Sorry I didn't discover your message until just now. Yes, I might have Duncan relatives in Big Horn County around 1897. My grandmother's maiden name was Duncan and she married my grandfather (Gordon) around 1920. He had a ranch in the Wyola area and had some connection with the Crow tribe.

Re: Survivor of the Battle of the Little Big Horn

I found a list of those in "folklore" purported to be survivors of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. None of them are named Samuel Thomas. Here is a site you may be interested in seeing:

http://littlebighorn.wetpaint.com/page/Survivors+in+Bighorn+...

In doing an internet search, it appears that an Indian named Curley, a scout for Custer, is the only generally accepted survivor.

There appear to be a lot of questions about survivors. Apparently, from what I gleaned at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Little_Bighorn) but didn't quite understand, only 5 of the 7 companies of the 7th Cavalry were under Custer's command, and there were survivors in the other two companies. What I didn't understand was, what was the deal with the other two companies? Did they come in late in some other battle? Were they not there at all? Maybe somewhere else that would be explained better. Maybe your ancestor was in one of those two companies. Keep looking!

Survivor of the Battle of the Little Big Horn

Although most posts are old that I've seen, I'm looking for information regarding the true name of the survivor under General Custer's command that survived the Battle of the Little Big Horn. I was told that it was my Great Grandfather (Samuel Thomas, I believe). Started writing a book several years ago and got stuck. Then I found a movie that talked about Samuel Thomas and his 7 year old son (which would have been my Great Uncle Willie). Supposedly, they were found next to their journal 10 years before the Battle and they were dead. If that was the case, I wouldn't be writing this. My Uncle told me that the question about who survived was on a game show and that he knew the answer since it was my Great Grandfather. Apparently, he was an Indian Scout that scouted ahead and when he got back with Reno and his troups, Custer and the rest of the troops were dead. Any info would be greatly appreciated, since the last member of the Thomas (my Uncle James) died on June 13, 2009. I would love to pay a tribute to him since he's the one that educated me. Thanks for any information.

I made a mistake--a simple typo! Good thing I kept my notes (I write down what I see on the actual image of the enumerator's report).

Lillie was born in May 1886, 14 years of age; and Lena was born Oct 1888, 11 years of age. I found Lena in another census, where it appears that she was born in 1890 given her stated age, but I think that is wrong and is either an error on the part of the enumerator, or Lena was trying to shave a couple of years of of her age ;-) Anyway, I have found the birthdates given on the 1900 census to be quite accurate.

According to the 1910 U.S. Federal Census Index, Burl A. Scott was residing on the Crow Indian Reservation, Yellowstone County, Montana.

1920 U.S. Federal Census; Montana; Big Horn County; Crow Indian Reservation; Hardin; School District #: 17; Roll #: T625_967; Page; 5B; Enumeration District: 5; Image: 0274.

SCOTT, Burl A.; head of household; male; white; 39 years of age; married; born in Missouri; both parents born in U.S.; occupation: farmer--home farm.
SCOTT, Ida D.; wife; female; white; 42 years of age; married; born in Mississippi; father born in Virginia; mother born in Mississippi; occupation: cook--Crow Indian School.
SCOTT, Julia A.; daughter; female; white; 8 years of age; single; born in Montana; father born in Missouri; mother born in U.S.; occupation: none listed.
-----------------------
1930 U.S. Federal Census; Montana; Big Horn County; Crow Indian Reservation; Roll #: 1252; Enumeration District: 7; Image: 226.0; Enumerated on 23 Apr 1930:

SCOTT, Ida D.; head of household; female; white; 53 years of age; married; first married at 39 years of age; born in Mississippi; father born in Virginia; mother born in Mississippi; occupation: cook--U.S. Indian Service.
--------------------------
It appears that Ida quite likely was a widow by 1930. I am unable to find either Burl or Ida in the Montana Death Indexes. Why live on the reservation you ask? It appears that Burl either owned, or more likely leased, farm land on the reservation--probably good dryland wheat farming at that. My census images do not indicate his occupation as "laborer," but as a farmer.

An obituary was probably published in the "Livingston Enterprise" newspaper, and perhaps you should contact the Park County Public Library to see if they would be willing to provide you with a copy of the obit:

Livingston Park County
Public Library
Livingston, Montana 59047
406.222.0862
lpcpublib@ycsi.net

You can check his burial record at the following site--just click on surnames beginning with "D."

http://www.mrail.net/data/cemete/mont/bighorn/custer/

Good luck!

I am not related to, nor do I have any personal information regarding the Darby family--I just enjoy doing voluntary look-ups for people who post on these query boards.

One thing that I forgot to mention, was that Marvin E. Darby was not a veteran of World War II, but of the Phillipine Insurrection, which occured between 1899-1902. He would have been a young man of about 18-20 years then.

You can search this Montana Death Index as compiled by the Montana Genealogical Society by decades:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~mtmsgs/death_records.htm

By the way, the community would be St. Xavier, not Xavier. Good luck!
