Information about belgian immigrants (williams - Valier, Montana)

Hello,
my grandfather found the first page of a letter written in 1913 from a belgian immigrant. The letter describes the voyage of his family. We miss the last part of the letter so we don't know who wrote this.
There should have been a belgian colony in Valier who were invited by Monsignor Victor Day.
I want to find more information about the belgian colony in Valier (Williams). Maybe I can find out who wrote this letter.
Thanks for your support.
Jeroen

Would it be possible for anyone to take pity on me here in Missouri and help locate his obit?

Also does anyone know a website I can go to that shows the cemeteries in Conrad and a listing of names of buried in each? According to Everett's death certificate he was buried in Conrad, MT on November 15, 1939.

I will be most happy to offset the cost of the obit; and, by the same token, should you need help here in Missouri on your family line, I will do my best to help.

J Smith

Hello,
There is a headstone within the Lakeside cemetery for CRAWFORD, and it serves for two graves side-by-side. One of the deceased is Marion Crawford, my husband's grandfather, who died in 1933. The other deceased is Marion's mother. I have a photo taken in the cemetery, but the letters on the headstone are unreadable in the photo. Is there someone who can let me know the exact information for both graves; or, is there somewhere I can look this up? Also, does the cemetery have other information on file regarding this family's headstone? Are there other deceased associated with this CRAWFORD headstone?
Many thanks, Nan.

Pauli / Pauly: Ger>Wis>Iowa>S.Dakota>Pondera & Flathead Montana> and onward

In the near future, I plan to post information on my PAULI / PAULY line from Germany. There is more ancestral information to be found, but I've made a good beginning.

The South Dakota connection started, as far I as can determine, between 1900 and 1910 when Thomas Pauli and wife Anna Klinkhammer settled in Edmunds Co, Ipswich. He had a farm and was a rural mail carrier. They had a large family which included sons Leo J. and Harry F. (see below for more info) Harry F. and wife Gladys Miller moved to Montana, and died in Kalispell, Flathead. Harry's parents--Thomas Pauli and Anna Klinkhammer Pauli died in Pondera.

In brief, I am related on this direct Pauli line:

Thomas Pauli, shepherd b Stroheich, Oberehei-Stroheich, d 1788 Gelenberg, Germany and wife, Anna Catharina Schumacher b Nov. 11, 1742 and d Dec. 2, 1802 Gelenberg.

Son Peter Pauly, b about 1770 Gelenberg, d Feb. 7, 1839 Ripsdorf, Blankenheim, Germany and wife Gertrud Gees / Gaes, b April 14, 1787 in Ripsdorf and d July 24, 1850 Ripsdorf, Blankenheim, Germany. Married May 31, 1814, Dollendorf, Blankenheim, Germany.

Sons, born in Ripsdorf: Johann Pauly, b Feb. 25 1819, died May 31, 1876; Peter Pauly b about 1821, d after July 24, 1850; and Johann Joseph Pauly, b Nov. 28, 1826 Ripsdorf, immigrated in 1850s to Glen Haven, Grant County, Wisconsin.

The Johann Pauly, b 1819 is my great-great grandfather who married Barbara Klinkhammer, b March 18, 1820 in Ripsdorf. They married Jan. 29, 1845, Dollendorf, Blankenheim, Germany. She died May 20, 1868. I show 8 children. Their daughter Anna Helena Magdalena Pauly, b Sept. 7, 1856 is my great grandmother.

Anna Helena Magdalena immigrated May 1, 1883 arriving in NYC on the SS Gellert with her husband Johann Joseph WILMS / WILLMS and infant son Heinrich Joseph, b Jan. 30, 1883, Blankenheim, Germany. He became Joseph Henry Williams in America--my grandfather.

Peter Pauly and Gertrud Gees' son Johann Joseph Pauly / Pauli immigated in the 1850s to Wisconsin. He is found living next door to my above Joh. Joseph WILLMS and Anna Helena Magdalena Pauly family on the 1895 Wisconsin census. He is Magdalena's uncle.

This Johann Joseph Pauli, marries (Mary Ahrends I think) and they have at least two children: Thomas, b 1859 Glen Haven, Wis., and Catharina "Kate" Pauli, b about 1853, Glen Haven Wisconsin. Maybe in her 2nd marriage, Catharina marries Casper Eggerth (1900) in Guttenberg, Clayton, Iowa and by 1920, her father Joh. Jos. Pauli is living in their household.

It is on the brother Thomas' line (b 1859) that I have been able to track my family. Thomas married Anna / Annie Klinkhammer in 1885 in Glen Haven, Wisconsin. She had lived there with her father Peter, but by 1885 he was living in Dubuque, Iowa. However, on the marriage record, there were other Klinkhammer witnesses who still lived in Glen Haven.

Thomas and Annie had a large family. Their first son, Leo Joseph Pauli was born Feb. 9, 1891 in Glen Haven, Grant County, Wisconsin. Other children I've found are: Harry F., 1897, William Peter, 1893; Elizabeth, Ida C, 1903, Rose, 1909, Sylvia, 1901. By about 1892 or so, Thomas and Annie moved to Guttenberg, Clayton, Iowa. In 1898, my WILLMS (Joh. Joseph and Anna Helena Magdalena Pauly Wilms) moved to Guttenberg also. On the 1900 census the two families were living in the same township, 9 houses apart on the same census page. Magdalena's husband, Joseph the church painter /gilder, died April 1909 in Guttenberg, Clayton, Iowa.

Thomas and Annie moved to South Dakota, Ipswich, Edmunds County by the 1910 census, along with son Leo and other children. Leo later married Mary Clifford. A brother Harry F. married Gladys Miller. (I'll show more of this later--hope to post whole tree online)

Harry. F. and Gladys moved to Montana, as did Thomas and Annie Klinkhammer Pauli, and the both died in Pondera, Montana. Harry F. and Gladys died in Kalispell, Montana where they have many descendants. Leo Joseph returned at some point to Wisconsin, to Watertown, Jefferson, Wisconsin---where he has many descendants.

I've just established contact with some of these descendants and hope to learn more information. I also talked to a Harry Phillip Pauli in Colorado---and while his line is from Germany, his direct line migrated to Russia before immigrating to Colorado. Could be part of my same line--don't yet have a link.

This summer I was in Germany in the Eifel area where they Pauly / Pauli, Klinkhammer and Willms and related lines lived in the 1700s until they immigrated. Some still live in the Eifel area. The Pauli / Pauly line is found there in the mid 1700s, but it seems they came from elsewhere. So, the question lingers, where ...?

Regarding my Willms in Blankenheim, they were Willems before they came to the Eifel town of Blankenheim in Germany---having come most likely from Hoogeloon, The Netherlands / Belgium--according to Blankenheim 's historical group researchers. There were still Wilms / Willms descendants recorded in Blankenheim until 1960, from the data taken from tax rolls by the local historical society---and likely still there today

A possible Pauly cousin born there, came to America and has returned with a husband, stepped out her door when she heard us talking---my brief explanation of why we were looking at her house was because my Willms had once lived there, etc. brought the discovery of a Pauly connection. She asked if I had seen the large Pauly house up the street. These are dwellings built in the 1600s / 1700s--some earlier. One former Wilms house has a historical marker now.

So--I've got more research and questions for the Blankenheim Historical group. I am now a member of "Um Burg und Quelle," and hope to soon begin receiving their twice yearly publication--and struggling to translate the German! But it is worth it---so much info. And the people I met in Blankenheim--- and also in Bad Munstereifel where I have a Wilms, Riquier, Nuss, Weber, Graf etc. connection---were all very nice and helpful. In fact, we visited with newly found cousins who were wonderful hosts. (This is a long story)

On a private German GenNet, I've had help from researchers studying the family lines in the Eifel--and they have provided me with extensive information from their concentrated group research. And more is to come---especially if I can manage to communicate a bit better with them---I'm lacking in German speaking ability! I need to ask for help in filling out the families shown on the my direct line. It seems likely others immigrated at various times.

More later on---but if anybody sees any connection to these famlies, please contact me. We have a lot to learn and a lot to share!

Audrey Williams Stanaland
Loudon, TN

I am trying to get information on a long lost family on our tree. I have from census found that in 1910 William Harold Steele Sr. and his wife Eva Leah Chessman lived in Kalispell, Flathead, MT with their children. She gave birth to a Mable Steele around 1913 and could have died in child birth because by the 1920 census he is married to a Bessie Unk and in 1923 they had a son together Robert B Steele. They were in Pondera MT then. On some papers I had it said he married Bessie in 1915. did not say where. I need some information on this family. He was a farmer, but in the 1920 or 1930's he was an assistant Post Master in Conrad Pondera MT. Any information will be appreciated or suggests where I might look. I have done all the census, US, MT, available on Ancestry.com.

Looking for information and/or descendants of a John L Hennessy who is in the 1930 census for Conrad, Pondera, MT. John is listed as 44 at that time, born in Canada, and living with wife Mary (nee Sheedy) and children Mary, Regina, Michael and Bernard. Also living with them is John's mother in law, 74-yr old Bridget Sheedy.
Am researching the Sheedy side of this family. John's wife would have been my 1C2R. My great grandfather James Sheedy was a younger brother of Mary Sheedy/Hennessy's father Patrick Sheedy, born Renfrew Co, Ontario, Canada.
Patrick and wife Bridget moved to Michigan from Ontario around 1887, and I believe had their children there.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It seems like everything is listed in School districts. there was not a school there until 1911. The Higgens school was opened after that . Helen Lavin was one of the teachers.
How can one obtain obtain recent local obits for Pondera County? I am interested in obtaining local obituaries for Robert Jay HERMAN who died 6 July 2001 at age 88 in Conrad, as well as his father, Franklin John HERMAN who died in or near Conrad in February 1983. I assume that the local newspaper would be the Independent Observer in Conrad. Is there a local historical society that can do this? Or, the Conrad Public Library? Or an independent researcher? Frank HERMAN was a half brother to my wife's mother. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.
I am researching my family tree on my father's mother's side.

My father was Frederick Louis Brune, and he was born in San Francisco, California, on August 6, 1944. He died on January 28, 1997.

My grandmother was Mary (Mink) Brune, and she was born in Conrad, Montana on September 14, 1915. She died in November 1991 in Lynden, Washington. One brother, John William Mink, lived all his life in Montana. He also was born in Conrad, on November 10, 1919, and died there on December 31, 1996. I have no further information on him.

Their mother was Jennie Kooistra, but I have no further information on her.

Their father was Louis Mink, and I've hit a dead-end on him as well.

I have found information on my family through Family Tree Maker (and Ancestry.com), that is inaccurate. If you have information, please let me know your source. My own sources are first-person, birth and death records, baby books, and marriage records. I will be happy to share copies.

Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. Please answer by posting here, or you may email me directly.

Thank you!
I have letters handed down in my husband's family from a Mrs. Mell(Malvina) Skeen Cooper who was a homesteader in the latter part of the 1800's. Her mailing address was Valier, which I have just found out is in Pondera Co. The family later moved on, I think, perhaps to Colorado, although some of her children may have stayed in the area. She was originally from the Philadelphia area and was my husband's grandfather's sister. His grandfather died many years before my husband was born and his grandmother eventually lost track, I believe, of the Cooper family. I just thought that someone in that family might be exploring their roots and might check up on the Valier connection. I don't have any information about earlier Coopers but know a little about the Skeens.

Carolyn Brittain, Roanoke, Va.
George Thorne of Montana, 1890 - 1973

George THORNE, son of William Wright THORNE and Christine LUNGSTROM, was born 12/20/1890 in Helena, Montana. In 1939, he was living in Valier, PONDERA COUNTY, Montana (his social security application indicates he was working for Cargill, Inc at that time). He died in Highwood, Chouteau County, Montana, in 1973, according to the social security death index.

I am interested in discovering if he married during the period 1920 - 1973 and if there were any children. He was the older brother of my late mother, Mildred Caroline Thorne Wands.

He disappeared from his home in Rhame, North Dakota, in 1920 or 1921, and was eventually declared legally dead. Recent research has turned up his social security application and now we want to know what happened to him -- and if there are any more Thorne cousins out there.

He has one remaining elderly sister, and we would love to clear up this mystery before it's too late for her.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Looking for history & information about the now defunct town of Fowler, MT. My Great Grandfather Andrew A. Zacharias lived there around 1911 and married Ottillie Tank, who reportedly ran a restaurant in Fowler. We also know of a Hans Zacharias (kin?) burried in Conrad, MT. Any information about any of the above (even general Fowler information/pictures, etc.) would be greatly appreciated.
Information on father

Pondera County, Montana. My father was born, I think, at Valier, Montana, about 1909. Rumor has it that his family moved there from Canada, but that is not confirmed. Something happened and he and his brother, Earl, were placed in the orphanage at Twin Bridges, Montana. I think Earl may have been born in Canada and was a few years older than my father. My father was adopted by the Murphy's in Butte, Montana, and Earl was adopted or placed in foster care of the Smith's in Eastern Washington state. Forty years later they met each other for the first time after their separation. Both are now deceased. We believe their name was Wilkins or Wilkinson at the time they were placed in the orphanage. They thought they may have had a sister, but that was never confirmed. The orphanage burned down many years ago and all records destroyed.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Daniel P. Murphy, Jr.
