Hello! I'm wondering if anyone can help me get an obituary and a marriage date on Ethel Jane Perkin born 1886 and died 1922 in Maywood, buried at the Maywood Cemetery. Her last name is Styskal on her stone and it has been said that she married my great granduncle, James Styskal. I cannot find ethel in the 1920 census, but i do find James who is living in Laird working as a grain farmer and lives on Commercial street. He is listed as single. So if they were married it would have to be after the census date of January 20, 1920. But then Ethel died in 1922. I don't even have a date for her death or know why she died. She was the daughter of Joseph Henry Perkin and wife Nellie Luterbine. I have subscriptions to ancestry, genealogy bank and newspaperarchives.com and have not found anything on them. Any help would be appreciated. I live in St. lOuis, MO

I'm Tanya Kahler. My grandfather was Daniel Kahler, Joseph and Anna's son. My grandma ruby put the town that was I think was bohemia or Germany. The book was either about Maywood or frontier co. Can't remember but I know the book can be found at the north Platte public library, in north Platte ne. The library in Curtis might have a copy too. I had it wrote down at one time but can't find now. Also I don't think great grandma and grandpa came over at the same time. I think grandma came over later when grandpa got the place south of Maywood. At least that's how I was told it by my grandma ruby. Please let me know what you find cause I have always been interested to know more about the family.

I have spoken with the Scharfs in Curtis, and they said you have the wrong branch of the Scharfs. The Adam listed on census reports full name was William Adam. His parents were John and Sara Anna (McKnight) Scharf, both born in Ireland. I believe this Adam was born in Canada. He and his wife had no daughter named Eliza or Louisa. The first entry is the correct lineage for the Adam in Curtis.
Good luch in your search.

I looked for her in the few cemetery's who have online indexes but didn't find her.

Her death record is over 50 years old, therefore, you can order a copy of it from the Nebraska Dept Health & Human Services, http://dhhs.ne.gov/publichealth/pages/vitalrecords.aspx.

There isn't an obituary volunteer in this county but Frontier County Genealogical Society, PO Box 242, Curtis, NE 69025 might be able to look one up. I couldn't find a web site for them. Successful Searching!

I deduced the following from the Curtis NE centennial book.

Charles and Millie had a daughter Freda. She married George Wetzel. They still live in Curtis. George and Freda had a Daughter, Diane. She is a reporter for the North Platte Telegraph. www.nptelegraph.com

Adam and Beatrice had a son John who retained the family farm in Curtis. There are two John Scharf's listed in the online tele directory www.anywho.com.

J.C. Schmelzel is listed on p. 17 in Lower Medicine pct, in Frontier Co. I assume this makes him a farmer. I haven't looked up all the column titles. There must be a corresponding listing, with family, in the population census?

In 1893 William Helman, a lumber and coal dealer in Arapahoe, sent a letter and some petitions signed by "some of the oldest and best citizens" in the Arapahoe and Cambridge areas to the governor of the state of Washington, asking for the release of Francis Cushing. I've posted the document and a transcription ( http://cushings.com/roots/data/cushings/Hellman_petition.htm ) to my genealogy web site. Signers were from Furnas and Frontier counties. I've tried to identify the signers from census and directory records, to make sure I transcribed their names, often difficult to read, correctly. I have not identified many of them. If you recognize a signer, please send me a name, residence, and occupation and I'll add it to the transcription.

Mike Cushing
http://www.cushings.com/roots/

Hi Anne,
Good to hear from you. Yes, I am Charlie Burtch's youngest daughter. My dad died in 1975 from a massive heart attack, but cardiac conditions tend to run in the family. Orvil Burtch, Bill and my dad's dad, died of heart failure when my dad was 9 years old. I am on a business trip in New Mexico right now and therefore do not have access to any of my records. But what I do recall is that a Tribelpiece is buried in the family cemetary plot outside of Curtis and next to the old Orvil Burtch farm. Does Brice know that Gramma Annie Burtch and all the kids had to move off of the farm after Orvil died because Charles Burtch, great-grandfather Burch took the farm in trade for paying of grandpa Burtch's hospital bill?
Again, so good to hear from you. My sister's and I think of Bill's kids often and Brice and his sister "Dee" are the only ones I really remember. Please tell Brice hello for me.
sincerely,
Patsy Burtch Cornelius

More info......
CYRUS WOODRING DEAD
“The people of Salem and vicinity were startled yesterday by the sad intelligence that Cyrus Woodring of the West Nemaha Mills had died at his home three and a half miles west of here with strangulated hernia at 12:30 P.M.”
The Obituary recaps his birth in PA. as well as discusses his bowel problems that he was not expected to recover from.
“To them were born thirteen children of which eleven survive their father. He lived twenty years in Illinois, three years in Missouri and three years in Nebraska”
I believe this is from Falls City newspaper obituary.

Note those dates seem very far off to me.
I have him located in Stanberry, Gentry Co. MO in 1883. At that time he was moving the local flour Mill to Nebraska. I believe he and the family were in Nebraska from about 1885 to 1900.
In notes from Ruth Woodring;
“ Cyrus bought a Mill at Milledgeville, Ill. , And operated it for about nine years. He then traded it for land in White Side County, Illinois, living there about two years. He then traded the white Side land for a Mill in Stanberry, MO. And moved this mill’s machinery to a mill south of Indianola, in Danbury, NE. Cyrus then traded the Danbury mill for land owned by a Mr. Walsworth and located seven miles north of Cambridge, NE. Cyrus was then hired by Mr. John Lewis Sanders and worked for him for a number of years at the Stockville (NE) mill.”
She goes on talking about Hiram and his family. Hiram had been working with his dad moving the mills and worked at the Stockville mill, even after he married Mattie.

I am searching for any and all information on Hiram’s sister Julia Elma Woodring who at the time they lived in stockville was married to Jas Riley Stephen. If you ever come across old letters talking about James and Elma PLEASE let me know!
I have to look it up yet...busy week. BUT I have an obit I think for Cyrus. I believe he died of a heart attack. He was traveling between Salem and I believe somewhere near Beatrice or Fairbury, he was traveling on Route 8 I believe.
I have a copy of a genealogy that Ruth published. What info do you need?

I found Cyrus in the Maple Cem. in Salem, Richardson Co., NE and Mary is also buried here. she was born 1839 and died 1902
cyrus' t/s says 1836-1900

Nemaha is a city in Richardson Co., NE per 1900 census

I found a charles woodring in the Elwood Cem., in Elwood, NE but the t/s says he was born in 1849 and died in 1940 / in the 1880 census he is listed as being 21 yrs. this would be a 10 year difference in birth years --- do you know when he was born maybe a mistake on the census taker's part ????

always a new mystery == have not found an obit for cyrus yet still looking

merry
