I read the thread with interest. My Great Grandmother, May McLeod, eventually Fox, moved to Dawson/Richland County in 1908. She came originally from Central City, Linn County, Iowa. I saw a few years ago a PBS show on a young women who did the same from Linn County. There must be a reason these young women left to Eastern Montana, probably same town. Would love to discuss this and see if we have a tie.

Chris Jensen

I have been all over the site and can't locate them, although I did find Cornelia and her son, Mason in the index of the "Our Times Our Lives" book.

The Vanderhoef family was large. I am especially interested in Walter Cornelius Vanderhoef, his wife Beatrice and their 9 sons: Alric E, Ernest A, Farrell D, Vernon R, Esmond H, Berlyle P, Lansemere W (he is my uncle an just passed this year in WY), Doren W and Aloyisa M. I have census reocrds for them, but nothing else. No marriage records or death records.

Can anyone help? Thank you,

Kari

The family story is that he was killed in a gun-fight in Glendive, but nothing is documented. I have a picture, taken in Helena, that I believe may be 'Jim' & his brother Charles. Would like to find family who could confirm.

Hi Brian
Thank you for answering so quickly. My friend's grandfather (believed to be either Wilhelm or Alfred) Schwittay was born in Ukraine in the area under East Prussia, so definitely from the same region. I'll do as you suggest and try to contact Margaret Fisher

Thank you :-)
Best wishes,
June :-)

Hi,
Edith Louise Schwittay married Charles Sparrenberger who was a distant branch of the Sparrenberger's that I sprung from. However, all I know is that Edith was born 13 Dec 1883 in East Prussia and moved to Pound, Wisconsin with her family when she was six. The woman who posted this info on Ancestry.com, is Margaret Fisher maitreya@bellatlantic.net however have not been able to contact her there. The title on Ancestry.com is Fishers of Haddonfield.
I sure wish you the best of luck in your hunt. Sorry I don't have any more info....Brian

Hi Brian
This is a very, very long shot but I have to try all angles. Re the name Schwittay: I am trying to research for a friend who is desperate to find out about her father's family. Her Grandfather was known as Schwittay / Schwittaj (spelling variation). The early family, during the 1800s were German and moved to the Ukraine. When WWII arrived, the family were forcibly taken from their home as ethnic Germans and the grandfather was 're-culturalised' into the German ways and sent to Holland to join a German Regiment. He could not speak German.

The International Red Cross has helped my friend a lot with this new information and she now wants to find more out about this side of her family. Her grandfather was eventually critically injured and was sent to a hospital in northern France (which was by then liberated). The grandmother, together with her two year old son (this child is my friend's father)returned from Holland to the part of Germany that unfortunately fell back into Russian hands. She and her tiny son were shipped off to Siberia for ten years.

It would be good if I could find out more about this family. Holland (and surrounding countries) often substituted the 'j' or 'ij' for 'y'. As the family were forcibly sent to Holland, the spelling of the name could have changed here. Also, the original spelling was often changed to suit Western European writing and speaking (phonetically). Do you have any more information about this side of your family please?

With very best wishes,
June :-)

It had been driven into the ground and left so as to be able to quickly locate when wanted.
The force of the jump drove the handle well into the man’s bowels. Mr. Swiss was taken immediately to the Deaconess hospital at Sidney, some 60 miles, and an operation performed. His condition is considered critical with but little hope held for his recovery.
Twilde born abt. 1879 and died August 16, 1942 in Dawson county, Mt. according to 1920 census stated he had citizenship in 1916 and I am assuming would have covered all the children for naturalaztion. So, I guess I would need to look for his papers instead. Thank you again for your help!

To obtain a copy of a Death Certificate for Rachel Walter, you might try contacting:

Dawson County Vital Records
Clerk & Recorder
207 West Bell street
Glendive, MT 59330-1616
PHONE: 406-377-3058

Most counties did not keep death records until about 1915 when this practice became mandatory by state law, and it didn't become routine for many counties until about 1920. I would give the Clerk & Recorder a phone call to see if they have such records. Below is a link to the MTGenWeb Counties which offers many research options:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~mtgenweb/countytbl.html

I have some in-depth information about Alexander & Rachel's son, Sidney, which I will send to you via your e-mail address.

MONTANA DEATH INDEX 1907-1953:

WALTER, Alexander
Died: 05 Jul 1919 at 73 years
Index #: Sdn 57

The Mon-Dak Heritage Center in Sidney keeps an extensive file on old obits of county residents--you might want to see if they have one for Walter, and maybe even Rachel:

http://www.midrivers.com/~wyldrose/RichlandResources.htm

Good luck!

1920 Census question

I believe that I have found a missing relative on the 1920 Dawson County, Montana census. (the family of Anton and Inger Peterson) Does anyone know where these people would have been living if the location on the census form is listed as School District 101?? Thanks
