Bertha Carolina Shaw was born 19 May,1887 to David and Lucy Jane (Patterson) Brunner in Edon, Ohio. She Passed away on Saturday, August 14, 1993, at the Crowell Memorial Home in Blair, Nebraska, at the age of 106 years. At the age of 7 years, Bertha moved with her family by covered wagon to Carbondale, Kansas. On November 11,1904 Bertha was united in marriage to James Shaw at Jerico Springs, Missouri. To this union six children were born. Her earlier years of married life were spent in and near Jerico Springs. Later moving to Kansas City and in September of 1952 moving to Craig, Nebraska. Bertha had been a resident of the Crowell Memorial Home in Blair since February 1968. She spent many hours with her love of music, singing and playing the mandolin and harmonica. She wrote words and music for many songs, wrote poetry and painted pictures. Bertha enjoyed her family and found beauty and especially humor in everything. Survivors include sons, William of Osage City, Kansas, Fred and his wife, Lois and Charles and his wife, Bernice all of Kansas City, Missouri; daughter Edith and her husband Aaron Begley of Harlan, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, including Ardith Maxwell of Tekamah; 39 great grandchildren; 49 great-great grandchildren and 2 great-great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James; an infant son; daughter, Gladys Begley and grandson, Jack Begley.
