Survivor of the Battle of the Little Big Horn

Although most posts are old that I've seen, I'm looking for information regarding the true name of the survivor under General Custer's command that survived the Battle of the Little Big Horn. I was told that it was my Great Grandfather (Samuel Thomas, I believe). Started writing a book several years ago and got stuck. Then I found a movie that talked about Samuel Thomas and his 7 year old son (which would have been my Great Uncle Willie). Supposedly, they were found next to their journal 10 years before the Battle and they were dead. If that was the case, I wouldn't be writing this. My Uncle told me that the question about who survived was on a game show and that he knew the answer since it was my Great Grandfather. Apparently, he was an Indian Scout that scouted ahead and when he got back with Reno and his troups, Custer and the rest of the troops were dead. Any info would be greatly appreciated, since the last member of the Thomas (my Uncle James) died on June 13, 2009. I would love to pay a tribute to him since he's the one that educated me. Thanks for any information.
