Hey any info I can get about this would be great, my name is Bill Hillmann, I know of a cowboy in the Hillmann family who killed a guy then later when the sheriff was looking for him at the town's train station he boarded a train then just before he left he kicked the sheriff in the mouth as the train passed.

That's all I got why are you looking for background on this guy?

My name is Benjamin MacBean (my name in the heading is wrong). I'm married to Jenny Johnke, and since I'm done tracing my family, now I'm tracing hers. She's the daughter of Richard William Johnke, born to William Richard Johnke. I believe that Lois was one of his daughters (William's). I'm slowly piecing the family tree together. Looking for a place to stay

Two friends and I are hunting this fall and have drawn cow elk tags for area 410. We were hoping to find some lodging around Winnett somewhere while we are elk hunting. Does anyone know of someone who might rent a room in the area. We will be in the area from about November 3-7.

Hi! My family is originally from Flat Willow (way back), most of us live in Texas now, but a few years ago, I spent a week camping on the old family ranch in Flat Willow about a mile or less from the Johnke family. I met them, out families apparently go back. They're very nice people. I may not be able to help too much, I am only 16 and don't know too much about Flat Willow, but I will be back this summer.

I am seeking information about a George Horn who worked as a ranch hand in and around Winnett in the 1967-1969 time frame. Mr. Horn, who also reportdly played guitar in area bars, is a lost relative of mine, and I would like to know what happened to him. Thanks for any help you can provide. When was your grandfather a drive on the Billings to Roundup Winnett Daily Stage? I am interested because my aunt Alma Greenslit and other relatives lived 16 miles south of Roundup and rode this stage between 1917-1924. Relatives came to visit them and rode the stage from Billings. I am interested in finding out about the stage stops and drivers at this time period. My aunt said the stage in 1921 was a 2-seater touring car. Would love to find photos.

I happened upon your email thread about the Garrisons.

My grandparents were Albert and Lois Senora (Garrison) Coffey. My mother (Twila Coffey McCue) was their daughter. Lois's parents were Catherine Senora Fox and Joseph Garrison. Albert and Lois are both buried in the Winnett Cemetery (Montana).

I have a lot of family history from the Coffey side, but little on the Fox/Garrison side. If you have any you would like to share of this line, I would appreciate it.

I live about 50 miles from where Lois and Albert homesteaded and my Mom grew up.

I have been scanning some of your notes on the board briefly. We have information in our library history files on the garrisons and the Whisonants. You spoke of a letter you have written from some Garrison's and postmarked Winnett in the early 1900's. Also some talk of a flood. WE would LOVE to have a copy of that letter for our history files if at all possible. Please let me know. Thank you.

Oh, I think they will. Petroleum County is sparsley populated (as is the whole state of Montana come to think of it), and most small courthouses will go the extra mile without charging an arm and a leg for it as other states do. You can always phone and ask.

By the way, I found Irving W. Girard obtained 311.47 acres in Petroleum County on 04 Jan 1918 for homestead purposes. Go to the following link and type in "Montana" and the surname "Girard."

Hello again! I have now been able to check the Montana Death Index 1907-1953:

GIRARD, Irving
Died: 21 May 1935 at 57 years of age
Index #: DL 3204

The "DL" means that he died in Deer Lodge County, and not in Petroleum County. If he was not a resident of Deer Lodge County, it could be that he was hospitalized in either the Montana State (mental) Hospital located at Warm Springs, or in the Galen State Hospital (tuberculosis & other lung ailments), located at Galen, Montana. If he had moved to this county, it is possible that he worked on the Anaconda Company Copper smelter. Both Warm Springs and Galen are in Deer Lodge County. To obtain a Death Certificate, contact the Clerk & Recorder:

I think the fee is about $3.00 plus a stamped, self-addressed envelope. I recommend that you phone them first to see if they actually have the certificate, and if they do, ask about payment with a personal check. I must caution you, however, that sometimes, counties do not have the certificates for any number of reasons, and you can only obtain one from the Dept. of Vital Statistics in Helena, Montana. Should it be necessary for you to do that, I will give you that address.
