You might contact the Overholser Research Center in Fort Benton. They are a repository of a great many historical records, clippings, old registers, etc. Ken Robison is the Historian, and the library is staffed by volunteers, who are very helpful. This is the url: http://www.fortbenton.com/museums/library.html

Is it possible your Clark's settled in the town of Chouteau rather than the county? I checked what info I have on the Highwood area, but only found another Clarke family.

Needle in a haystack is right! Thank you for your help. The wedding date is wonderful & tells me my leads & hunches were heading in the right direction. Sometimes, I think, we just aren't meant to know or find all the details, and this may be the one for my husband's side. But, I'll keep plugging along.
In the Indiana Marriage Collection 1800 to 1941 - there is listed Francis A. Mosley md to Johnson A. Miller - they md. 4 July 1886 in Scott Co., Indiana.

Don't know if this is your family or not. Early Montana death records are very spotty. Good luck. Didn't find
any John or Johnson Miller in the Montana Death Index. But a lot of early Montana deaths were just small items in the newspapers. Havre, Fort Benton, or Great Falls all might have mention of your Mr. Miller's death - but name and date time are going to make it like search for the needle in the hay stack. Best of luck to you.

From the Montana Death Index
Herman May - age 68 - b. abt 1870 - died 3 Oct 1938 with index # GF 7064. That indicated he died in Great Falls, Cascade Co., Montana. Many people from Chouteau Co. went to Great Falls because of the hospital in Great Falls.

Rosa May - age 87 - b. abt 1885 - died 12 Feb 1972, died in Chouteau Co., Mont. - residence also Chouteau Co., Mont., widowed. Index # 671.

Herman May died 1938 - there may be an obit in the Fort Benton River Press (Chouteau Co.) or look in the Great Falls Tribune (Great Falls, Cascade Co., Mont.).
You can probably get the newspapers (on microfilm) thru interlibrary loan. The State Library in Helena, Montana has an excellant collection of Montana newspapers.
HELP! I've hit a brick wall--my husband's gr grandmother, Francis MOSLEY b. 6 Feb 1867 in IN married ? MILLER also b. in IN @ 1880, so the family story goes. They relocated to Havre, Chouteau Co, MT by 1886 when their first child was born. Elmer MILLER was b. Jun 1886, then Nellie MILLER b Mar 1889 and Lillian (my husband's grandmother) b. 20 Nov 1892 d. 21 Mar 1984 in OR. All the children were born in Havre, Chouteau Co, MT. Mr MILLER supposedly died while Lillian just a baby; and Francis remarried to Isaac Newton ABBOTT in Havre, MT & had 3 children with him. Any help with the MILLER/MOSLEY line would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Gayle

I'm looking for Nancy Thomas Keister who probably died between the 1880 census and 1900. She's the mother of Edward Keister/Keaster and moved to Upper Highwood on Shonkin Creek in about 1876. Listed in the 1880 census. I know that Edward married in 1883. But can not find where Nancy is buried. Edward is in the Upper Highwood Cemetery but where is Nancy? Geraldine? Fort Benton? alittle help?

I'll be in Montana in July 2008 and can look where anyone points me. Thanks!

Go back to the queries for the state of Montana (unknown) and look for my same question a few months ago. Go to the responses from Karen Stevens from Billings. This great lady looked mine up and sent me the copys of my brands. I'm sure if you contact her, she will do the same for you. She was a great help.

Info on Alfred Cecil D. HENMAN m. Mary Reese HADLOCK

I am looking for any information on my great-grandparents.

Alfred Cecil D. Henman married Mary Reese Hadlock on Jan 7, 1911 in Big Sandy, MT. He immigrated from England, I am not sure when. She was born in WI but her family is from NY area. I don't know what took them to Montana.

They are on the 1920, Stillwater Co., Lower Grove Creek, MT and
the 1930 Galatin, Bozeman, MT censuses.

I think they are buried in Dodgeville, WI with other family members.

I've found that she had a Homestead/Land Patent? for 160 acres, in Mar 3, 1917. And so did her mother and brother, Mary Hadlock and Frank Hadlock.

How do I find when the land was sold? At the time it was purchased her mother and brother were on the Cook Co., Evanston, IL Census. So I am confused about how the land purchases worked. They obtained land, but I don't think they ever lived in Montana. What happened to the land?

I am told my great-grandfather was some sort of Ranger, maybe a park ranger in Yellowstone. My grandmother was born in Bozeman. We have pictures of my great-grandfather with Indians in Yellowstone we assume, and some leather beaded satchels that we were told were gifts to him from the Indians.

And help in where to look would be great.

Sandy Davis

I am seeking information on the Eugene P. Dasheill family of Clear Lake, Montana. Eugene died 3 April 1933 according to the Montana Death Index on Ancestry.com. His wife, was Jennie Martin, daughter of Samuel D. and Daisy Martin. Samuel was my husband's great-uncle. Anyway, I am not sure if any of the Martins in the area were related, but I would like to find out. I think Jennie remarried after Eugene died. They had a daughter, Merle, according to the census. I have not been able to locate any cemetery information etc. online and would appreciate hearing from someone.

Thanks,
Juvanne Martin
Nampa, Idaho

Great Falls, Montana
Great Falls Tribune newspaper
Monday, 15 Sept. 1924

City Council Orders Two Buildings Torn Down at Fort Benton

Special to The Tribune
Fort Benton, Sept. 14 –
At the recent meeting of the Fort Benton city council a contract for the tearing down of two old buildings was let to Henry Hagen of this city. One of the buildings is the old log structure on Front street, formerly occupied by the Smith Tire shop and which was partially destoyed by fire a couple of years ago, and the other is the two-story brick building near the Methodist church.
The council also voted to buy a light chassis on which to mount the city’s chemical wagon. The buying of a truck will do away with the hitching of the chemical cart onto the first automobile that arrives when the fire alarm is sounded and will make the city’s fire fighting deparment much more efficient.
During the past, several serious fires have been stopped by the aid of the chemical wagon and it is very seldom that the fire department has to connect the hose and use water. This new addition will make several minutes difference in the arrival of the chemical cart at a fire.
Ashmoor is not a town. It was at one time a school district,
school district # 24 - being the Ashmoor school district and at one time the area also had a post office. Keep in mind that many Post offices were in rural farm family homes.
The Ashmoor school district was in the Knees community
area. Many of the old rural area schools no longer exist.

Finding Cemetery Transcriptions for Ft. Benton?

Can anyone tell me if there are Cemetery trancscriptions available for Ft. Benton, and where one might find them? I am trying to pin down the gravesites of William Thomas Morrow, d. 1938, Carrie May Morrow, d. 1941, and Arnum Jesse Knowlton, d. 1935. They were all life long residents of Ft. Benton.
I appreciate any help. Thanks!
