said that David died in 1882. David's wife later married someone named BOTHWELL.

I'm also interested in the town of Glendale. Is the town still in existence? Why did people settle there?

Diane

Anna Cameron was my GGrandmother. She was born in Sheridan, Montana on Oct 28, 1868. Her fathers name was John Cameron and her mothers name was Anna (According to her Death Certificate). I wrote to Mr. Bridges, in Madison County and he tells me they never lived there. I got another lead from the 1880 Census that tells me that John Cameron and his wife, Anna and their daughter Anna, lived in the town of Glendale, in Beaverhead County. I am hoping that somebody out there can maybe give me some information that will steer me in the right direction to research these ancestors.

I thanks you, in advance and certainly appreciate any help.

Bill

Looking for information on Mr. Weenink. He may possibly have been a photographer by profession, but don't know for certain. I have some family photos that was taken by a photographer named Weenink in probably Wisconsin. However, one of the woman that we have photographs of mentioned in her diary that after she left Arlington, Oregon on a trip right in about 1902 she was headed to Dillon, Montana. I find it very interesting that many years prior she had had pictures taken by a Weenink, then planned to stop in Dillon on her return east, when to the best of my knowledge there was no family residining there. I have never come across the name Weenink in my genealogy work, however, there might be a connection through his wife, whom I do not know who she was. Any information on the Weenink family would be appreciated.

Hi - I'm hoping someone stateside may be able to help me with this as I am in the UK & don't know where to start with US records.
I am searching info on the death of an Alfred Richard DOUTHWAITE, born 1855 Islington, London, England. According to our family bible, it says, mysteriously, 'he died in Chicago 17 April 1883 in the times of Al Capone'. But I have had no way of proving that - it could just be family folklore!! He would have been 28.

I found him on the 1880 census in Glendale, Beaverhead, Montana, working as a printer. He appeared to be residing with a Leigh R Freeman who I believe was the editor on the paper for which my relative worked. Would anybody please be able to point me in the direction for further research, as I'm longing to find out what happened to him and about his live in Beaverhead.. Would there be anywhere I could find a death certificate or info and is there anywhere I might find an inquest or newspaper report about his demise?
Any info at all would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

I had found their marriage license, but I cannot find a record of Henry H before 1870 (he was 21 on a census and living with the George Yearian. I would guess he is also buried in Beaverhead, MT but I have no proof.

Hi,

I just posted an old newspaper article reporting the names of visitors to Helena, Montana.

Surnames mentioned include the following: FAY, LATHROP, ELIEL, WARNER, KANOUSE, VAUGHN, GREDELL, McKINE, and HODSON.

Among these, Lambert ELIEL, a merchant, hailed from Dillon in Townsend Co.; the remaining visitors were from elsewhere in MT or from other states.

This was scanned from an original issue (NOT microfilm!) of the The Helena Daily Herald newspaper (Lewis & Clark County, MT) dated April 24, 1888, and you can see it online here:

http://theoldentimes.com/personal04241888helenamt_1.html

I hope it's helpful!

Barbara
http://theoldentimes.com/old_news_mt.html
http://theoldentimes.com

Hi - My great-great-grandfather was "B.B." BURCHETT (Burr Benjamin Burchett). He brought his wife & 10 children from Iowa to Bannack, arriving in the Fall of 1862. In December 1862 his wife delivered another son, supposedly the first "white" child to be born in what became the Montana Territory. His "15 minutes of fame" was when he was elected Judge of the Miners Court in May 1863, at the same meeting where Henry Plummer was elected Sheriff. They stayed in Montana until about 1867. He and his grown sons (including Mahlon Wilson Burchett, my great-grandfather) ran or worked with a freight line in the area. He may also have staked a mining claim; family legend says he had something to do with developing Helena. I have found a few minor references to B.B. Burchett in materials on the Internet, mainly at the "vigilante" site. Does anyone know of anything you can share about B.B. Burchett or his family? Or of any likely sources, published or otherwise? If anyone happens to know the circumstances of their arrival (which wagon train, which route, or with whom???) that also would be appreciated. Anything you might tell me would be gratefully received.

I have a family tree that lists my ancestor's sister: Fanny Keister ((11/3/1856-1886?) married to a William Callen. They had the following children:

Marrcy (10/12/1870)married William Brown with child Sara Brown.

Fanny (9/3/1871)married James Ellis with child: Roman Ellis.

Sally (2/1/1873) married William Harris.

James (8/11/1875)

Laura (7/21/1878)married William Cecil with children: Mabel and Raymond.

Nora (6/27/1884) Rufus (7/31/1883)

and Lulu (7/11/1885)married Wilbert Harvie on 5/11/1902.

Can anyone verify this information? I saw a reference to a land patent in Beaverhead County for James Callen (2/6/1911)wondered if it was the same Callen family.

any information would be helpful.

Thank you

Dawn (California)

I am desperately searching for bios, family histories, journals, regarding the McGee and Poulson families.

Solomon Everett McGee born in Massachuetts approx. 6 Sept 1845, came from Iowa to Montana in 1887 til his death in 1910. He was a rancher. His wife is Delia (maiden name is O'Herron/O'Harron/O'Hern. She was born in London England.

What I need on this family really is what ship she came in on or what port she arrived at or departed from.

Solomon Everett McGee's family is from Ireland both his father (Solomon) and mother (Fannie Kelburn). I have no information regarding them or when they arrived in America.

Also I am looking for a missing child for this couple.

Am still looking for Wm. D. or Wm. B. Barks born 1877 in Indiana or Nodaway Co. Mo. As a boy, he removed from Mo. to Colby Kansas until the 1888/1890's whereas his father, Reason Barks, returned to Mo. and remarried. Wm. then removed to Burt Co. Nebraska, where his name appears on his brothers marriage cert. as witness in 1900. His father died Okla. 1910 and he is listed in estate papers as residing in Nebraska. Then, when his sister died in 1924,in Oklahoma, his address appears as Dillion, Mt. The estate was settled in 1928 and an address change is not listed for the receipt of his share. His name is never mentioned after the 1924 date...I don't know if he was married, had kids, or what. He doesn't appear on any census after 1880. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INFO ON THIS WANDERER? Thanks.

I am trying to find out how I can get a copy of the obit listed for Richard Holland who died in 1881. He is listed in Dillon Tribune Index of obits. It says on xerox page 4. How can I get a copy of the page? I have followed his family from Goderich/Morris twp, Huron Co. Ontario Can to Portage in Houghton co, MI then to Beaverhead and Sliver Bow where a number of his daughters lived with their husbands. I would like to find out where in Ireland he was born. I believe he is the son of George Holland from County Kerry (Kenmare) Ireland who is my ggg grandfather from a second wife. I have a marriage listing in Huron Co. that says Richard's father is George so that fits, I just wanted to know if the obit said any more about his family or where he was born. Thank you for any help. I would be happy to share info with anyone in Montana researching his family.

In 1900, Martin R. Quigley is listed in the Federal Census, County of Beaverhead, Fox Precinct. He lists his age as 33 years old, born in Ireland. Martin left the Fulton, Kansas area sometime prior to 1900 and ventured to Montana, where he eventually lived his life.

In the 1910 Federal Census, he is listed in the County of Beaverhead, Jackson Township, married to Marguerite, age 37 years old, born in Kansas; and they have two children, Ralph, age 8 years and Catherine, age 5 years. Both children are listed as being born in Montana.

In the 1920 Federal Census, Martin is listed in Beaverhead County, Jackson Township, age 58 years, along with his wife Margaret, age 46 years and a daughter Josephine, age 15 years. I believe Josephine and Catherine are probably one in the same. In 1920 Federal Census, Ralph Quigley is listed in Beaverhead County, Wisdom Township (son of Martin and Margaret).

Martin's parents were Patrick and Bridget (also used the name of Mary) Quigley, who imigrated from Ireland in 1869. They settled in Fulton, Bourbon County, Kansas sometime around 1870. Patrick died sometime between the 1875 State Census and the 1880 Federal Census, as Bridget is shown in the 1880 census as a widow, along with Martin, her son.

In 1907 there is a land grant for Martin R. Quigley, of 160 acres. In 1926 there is another land grant for Martin R. Quigley for 320 acres. Maggie Quigley is issued a land grant in 1913 for 320 acres.

Sometime after 1926, Martin Quigley succumbs and his wife takes over the land acquisitions. I know that Ralph Quigley marries. Ralph Quigley was born January 17, 1902 in Montana and died December 14, 1987, in Dillon, Beaverhead, Montana.

Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. I know that Martin was a livestock farmer.

Thank you. Sharron

When the aged Chinese failed to appear Sunday, neighbors called Nelson, who found him dead in his bed.

Known to everybody, "Whiskey Jim" was seen daily on the streets of Dillon up until the day of his death. When he first came to Dillon, some 25 years ago, Jim Lee was a prosperous, well-dressed Chinaman bent on the important mission of sending the bodies of six departed Chinamen back to the old country.

When his task was finished, Jim decided to stay in the Dillon Chinese settlement, which at that time was composed largely of Chinese, who had drifted away from Virginia City after the gold rush days. And in the succeeding years, he saw his countrymen drop by the wayside until he became the lone resident of Dillon's Chinatown.

Old-timers declare his nickname, "Whiskey Jim" was earned as the result of his continual visits to the wholesale liquor warehouse where he insisted on sampling the various whiskey barrels before he bought. Clerks began calling him "Whiskey Jim" because of sampling methods and the name stuck.

NOTE: This death notice is provided as a courtesy only; I am not related to, nor do I have knowledge of, this individual's family.

Hello, I have been searching for a Bruce Denny who was/is married to a Sharon Denny. Bruce owned a tavern/bar in Dillon MT. in the early to mid 1970's. I am not sure of the name of the tavern. It might have been " the Ace of Hearts" or something similar. If anyone has any information on how I can contact Bruce, or Sharon, please let me know! This search, and finding, Bruce is very important and all help is greatly appreciated.
Thank You!

Candice Milner
Yakima WA
hellfish43@hotmail.com

p.s. please don't be fooled by my crazy e-mail address, it helps deter genuine wierdos....besides it's from a Simpson's episode!
