looking for Brian Dippie, author, Custer's Last Stand: The Anatomy of an American Myth

I would like to talk with Brian about his comments in quotes below about my grand uncle, Fred Hans--

Custer's Last Stand: The Anatomy of an American Myth - Page 87 by Brian W. Dippie - History - 1994 - 214 pages
"... Captain Charles L. Von Berg and Fred M. Hans occupied worlds of their own, all-inclusive creations contained entirely within their minds. Though they filled these miniature globes to bursting, they were left to explain why their adventures made so little impress on the outside world, on history at large.

Custer's Last Stand: The Anatomy of an American Myth - Page 79 by Brian W. Dippie - History - 1994 - 214 pages
"---actually discovered the mutilated remains of the General, with the "long dark hair" still on his severed head. Besides modestly asserting that in his capacity as "official investigator of the Custer Massacre for the War Department" he rounded up the recalcitrant Sioux alnost single-handedly, "Lone Star" Fred M. Hans also purported to have found the bodies of the Seventh Cavalry troopers, while Captain Charles L. Von Berg, who carried dispatches to Custer from General Terry in one account, from General Crook in another, told how he discovered---"

If anyone is interested, I have Fred Hans diary during his scouting days in the 1870s.

Please reply directly to --
dadbrown_99@yahoo.com
A search of Heritage Quest PERSI (historical publications index, via my public library account) did not turn up anything for him in Montana, but did return several citations for his name from South Dakota (see below, with my apologies if using this board for the reply messes up the formatting). I am presuming that his name is mentioned in the ones that do not have his name in the title. You can request copies of the documents with the following form:

Periodical Source Index (PERSI) Order Form

Name:__________________________________________________________
Address:________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
To obtain copies of articles in the PERSI index, contact the Allen County Public Library Foundation, P.O.Box 2270, Fort Wayne, IN 46801-2270. Send this form describing the articles to be copied, provide the full entry from PERSI and the name of the journal. Request only six articles at a time. The charge is $7.50 for each letter, pre-paid, plus $0.20 per page copied to be billed to you. Requests not acceptable by phone, fax, or e-mail. Please allow 6-8 weeks.
Title of article:__________________________________________________
Title of journal:_________________________________________________
Code: Vol: No: Mon: Yr:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.
Does anyone know if this magazine is still being published and where. Can i get an address or phone ? Does anyone have a collection or know where i can find archives of old issues ?

My grand uncle, Fred M. "Lone Star" HANS was a scout during the Sioux Indian wars of 1876 and 1877. He had quite a publicized reputation in Montana territory and I would like to know if he was mentioned in this magazine or others.

An on-line book review states--"MONTANA, the magazine of western history is published quarterly at Roberts and 6th Avenue, Helena,"

Thanks

Magdeline(Tuffli)Tayor"Peg"
She died at the age 106 earlier this year I believe in Helena.
She was one of several children of Hans Tuffli and Katy Joos.
Hans had been born in Switzerland and I think Katy was born in Wisconsin. Her sibling were Arthur, Andrew Theodore, Mary Dorothy, and maybe John and Ann as well.
My uncle Ted Tuffli was one of those brothers, he died in Saugus Ma in Oct of 1988.
I would like a full obitary typed up and e-mailed to me if that is possible, otherwise posting it here I guess would be okay.
She I gather was into art, pottery etc. Her sister at one point owned an antique shop in Helena as well.
Most if not all of her siblings are now deceased.
Thank you very much for any help with this. I think her husband's name had been Cyril? Thanks again
Barbara Nsambradley@aol.com

Charles J. Stevens
There are dozens of stories about the exploits of Charles Joseph Stevens, eldest son of Calvin and Margaret Spellman Stevens, in the "Helena Independent" newspaper of Helena, Montana between 1928 and 1940.

Here are summaries of some of his escapades:

About 1920 Charles robbed a bank, was tried and found guilty, was sentenced to 10 to 40 years but paroled after four. At the time of the robbery Charles was employed as a bank messenger. After he had collected $40,000 for the bank from the post office he was found tied up in the back of a cigar store. It was later determined he had hidden the money in an empty store and tied himself up.

In 1930 his home and chicken ranch burned under suspicious circumstances. His mother tried to collect the insurance on the place to keep it from going to Charles' creditors.

In 1931 Stevens and family member purchased a place called the Parchen Mansion and bought a lot of insurance on it. So after it burned to the ground and the site showed evidence of arson there was suspicion. Charles, afraid of arrest, faked his own suicide and departed leaving seven tenderly written suicide letters behind. Several months later he wrote a letter to the sheriff with a postmark of Wellsburg, Iowa. But this too, was thought to be a fake as several years earlier he had claimed he was going to England to collect his share of a large estate. Friends received letters from cities along the route telling of the sights. They were very impressed until Charles was discovered at a farm not far away. He had sent the letters enclosed in envelopes addressed to the postmasters of the various towns, with instructions to remail them.

In 1940 he was charged with assault with a deadly weapon. He entered the office of an acquaintance and tried to sell him 2 tombstones. When the man said he wasn't interested Charles said he'd lend the man the money to buy them. When that didn't work, Charles said he'd give the man the tombstones. When they were still refused Charles pulled a gun and forced the man to a backroom. An accomplice brought in a large number of boxes and packages. When Charles tried to force the victim to the basement, the victim made a dash for freedom, jumping through a glass door. The packages were found to include a vial labeled, “cyanide of potassium,” another vial containing porcupine quills, which was labeled “poisonous darts, do not touch, poisonous darts, deadly poison”; electric wiring, dynamite with caps with fuses attached, bottles of a liquid believed to be nitroglycerin, tape, a hair brush, a hunting knife, dies similar to those used by notaries in legalizing papers, and a sawed-off shotgun.

Besides letters and papers which appeared to be legal documents there were carelessly scribbled bizarre notes. One suggested that someone scare “him” with snakes; another, scare “him” by saying “he” would be dropped down a deep shaft; another, “put a bomb at the door and lock him in, where he can see the bomb all the time, and have the bomb wired to go off at any minute”; another,”put him in a sack and tie the top of the sack and throw him in the river.” The person meant by “him” was not known.

I'd love to correspond with anyone who knows more about this family.

hello,

My name is Yvone. You can find his notice on Oregon Death Index 1903-98

And you will also find information under Social Security death index.

He was my grandfather (father's side). If you like, you can see if you can get in and see what I have on him. I am no longer a paying client, so I can't go look at those records anymore :-(. But you may find it.

MONTANA DEATH INDEX, 1907-2002:

McCULLOH, Robert
Died: 03 Sep 1918 at 72 years of age
Index #: 55390

McCULLOH, Elizabeth
Died: 03 Aug 1945 at 87 years of age
Index #: GF 10157
---------------
From the "Helena Independent," published at Helena, Montana on October 17, 1883:

DEATH OF MRS. E.W. McCULLOH
News was received yesterday of the death of Mrs. E.W. McCulloh, mother of Robert L. McCulloh, at Tipton, MO., on the 14th instant [October 14, 1883]. The deceased was well and favorably known in Helena and Montana, having many friends here who will hear of her death with deep regret.
---------------
From "The Independent Record," published at Helena, Montana on Saturday, August 4, 1945:

AGED FALLS RESIDENT SUFFERS INJURIES WHEN STRUCK BY CAR
Great Falls, Aug. 4.--(AP)--Injuries suffered by Mrs. Elizabeth McCulloh, 87, when she was struck by an automobile here last night were believed serious, but not likely to be fatal, her attending physician declared early today.

Mrs. McCulloh, a pioneer Montana resident was believed to be suffering from a fractured back and other injuries. Police Lt. Clarke Grady said she evidently walked into the path of the car, driven by J.O. Johannsen.

From the same newspaper, on Sunday, August 5, 1945:

MRS. McCulloh, nor Charles A. Broadwater.

I hope you find the above information useful.
Obituary: BROADWATER, Mrs. C.A. (Julia C.) -- dies 31 Dec 1929 in Piedmont, CA

The following is a link to an extensive biography of Charles A. Broadwater that appeared in the book, "Progressive Men of Montana," ca. 1902:

http://forms.lib.umt.edu/gsdl/cgi-bin/library.exe?e=d-000-00...

From the same book, here is the biography of Robert L. McCulloh:

http://forms.lib.umt.edu/gsdl/cgi-bin/library.exe?e=d-000-00...
---------------
From "The Helena Daily Independent," published at Helena, Montana on Thursday, January 2, 1930; Page 10:

MRS. C.A. BROADWATER EXPIRES IN CALIFORNIA
Mrs. C.A. Broadwater, one of the best known pioneer women of Montana, widow of Colonel Broadwater who took an active part in the development of the state dating from territorial days, passed away Tuesday night about 11 o'clock at her home in Piedmont, Cal., Thomas A. Marlow, her nephew, was advised by a telegram received early yesterday morning. She had been a resident of Piedmont the last 26 years.

Mrs. Broadwater was one of three daughters of Judge William Chumasero, a prominent attorney of the state, who died at Redondo Beach, Cal., in 1891. One year ago, this month, Mrs. Mary C. Miller, sister of Mrs. Broadwater, passed away at Pasadena, where the surviving sister, Mrs. Claude G. Wilson of Helena, is now visiting.

Mrs. Broadwater is survived by one son, Charles C. Broadwater who lives in Piedmont. A daughter, Mrs. Antoinette Wilder Crommelin died several years ago.

No arrangements for the funeral have been announced, but it is expected the body will be brought here for interment at Forestvale cemetery, where Mrs. Broadwater's husband, sister, and daughter and parents are at rest.

Colonel Broadwater was prominently identified in the early days with transportation development. After establishing the Diamond R. Freight lines, he built the Montana Central railroad from Havre to Butte, having the contract from James J. Hill, late president of the Great Northern. He founded many Helena institutions, among them the Broadwater natatorium and hotel.
-----
Another article in the same edition of "The Helena Daily Independent":

COLONEL BROADWATER'S HELPER

Few men become really great; few men conceive and carry to completion constructive enterprises, plan vast buildings, throw railroads across principalities or even paint pictures which become famous without the help, the influence, the advice or at least the silence and soothing influence of a good woman. Minds of men who do things will not stand the strain without her care and her companionship.

The passing of Mrs. Charles A. Broadwater, widow of the late Colonel Broadwater, at her California home, brings again to mind the works of that great builder for Montana, and those who knew the Broadwaters and look back over the years when the Colonel was active in this territory just blossoming into statehood, must suspect that the wife who died yesterday was one of the sources of his great strength and a constant help and inspiration to him.

Women were the moving principle of the heroic times of the ancient world, and in all the great public events since those days, the influence of a woman's mind may be detected even where, under particular institutions, her presence was forbidden.

So it must have been with Colonel Broadwater. His undertakings were daring; they taxed the mind and wore the body of that giant figure in Montana's history, but stupid indeed would be the one who did not believe that Mrs. Broadwater had much to do with the successful culmination of the Colonel's enterprises. Her eyes and lips must have solved with a smile many of the problems which had cost the Colonel an arching brow with premature furrows.

Colonel Broadwater has been dead thirty-eight years, yet his name is as fresh in the minds of even the younger generation as though he had passed away only a few years ago. When he died The Independent said on May 25, 1892: "As the days go on we may learn to speak of him as he was: to retell the story of the sturdy pioneer; to dwell with pride on the achievements of the king of business; to tell how large a part he was of the city and the state that he loved so well; to talk calmly of the generour nature, the undaunted will, and the genial kindness of this prince among men."

All of this has come to pass. We know what Colonel Broadwater did for us, but look for a moment now in the hour of death for his beloved wife, and let us acknowledge as would the Colonel if he were here today, that she shared and helped him throughout the years they were together, and he must have said to her when their souls met on the golden strands, "Dear one, I bless the day when a little woman wrought her way into this life of mine."
---------------
The obituary of Mrs. Broadwater gives the names of a few descendants, but it would seem that they had relocated to California rather than staying in Montana. Perhaps you will need to search in that area as well.
---------------
WORLD WAR I DRAFT REGISTRATION CARD, 1918:

Name: Charles Chumasero Broadwater
Address: 172 Alvarado Rd., Berkeley, Alameda County, Calif.
Age: 42 years
Birthdate: November 17, 1875
White, native born
Occupation: Gold mining engineer
Employer: Merrill Metallurgical Company
Address: 121 2nd St., San Francisco, Calif.
Nearest Relative: Edna Ong Broadwater
Address: 172 Alarado Rd., Berkeley, Calif.
Physical Description: Tall, medium build, brown eyes, gray hair.
No apparent physical disabilities
/s/September 12, 1918
Berkeley, Calif.
---------------
1920 U.S. Federal Census; California; Alameda County; Oakland Township; Berkeley City; Enumerated on 14 Jan 1920:

Residing at: 172 Alvadaro Road

BROADWATER, Charles C.; head of household; male; white; 44 years old; married; born in Montana; father born in Missouri; mother born in Illinois; occupation: metallurgical engineer--laboratory.
BROADWATER, Edna O.; wife; female; white; 40 years old; married; born in Ohio; both parents born in Ohio; occupation: none listed.
BROADWATER, Elizabeth M.; daughter; female; white; 10 years old; born in California; father born in Montana; mother born in Ohio.
BROADWATER, A.
The database I subscribe to is incomplete for Helena and the dates between September 22 through 30, 1911. However, I did find the following article published the day before they were married:

"The Anaconda Standard," published at Anaconda, Montana; the Society Page (7), on September 24, 1911.

WILL MARRY IN HELENA
Mrs. Josephine Shea and Mr. M.J. Keefe left yesterday afternoon [from Butte] for Helena, where they will be united in marriage today at high noon. Afterward they will leave Helena for the coast where they will spend their honeymoon. On their return to this city, which will be in a few weeks, they will be at home on East Galena street.

The couple were accompanied to Helena by Miss Margaret Shea, caughter of the bride, and Mr. O'Brien.
----------
I hope you find the above article useful. I am not related.

Obit: KIBLER, Herbert, 65 -- Dies 01 Nov 1954 in Helena, Montana

NOTE: I subscribe to the Newspaper Archives database, and was able to find the obit for Mr. Kibler. Unfortunately, this collection of papers is not complete, and I was unable to obtain an obit for Mrs. Kibler.

From "The Independent Record," published at Helena, Montana on Monday, November 1, 1954:

HERBERT KIBLER, 65, WHO SERVED 25 YEARS AS STATE ADJUTANT OF AMERICAN LEGION, DIES HERE
Herbert Kobler, 65, prominent in Montana American Legion affairs since 1927, who retired in June after serving 25 years as adjutant of the Montana department of American Legion, died early this morning at the veterans' administration hospital at Fort Harrison, where he had been a patient since Sept. 13. He had been in failing health for several years.

Born May 2, 1889, in Crediton, Ont., Canada, he came to the United States in 1892. On May 2, 1917, he enlisted in World War I at Grand Forks, N.D. He was discharged July 9, 1919, at Camp Upton, N.Y., as a first lieutenant in the quartermaster corps.

Following the war, he went to Malta, where he worked in a bank and served as commander of Malta post No. 57, American Legion, in 1923-1924. He was married in Malta on Jan. 23, 1923, to the former Catherine Hartman.

During the time he was employed in a bank at Havre, he was elected commander of the Montana department of American Legion, serving in 1927-28, when he was also national executive committeeman.

The family moved to Helena in 1929, when Mr. Kibler was named adjutant of the Montana department of the American Legion. He served 25 years, until his retirement during the convention in Bozeman June 28 of this year.

Mr. Kibler was often called "Mr. American Legion of Montana." He had attended all national conventions until this year, had been in charge of American Legion junior baseball regional playoffs, served on a number of national committees and taken a great interest in all Legion activities.

In 1940, he was named chairman of the Lewis and Clark county selective service board.

While in Malta in 1923, he was cheminot (40 et 8) nationale of the 40 et 8 organization. He was also a member of Disabled American Veterans.

In addition to belonging to Helena BPOE lodge No. 193, Mr. Kibler was active in Masonic organizations. He was a member of Morning Star Lodge No. 5, Af & AM, Scottish Rite and Algeria Shrine. He was general chairman of the Shrine spring ceremonial in May, 1948.

The Rev. H.M. Waldron and members of Morning Star Lodge will officiated at funeral services at Retz chapel at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning. Interment will be in Cavalier, N.D.

Survivors include his widow, who resides at the family home, 527 North Raleigh, a step son, Michael Hartman of Crescent City, Calif., who is expected to arrive today; his mother, Mrs. Leah H. Kibler of Cavalier, N.D.; two sisters, Maude Kibler of Cavalier and Mrs. Della King of Minneapolis, and three brothers, Ed Kibler of Fargo, who is to arrive tonight, Ernest Kibler of Cavalier, and Fred Kibler of Rockton, Ill.

Retz funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
----------
From "The Independent Record," published at Helena, Monana on Thursday, November 4, 1954:

Few Montanans were better known, or more favorably known, than Herbert Kibler, who for a quarter of a century served as adjutant of the Montana department of the American Legion. His death at age 65 found hundreds of friends recalling the many constructive and enjoyable events they had attended, or had been called in as assistants to "Herb."

Herb Kibler had that desirable accomplishment of always apearing to be vitally interested in whatever he was doing. His enthusiasn spread quickly to his associates. With Herb in the lead, scores of projects suddenly took shape and were carried to successful conclusions. Be it junior baseball, or Legion membership campaign, he was in there pitching.

Ill health in recent years caused him to turn over some details to younger hands, but until very recently he insisted on doing something about affairs in which he was so well trained.

In Legion work he was known throughout the country, because of his service on various boards and committees. As was to be expected, he had a prominent role in the "40 et 8," the Legion fun making organization. He believed that a little humor at the right time could go a long way toward cementing friendships.

In the talk sessions that sometimes follow meetings, Herb could take his share of kidding about being one of those veterans from World War I, often called "the horse and buggy war," by soldiers of more recent engagements. But, Herb would say "Those German machine guns and shells could kill you just as dead as can your modern weapons, even if they were made in the teens of this century."

A great many Montanans will miss Herb Kibler. He has given all of us a lesson in how to go about one's daily chores. Montanans will long remember him.
----------
I hope you find the above obit and article useful.
I was unable to find the obits you are looking for in the Newspaper Archives database (the collection of papers is incomplete); however, I did find an article about a marriage which gives you Jeanne C. Whittier officiated at the double ring ceremony in the church, which was decorated with standards of laarge white chrysanthemums and lighted by cathedral tapers in tall candelabra.

The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a formal gown of white satin designed with sweetheart neckline and leg-of-mutton sleeves. Both carried arm bouquets of Talisman roses.

Floyd Finnegan served as best man for Sergeant Amsberry, and the ushers were James Louquet and Richard Louquet of Helena.

Following the ceremony a reception was held for 100 guests at the Placer Hotel.

The bride attended Helena high school and is employed at the J.C. Penney company as display manager.

Sergeant Amsberry attended schools in Big Timber and the Helena high school and previous to his induction into the Army he was employed in the advertising department of The Montana Record-Herald. He is now stationed at Amarillo Field in the administrative department of the Army air corps.

Mrs. Amsberry will join her husband in Texas next month.
----------
I hope you have found the above information useful.
William and Mary (Duffy) BURKE - Helena

I am looking for information on members of my extended PRENDERGAST family from Illinois who lived in Helena in Lweis and Clark County. One branch of this family moved to Montana around 1915 or so. William Burke married Mary Duffy on 2/7/1899 in Bureau County, Illinois. William was the son of Thomas Burke and Bridget McGrath. Mary was the daughter of John Duffy and Ellen PRENDERGAST.

The older children of William and Mary were born in Bureau County. Sometime shortly before the 1910 census, the family moved to Miner County, South Dakota where they would live a few years. Their youngest daughter Mary T. was born in 1912 while they were living there. A couple years later, the family continued on west to Montana and appear in the 1920 census living in Meagher County. By the 1930 census, they are living in Deer Lodge in Powell County.

Some of their descendants later ended up in Helena. Based on my research to date, I have been able piece together a descendant listing for William and Mary that appears below. If anyone has information on any of the mentioned people, I would like to hear from you. I am glad to share any information that I have on the PRENDERGAST family.
Hi. Thanks for your message.
The Lewis & Clark County website indicates that one of the duties of the Clerk of District Court is to "issue and record MARRIAGE licenses", whereas the Clerk & Recorder records BIRTH and DEATH certificates. I know that this is the case also in Cascade County.

I'm searching for any information and descendants of Charles Arthur Broadwater born September 25, 1840 in St. Charles, Missouri, and died 1892 in Helena, Montana.
Col. Broadwater was a railroad, real estate, and banking magnate. He was friends and worked with my ancestor Robert L. McCulloh at the BROADWATER & MCCULLOH COMPANY of Montana.
Any histories or known personal information regarding these two men will be greatly appreciated.
Gratefully,
Mavis Bassett
mavisbassett@yahoo.com
Just to bring everyone up to date, I just spoke to someone at the genealogy society, Montana State and Lewis and Clark Library, to order a marriage record. The fee for it is now $5.00. If they have the document, they send the original and keep a copy in their files for future requests.

Hope this doesn't discourage anyone from ordering the documents they need, since it isn't 25 cents.

1875 marriage info?

I am hoping to find someone willing to check with St. Peter's Episcopal Church for a wedding record for me, and to tell me what I need to do do obtain a copy if they have the original. There don't seem to be any RAOGK volunteers for L&C County to ask to do this.

The couple were Philip Roberts and Charity Eva, and according to old notes on family history they were married on 14 Aug 1875 by the Rector of St. Peter's, Rev. Eugene L. Toy. I am confident about the marriage date (especially the year and month), but confused by the item on the GenWeb page for L&C county that says that St. Peter's did not come into existence until 1878. An historical sidelight is that the bride had arrived that same day, or possibly the day before, on a stagecoach from Utah that also brought an Episcopal Bishop, Rev. Daniel S. Tuttle.

Thanks.

Joe Callahan (colojoe)
Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness volunteer
Boulder County, Colorado
www.raogk.com

Dora Stecker d. 1985

Grand Old Lady of Sun River Canyon Dies Sept. 20 [1985]

Dora I. Stecker, 84, the “grand old lady of the Sun River Canyon” west of Augusta, died Friday, Sept. 20, 1985, in a Great Falls [MT] hospital.

An Augusta native born to homesteaders who moved from the Helena Valley in 1889, Mrs. Stecker lived alone and operated boarding cabins and a small country store for more than two decades after her third husband, Will, died in 1964.

The cabins, hand-hewn by Will Stecker, are nestled south of Castle Reef at the mouth of the Sun River Canyon. Wares of the country store over the years included gasoline, pop, candy, postcards and fishing tackle.

Mrs. Stecker moved to a Great Falls nursing home in early July after suffering kidney failure. She lived in the nursing home until her death.

Friends of Mrs. Stecker who lived in Conrad have been living in the cabin since she moved to Great Falls, according to a relative.

She received her education in Great Falls, and at the age of 18, married Edward C. Morgan, a minister who made his living running railroad eating-houses. They were divorced nine years later.

Afterward, she returned to Great Falls, where she worked as a waitress and ran the candy department in the Strain Bros. before marrying Clarence Reasman. During the first years of their marriage, her husband drove a gasoline truck, but the couple later purchased a 400-acre dairy farm near Augusta from Dora’s aunt and uncle.

They ran the farm for 12 years before Reasman died in 1950. After his death, she sold the equipment and stock and moved to Augusta, retaining the land. She worked for Phil Pings in the Augusta drug store until she married Will Stecker in 1952.

According to historical essays on the area, Dora met Will Stecker in 1929 when he was photographing workers building the Sun River Dam. She used to haul milk and cream from her family dairy to the workers at the dam.

In a Tribune news report from July 1977, Mrs. Stecker said many of her dreams were fulfilled while married to Will: she had always wanted to see the ocean, and had seen two; she had always wanted to see the redwood forests, “and I loved that,” she said.

The only dream not fulfilled was to take horses into the mountains west of their canyon lodging to see Pretty Prairie and the Chinese Wall, but her husband chartered a pilot who flew the couple over the trails they would have taken.

Her husband died of a heart attack in 1964 after trying to start a ’37 Ford pickup that had frozen during a blizzard. After his death, Mrs. Stecker continued to live at the cabin and to operate the store and boarding cabins.

After many years, she quit cleaning her cabin and instead stacked old newspapers and magazines into massive poles that formed maze-like aisles between the stacks.

Many visitors would stop to visit Stecker and to look at the many trophy game heads, animal hides and memorabilia collected during the decades she had lived there.

During the winters, her cabins were often visited by deer, elk, big horn sheep and black bear. When customers or friends were not calling, she would often occupy herself with card games of solitaire.

For the past several years, friends and neighbors in the canyon would hold big birthday celebrations each year for Stecker, whom they called “the grand old lady of the canyon.”

Stecker said in the 1977 Tribune article that she hoped her health would allow her to finish out her life in her cabin. “I tell the guys up here if they pack me out of this cabin feet first, that’ll be all right,” she said.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Myrtle Lodge No. 20.

A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Central Christian Church with the Rev. Arthur Greenle officiating. Burial was in the Augusta Cemetery.

She is survived by her nephews, Francis B. Smith of Great Falls, George Smith of Carmel, Calif., and a niece, Sharron Lawrence of Albuquerque, N.M. [Transcribed by the MTGenWeb Teton County coordinator with the express permission of the Choteau Acantha, Sept. 26, 1985 issue.]
I checked the Lewis and Clark County Marriage Index,
and found:
August 14, 1875, Book A, Pg 141,
Charity Eva
Philip Roberts

You might try to contact the following to get a copy of the orginal:
The Lewis and Clark Genealogocal Society has more information available in our library. Our volunteers will be happy to look up any additional information within our library or county offices. We ask for a fee of $5.00 for each query plus the cost of copying and postage. Send queries/research requests to: LCCGS QUERIES, P.O. Box 5313, Helena, MT 59604. Queries can also be sent by e-mail to lccgen@mtlib.org.

In the Historic Helena book there is a picture of St. Peter's Episcopal Church Warren and Grand.

I found this information on the home page for St. Peter's
Church which is now located on Park.

Helena was a raucous gold-mining town when Bishop Daniel Sylvester Tuttle and the Rev. E. N. Goddard held their first Sunday services on Aug. 11, 1867. Sunday streets were crowded with men and teams. Auctioneers were selling wares, hurdy-gurdy houses were thronged and more than one hundred business were open. Sunday was not the Lord's day. It was a day for miners to come to town, stock up on supplies and relax.

On another visit, Bishop Tuttle formed a Bishop's committee to create an Episcopal mission in Helena. He launched this effort by celebrating Holy Eucharist at the courthouse on March 28, 1869. Later that year, he paid $1,200 for property on which to build a church. On Warren and Grand Streets, a stone church complete with a bell tower was soon complete for the price of $12,000. The original bell and brass altar rail grace our church today. You can find a painting of that first building in the stairway at the back of the church. Holy Eucharist was first celebrated there on October 19, 1879. The building was consecrated on Nov. 11, 1881.

I am not related,
Cathee
