Hitchcock County Public Schools - early 1900s

I have a photo of what appears to be a graduating class of boys and girls with a fabric banner in the middle of the students titled "Hitchcock County Public Schools". I have one person identified in the photo - George F. Lindstrom, born Aug 1887 in Marion County, Missouri. George is with his parents in the 1900 U.S. Census in Marion County, MO and then in the 1910 U.S.Census of Lewis County, MO with his brother. I could not find another Hitchcock County (not in MO or Illinois), only in NE. So, I have no idea why he was in Nebraska. Can anyone help me verify what school this photo is from, the occasion, and the date? Or can you send me to someone who can? Thanks.

"OUR BURGENLAND ROOTS" RESEARCH GROUP
If you have ancestors from Austria-Hungary, particularly the Burgenland area, who settled in northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska, you might like to join our social network called Our Burgenland Roots. This fun and recently formed group is committed to compiling and sharing genealogical and related records (e.g., photos, family histories and other documents) to the mutual benefit of its members.

Interested in joining, go to www.myfamily.com/group/ourburgenlandroots and "Request to Join This Group".

Additional information about the group. It formed initially as an email exchange but, wanting a better way to do this, a member set them up in January as a private family group on MyFamily.com, a sister site to Ancestry.com. There are currently (in mid-March) 39 members who have posted 9 family trees, 21 photo albums (holding over 300 photos, scans, & clippings) and 12 data files, and who also have 70 discussion threads underway. For BB members who have family from this area, it appears to be a great group to join!

Thank you! What a surprise. We also went to Culbertson, in 2007, and found the building missing, as well as his home. Had no idea exactly where either one was so asked at the bank, and then walked down to the now-vacant lot. Last saw Doc in about 1955 in McCook when I was there on tour with the Nebraska Wesleyan Band. We have his rolltop desk and dental cabinet (can still smell the "dental smell"), and I remember it well in his office. Have not looked at the picture yet, but that's exciting! Do you know what was on the bottom floor of the building? I remember it as being empty. We got gas or a softdrink or something at the site of the zoo--the clerk said we were in the right place. Can't tell you exactly where his house was--never did know an actual address--maybe a couple streets west of the bank, and on the southwest corner of a dead-end street. Seems like it was maybe on the same street as the zoo. Not sure if my email can be shown here, sdelahoyde at netscape dot net, or not. Thanks again!!

Just saw your post. I remember Dr. Keith from being a patient as a child! Yes, he was on the second floor, and it was the Wacker building, on the sw corner of Kleven and Wyoming. Went back to Culbertson last spring and that building has been gone for quite some time I understand. There is a picture of it on www.casde.unl.edu on history of Hitchcock/Culbertson - website of University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The Wackers were relatives on my mother's side. And I do remember the zoo.

Could someone help be located date and place of death for Harvey White who was born in February 1835 in Indiana. His wife was Amanda Tomlinson Powers, and they were married in Indiana on 22 May 1856. Sometime between 1880 and 1900, they migrated to Culbertson, Hitchcock Co, NE where Harvey worked as a carpenter. Harvey was 65 years old when the 1900 census listed him in Culbertson. Given his age, I am wondering if he and Amanda died there.

Can anyone find a death record for Harvey and Amanda?
Thank you.
Ruth Hastie

Kathy,
The info I am looking for is the names of the parents of Rebecca Parsons or Parson. I would like to get a death certificate or obit that would give me the names of her parents. It would help me as I am doing my wife's family tree (Brooks) and Rebecca is the only child of James Brooks-Barbara Mason who I don't know much about, other that she was born in 1839 (Millersburg, Holmes, Ohio), was in the 1850 census, but disappeared after that.
It this Rebecca is indeed the person I'm looking for, then I will know if I am on the right track. If not, there is a lot of info I can just disregard.
I have a photo of her grave. That's where her married name is Parson, not Parsons.
Thanks for your quick reply.

It seems to be pretty accurate, except some of the early generations don't quite line up with the various censuses.

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/t/r/Jerry-R-Str...

Daniel Strayer of Stratton, NE is off the Hans Stroeher line, Generation 9, person 51.

Could yours be descendants of Generation 7, person 23, Jacob Strayer? There are no birthdates, but children include both Elizabeth and Daniel.

Under the Johanes Mattes Stroeher line, Generation 3, person 6, Jacob also has children Elizabeth and Daniel.

Why am I still amazed when I run into name duplications like this?

thank you for your reply regarding Daniel Strayer, however since the time of my original posting I have found that the Daniel Strayer whom would be connected to my family would be the following:
Daniel: Born 27 February 1848 in Ohio. Served as Private, Capt. Pace's Co., 11 Reg't Missouri Cavalry. Enrolled 21 Jan, 1863 at Independence. Deserted March 41, 1863 at Camp Comyn. Died 1 March 1869, buried Poplar Hill Cemetery, Allegan Co., Michigan.
He married an Elizabeth Milsap in Atchison county, MO in 1867.
Does he happen to connect to the Daniel Strayer you reference?
Again thank you for your reply and your help.

I do not have a Milo Hardin as one of William H Hardin's children. This generation of Hardins, for me, is confirmed. William H Hardin was married to Elizabeth Gilmore. They had several children, youngest of which was George S Hardin, father of William A Hardin, who married Sarah Maude Fischer, and was the father of Alfred S Hardin, grandfather of me.
We are definitely connected by McGonegal and Fisher, though.
Milo must be in there somewhere.

Hi Nedra,
There are no Browns in Grove Cemetery, nor in Cornell to the west as far as I can tell. Although commonly called "Stone Church Cemetery", and basically true due to the proximity, Grove Cemetery was never affiliated with the Stone Church. It's not the Church cemetery, and I don't have the Stone Church records. If you'd like to e-mail me privately, I may be able to make a referral in that regard. The few notes I have on the founders/builders doesn't include a Brown.

In "Hitchcock County History, 1873-1989", compiled by the Hitchcock County Historical Society, there's a piece on the Culbertson's Women's Club that says a Mrs. Fannie D. Brown was one of the Charter members in Feb 1908. Have you checked Culbertson Cemetery? I also notice a piece that mentions the Burton Homestead. The house built by the Burtons is still occupied - I've been in it many times.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Kathy arrow4k @ charter.net

The earlier post mentioned Roger and Lizzie Barnes as members of Driftwood Sod Church and their sons helping build Stone Church.

Is there any mention in those records, or anywhere in the area of Robert and Fanny Brown (parents of this Lizzie Barnes) or their son Oscar and wife Elizabeth? They are in Driftwood Pct, Midway Borough in 1885 State Census and no further record. Robert & Fanny probably deceased but no probate records. Roger and Lizzie moved to Seward County.

Thank you, Nedra

I know they never had any children but adopted a George Stanford of Edwardsberg, MI. My grandmother Anna Miller was one of the youngest in the Miller family while Pete was the oldest. My data on Orah is very sketchy; incomplete dates and locations. Uncle Pete's data is very complete. I am ready to share data. Everything goes.
SULLIVAN, John & Catherine

Could someone tell me if there is a library in Hitchcock Co., Nebraska that would have newspaper obituaries?
I'm looking for more information on the John and Catherine Sullivan family who lived in Palisade as early as 1895. Catherine, age 62 and her son Frank 22 were still there in Palisade Village in 1930. I did find Catherine and John Buried in Palisade cemetery, as well as some of their family members.

Catherine was a half-sister to my husband's gr. grandmother. They were separated when young after their mother died in Henry Co., IL. not too long after 1870. I would really be interested in obtaining Catherine's obituary when she died in 1948.

I would appreciate any suggestion you might have as to where I might find an obituary.

Thank you.

Elsie Harmon
Your mention of the zoo dates your request to sometime between 1935 and 1961 when the zoo was at Kugler station at the corner of Klevin Ave and Hwy 6 & 34. If your uncle lived at the very end of that street, then he lived at the corner of Klevin and Vermont, or approx. 300 South Klevin, give or take. You don't say if his dentist office was on the same street? If so, it's possible it was in the old Keller Hotel about 2 blocks north of there on the east side (there were businesses in there), though there are other possibilities.
Kathy - kscott@kdsi.net

I would appreciate any information regarding my great-uncle who was a dentist for many years in Culbertson. It would be of interest, also, to know the address of his office. All I can recall is that it was on the second floor with a stairway to the left of the store located on the ground floor. His home was on the west side at the end of a street which went south from a highway. At that highway intersection there was a small zoo operated by a service station, or whatever business was there.

Donna, If you are still working on this, I suggest you look again at the articles Brenda, our volunteer look-up person, offered to you. They are indeed pertinent to your genealogy.
