Hi, I am the editor of the Clan Forsyth Society USA newsletter and this issue we have an article about Forsyth Montana. We need a photo to go with the article. Although we could use Gen. Forsyth for which the city is named, I would rather have some thing from the city. A building that is well known, the "Welcome to Forsyth" sign or anything you think may be good to use.

Not much time since I need it before Sept 21, 2008 but if anyone can send me a photo, I would appreciate it and give you credit in the newsletter.

Marsha Richardson
I am researching my Simon SNIDER and Lillie (HILL) SNIDER family. Their daughters are: Anna Linn, Mertle, Nellie, and Luella.

Simon was born abt. 1848, in Ohio - Lillie was born abt. 1861, in Iowa - Anna was born abt. 1879; Nellie, abt. 1880; Mertle, abt. 18??, and Luella, 18??, all girls weree thought to be born in Kansas. Simon and Lillie were married in Jewell Co., Kansas in 1875. Their divorce was about 1884.

Anna Linn was married first to James Albert Lamb (in MO), then to Jones Salem Clair (WA), and then to Jasper Stillwell (IA). Nellie was married to Howard L. SPRAGUE (1896 in MT) - Simon and Lillie were said to be living in Harris, Montana at the time (divorced) but Lillie may be married to a Rudolph, or Adolph LAMB. Their daughter, Luella, married Franklin P. SPRAGUE (MT). Franklin and Howard are suppose to be cousins.

The 1910 Census has Simon P. Snider living in District 215, Lame Deer, Page 70B.

I would be happy to share any family info and hope that someone else might have more info to share!
Thanks!

Can anyone steer me to info on my great uncle Carl Casper Quick. According to his WWI draft registration he was a teacher in Ingomar, Montana (Rosebud Co) at the time he registered June 5, 1917. He was born in Wisconsin approx. 1896. Family lore says he went off to WWI and died in Europe but I have been unable to find record of him in the service. I had seen somewhere that the army formed the 91st Infantry Division with men from western states including Montana around Aug. 1917 and sent them to Camp Lewis, Washington state for training. Any info greatly appreciated.

Davis, Charles 1924 obit, 1st sheriff Rosebud County

I found this obituary among my parents' things. Charles Davis' son was my dad's stepfather.

1924
"OBITUARY -- DAVIS

"Charles Davis, whose death was briefly mentioned in the last issue of The Mail, was born at Sherwood, Branch county, Michigan, Nov. 28th, 1862, and departed this life at the home near Langdon Oct. 13th, 1924, aged 61 years, 10 months and 16 days.

"Deceased was the son of Oscar and Elizabeth Davis and at the age of sixteen moved with the family from Michigan to Minnesota. He was united in marriage with Almira Coy at Silver Creek, Minn., Jan. 1st, 1882. To this union were born seven children, Frank, the eldest, preceded his father to the grave a year ago, on Oct. 22nd, 1923, at Cedro Wooley (sic), Wash. Mr. Davis is survived by his wife and the following children: Floyd E., of Annandale, Mont.; Chas. Morris, who recently returned home from Wyoming; Mrs. Elizabeth Kamhoot of Thurlow, Minn.; Mrs. Mabel Harriman of Greenwood, Neb.; Mrs. Myra Smith of Hamburg, Ia., and Theodore William at home.

"For over a quarter of a century the family of Charles Davis was closely identified with the upbuilding of Eastern Montana, Mr. Davis being a rancher for that period. In 1902, when the eastern half of Montana was divided and Rosebud county organized, Mr. Davis was appointed its first sheriff. He served in that capacity for three years. At that time a rough element of citizenry was prevalent in the mining camps in and near Anaconda and neighboring towns, and Sheriff Davis's fearlessness and zeal for upholding the law proved a valuable asset to the new county of Rosebud. After holding the office of Sheriff for three years Mr. Davis was elected county treasurer of Rosebud county in 1905, and served in that capacity for one term.

"The family moved to Southern Missouri in 1911 and to Hamburg, Iowa, in 1915. In 1919 they came to Atchison county, settling on their farm of 240 acres southeast of Landon.

"For twenty-five years Mr. Davis had been a member of the Masonic fraternity. Testimony of his friends tells of his purpose of right living and right doing, confirmed by the statement of a member of his family, 'Those who knew him best loved him most.'

"The funeral service was held Wednesday, Oct. 15th, at the home, by Rev. C. F. Jenkins, interment taking place at Hunter cemetery."
DAVIS

"A letter received from Mrs. Frank W. Davis of Sedro Woolley, Wash., tells of the sudden death of her husband on October 22, after an illness of ten days. The letter states that Mr. Davis came home from work one night sick, and within a few minutes lost consciousness, remaining in a state of coma until his death, which was caused by a hemorrhage of the brain.

"The Davis family were old and long residents of Rosebud, making that their home until about four years ago when they moved to Washington where they have resided since.

"Those who knew Frank Davis knew a man of high character and honor in both personal and business association, and he was regarded with esteem and friendship by all with whom he came in contact. During his last years in Rosebud, he was associated with the Mercantile Company store, where he was one of the genial clerks. He leaves a wife and family to mourn his loss, besides many relatives and friends in this and other parts of the country.

"The Rosebud friends and those of the surrounding country extend their deepest sympathy to Mrs. Davis and the children and should there be those who would care to write her at this time, the address given above will reach her."
My great-grandfather James Rieves Lane died in Forsyth on March 20, 1898. He was a deputy sheriff at the time. I have heard various versions about his death from the family - from accidental gunshot to murder to suicide. I'd love to have someone look in the Forsyth Times for the period around the date of death. If it was anything sensational, I'm sure it would have made the news. An obit would also be just dandy!

Richer", and his parents were born in New York. I believe he is Orlando Richer, aka Orville Richer, who lived in Armenia, Junaeu County, WI and was married to Josephine Hewitt there. He is my husband's great-great-grandfather and there has always been a story about how he abandoned the family and went westward to either Montana or Wyoming. His parents were Alanson Potter Richer and Emeline Babcock, both of New York.

Her maiden surname was HUFFMAN, and she had resided in Anaconda with her parents, John W. & Jennie Huffman. At the time of her father's death, December of 1922 in Anaconda, she was residing in Forsyth. She also had a sister, Mary A. "Dottie" (Huffman) McMillen who was residing in Sidney, MT at that time. I am searching for any information regarding her SLATER relatives and descendents. I do not know what her husband's first name was. I would like to know date of birth, date & place of marriage (and to whom) and date and place of death, and names of children, if any.

I have learned that Ira Harvey SLATER, b. 22 Feb 1895 in Forsyth, Rosebud County, Montana, and d. 30 Jul 1974 in Fremont, Alameda County, Calif., was the son of William SLATER, b. in Canada, and Idelia (PAGE) SLATER-VALLEY, b 17 Jun 1862 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and d. 1923 in Forsyth. Ira married Ila HUFFMAN, who was b. 6 Apr 1897 in Grafton, Iowa, and d. 23 July 1978 in Fremont, Alameda County, Calif. Apparently Ira's dad William died and his mother, Idelia, remarried to a Mr. Valley of Forsyth. Ira had at least 3 brothers: William, Harry, Burt and 2 daughters: Mrs. Roy Huffman/Hoffman and Mrs. George Klotz. I would like to learn these married women's given and maiden surnames and whether or not they had any children. Roy HUFFMAN was a brother to Ila HUFFMAN, and it is possible that he was married to both sisters as different times! Does anybody remember this family? I would really like to hear from anyone who can help me out.

I am looking for resources (lookup assistance, or locations that I can find the information) to obtain more detail on the death of John G. Kinghorn on July 5, 1966 in Rosebud County, Montana.

I believe that this is my grandfather based on dates/ages, however, have no knowledge of him being in Montana until now. His home was in Texas but he was suppose to be going to a survey job when he died last month on July 29th, I believe.

Any help would be appreciated. We called the coroner at Beal's Funeral Home but he refused to talk with us. It appears that a former girlfriend of Paul's had been harrassing people, so he was not happy when we reached him unfortunately.

Price Family - Forsyth 1881

Mary Price married Peter Jackson in April 1883. 1933 they celebrated their 50th Aniversary in Forsyth. I have a letter from her to my Great Grandma Hattie Kearney in Grand Rapids MN and it is addressed to Aunt Hattie. I can not figure out how she is related to my Grandma, she is a year younger then my Grandma. Obviously it is through Mary's mother but I can't seem to find out what her mother or father's name is. Her siblings were Katie, Harry, Jimmy, Johnny, and Josie (brother). Her Father was a contractor to the N. P. Railroad and they moved to the Forsyth area from Akron OH in 1881. Anyone with any information on this pioneer family to your area would be a wonderful blessing to me and my family.
1930's & 1940's South Eastern Montana

•Hi All;
•I am researching my family history and...
•I have a court transcript of testimony given by my mother's father. It seems to be a murder trial in Cartersville, Montana, about 1942/3. He states that he lived on a farm about a mile and a half from the Post Office, which is down at HARKEN Store.
•The defendant is James A ALLISON, owner of a tavern. The fatal event was on the 26th/27th of July, 1942. My grandfather, Nis RASK and several other names are mentioned; Forsyth, Beacon Club, BEYL, ARMSTRONG, VASSAU, SEADER, CAROLAN, BURNS, DOWLIN, O'HERN, KEELEY. I believe the victim is Mack "Babe" HALL.
•My grandfather testified that he worked for the Milwaukee Railroad as a section laborer. This led me to the Railroad Retirement Board. RRB sent me his service dates, all for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad Company. He worked as "Extra Gang & Section Men" Apr-Oct 1937; Feb, Mar, Jun & Oct 1939; Jun-Oct 1939; Jan, Mar, Apr & Jun-Oct 1940; Feb & Apr-Dec 1941; Apr-Dec 1942; Jan-Dec 1943; and as "Gang and Section Foremen" Jan-May 1944.
•They also sent me a copy of his Social Security Application, signed 26 Aug 1937, Cartersville, Montana. Stamped with the same, very long, Company name. They do not have his address at the time of his service. It could have been anywhere, but was probably in the SE MT area. I have several papers with reference to locations in all 3 counties: Custer, Rosebud and Powder River.
•Thought I would post to see if this was familiar to anyone else. Nis Bonniksen RASK was married to 3 different women (during this time?): Mary Anna BELL BURNES MC CALL, Anna Lucille ???, and Lulu or Lula ??? In this order, but I have no exact dates.
•Would like to know more about this area in the 30's and 40's, more about the case and about the work he would have done for the railroad. Thanks for yor time, and help. Tricia tilliestree@webtv.net
