They had 7 or 8 children. James Clarence or Clarence James depending on the census, Elva Katherine Wright Huddleston and they had a few more but I am doing this off the top of my head so info is not in front of me. If anyone has information or pictures please reply.

Thanks, Janet

Hello Shirley, I would love to know more about the Zook family. My husband is descended from Eliza J. Zook who married James Perry Birchfield on 2 Jul 1885 in Tecumseh, Johnson County, Nebraska. Eliza J. was the daughter of Aaron Millard Zook who died in 1890 in Nemaha County, Nebraska and his wife, Sarah McMann or McCann, who died before he did. Aaron was in Company A, 8th Iowa cavalry during the Civil War and evidently wasn't in good health after the war. He tried to get his children adopted out before his death, but Eliza evidently never lived with the family who tried to adopt her. She is on the census below:
1885 Nebraska State Census, Nemaha County
(ED 192 or 537, sheet 9-B):
Midway Borough, Washington Precinct,
Enumeration date: 17 Jun 1885
Zook, Peter 31 M W IN
Zook, Jennie 25 F W WI
Zook, Olive 5 F W NE
ZOOK, LIZZIE 17 F W IA

Lizzie's brother Edmund's guardian, Mary M. Cook, filed a pension application which mentioned no other children. However, adoption papers dated 22 Mar 1885 state that "A. M. Zook is the father of Lizzy J. Zook, aged 11, and her mother is dead". Charles A. and Sarah J. Bingham said that they freely and voluntarily adopt Lizzie as their own child. Lizzie never took the Bingham name and lived with her uncle, Peter Zook, in 1885 prior to her marriage to James Perry Birchfield.
Do you know any more about this family? Are there any questions you have for me? You can reach me at mwpuckett@att.net
Mollee

Shirley, thanks for the contact. I would love to correspond with Ruth also. I know that Reuben F. Zook married Lucy Emma Buerstetta on 22 Dec 1896 and I have exact birth & death dates for him but not for Lucy. I assume Ruth's mother, also named Ruth, was the wife of Owen Griffith Zook, who was the son of Reuben & Lucy. I know about Walter's death but not his exact date of birth. My husband's paternal grandfather was the son of James Perry Birchfield and Eliza J(ane?)Zook. They had the following children before Eliza's death about 1897 or 1898 in Lincoln County, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma):
Sarah Ann Birchfield, b. 14 Oct 1888, Johnson County, NE
Rickie Frances Birchfield, b. 19 May 1890 in Kansas
William Birchfield, b. abt 1892 in Indian Territory
Richard Birchfield, b. 6 Oct 1893 in Indian Territory (Richard changed his name to Hal Bruce Puckett after being orphaned in about 1897 or 1898; he is my husband's grandfather; he found Sarah & Opal, but not any other siblings after being orphaned)
Opal M. Birchfield, b. 24 Sep 1897

I can send you much more information about Sarah, Opal and Hal Bruce if you want it.
Mollee

I am looking for information about the Nemaha County Poor Farm. Were there records kept? Is there a special cememtery for people who died while there? I am looking specifically for information on Anna Kitzel and John Kitzel. On the 1885 state census she is 25 and he is 3, so I am assuming John was Anna's son. They are also listed in every census that I can find as either an inmate or servant there. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, that is a common misspelling for AYNES. I have also found it as AGNES ! Andrew AYNES and his brother William had hardware stores in Nemaha and in Shubert. Their father John Aynes also had hardware and grocery stores in Shubert and Verdon. Andrew's sons Herbert and Clarence lived in Nemaha all of their lives continuing the hardware store and other businesses. If you have additional information about Andrew's wife, Margaret Zook, I would certainly like to have it. Do you know about any illness she may have suffered? In the 1900 Census she appears in Nemaha on June 5th with her family, but also in the Omaha Census for St. Joseph Hospital on June 7th. Do you happen to know where Andrew and Margaret went after 1910?
I see you've only posted two messages on the Rootsweb system (under this user name). I also looked for any posted family trees in your name to help possibly identify your Grandmother. When you post, you'll get more help when you fully identify the person you seek, and with some criteria information, such as full name (maiden) and date of birth. If the DOB is not fully known, parents, siblings or an approximation would help. This is ESPECIALLY important the more common the name.

In this case, actually looking for information on the "person" might be more of research value than a "place" that might be just "Family Lore." I've helped many that were EXACT on the EXACT place of birth, or residence of a person, only to find them somewhere else.

Your GM, have you attempted to obtain a birth record? In 1873, it is highly unlikely there would have been a birth certificate, but it does happen. Many elderly looking for Social Security Benefits, or to obtain a passport (must prove citizenship) often initiate a delayed birth certificate by use of church or other records, family statements, etc.

As far as any "Bloody" names in Nebraska, the US Geological Survey identified six, none in Nemaha County:
Bloody Creek (Streams) in Douglas and Rock Counties; Bloody Run in Gage and Sherman Counties (streams); Bloody Run School (Historical) Sherman Co, and Township of Bloody in Loup County.

Nemaha borders Missouri, the Counties of Otoe, Johnson, Pawnee and Richardson. Gage is just to the west of Johnson.

The US GS identified a Bloody Island, an Island in Osage County, Missouri. This location in Osage County is a distance from Peru, NE... But, there is a "connection" the river Missouri runs through Peru and connects with a river that runs through Bloody Island.

This leads to "conjecture" which has NO PROOF, but does allow some additional research. During the period of 1873, we are not only "possibly" looking to see why your GM was born in/near a Bloody Island. BUT, we are interested in where her parents were in 1870 (Census), where any of where siblings were born, where her mother and father may have originated. I could "GUESS" they just might have been in transit / movement using river transit. Grandmother might have been born in Bloody Island, or just a point on the river as they passed. Again, only potential research might identify enough clues on the family to help identify the "possible" location of birth.

So, I would suggest posting known particulars on your grandmother and try to set up a timeline on her family. Genealogy is like a criminal investigation, you MUST be very careful to develop "clues," not only from family lore, but documented evidence. One MUST develop SUSPECTS, but also eliminate those that could NOT be the Family member. There are so many family trees online that are WRONG and many connect to the WRONG information. One must be VERY CAREFUL about accepting undocumented resources. AND, also those "volunteer researchers" that are CONTINUOUSLY wrong, provide worthless links and false information. I have been trying for many years to clean up the available online errors, and "try" to keep those from adding to that mountain.

From the other poster:
The Nemaha Valley Museum... It is JUST A MUSEUM. Most do NOT do genealogy. http://nemahavalleymuseum.org/

The Nemaha Valley Genealogy Society. As normal the person's link does not work. Correct: http://nemahavalleymuseum.org/page3.php
They are just the people that run the museum...

Also posting from the west coast of Washington State.

Hi, William and Carrie were my grandparents. Muzzy's twin sister's name was Elizabeth, but we all called her Aunt Lizzy. William and Carrie had 6 children. They had son, Kenneth William who died as an infant. I am thankful for the dates of Grandad's time as a sheriff on the hill in Auburn. I needed those to check out information my mother, Wavie O'Harra Fuller gave us about an incident when Grandad was a sheriff. Aunt NeNe and Uncle Chet did not live their lives in Auburn. They lived all over as Uncle Chet was in the oil busiiness working for Phillips 66.

William's family came from Cork, Ireland. If you would like more information, please send me an email and I would happy to answer you. I have William and Carrie's information. I have William's obituary, and I have some family history on William's mother as well. Let me know what you are looking for.

Marsha Fuller Turner contact me at marshakfullert@hotmail.com

Have you had much success in finding the spellings of Leichleiter? There are several variations to the family name Leichleiter, Lechleitner, Lechliter and so on.
I have been told the meaning of "Leichleiter" is "Lamp Lighter". (Bavarian-German)

Source: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ne/topic/resources/andreas/nemah...
-----
"Prior to the year 1874, this town [Auburn NE] was part of the Methodist Circuit, embracing nearly the whole of Nemaha County, and enjoying services at irregular intervals. At this time a church organization was effected, mainly through the efforts of Rev. Hiram P. Birch, who was the first regular minister. In 1878, a church structure was erected at a cost of $1,500. The pastors of the society, since Rev. Mr. Birch; have been as follows: W. S. Blackburn, H. Presson, W. H. Tibbitts, J. R. Reed, I. W. Swan, the last mentioned being in charge at the time of writing. The Sunday school in connection with the church was instituted early in the history of the society, and is now in a flourishing condition under the superintendency of V. V. Morrison.

The United Baptist people organized a society in the eastern part of Douglas Precinct about 1874, erecting a small frame church building, which they practically abandoned in 1876, at which time they transferred their base of operations to Sheridan, dropping the name of United, and retaining simply the latter part of their cognomen. Since this time, the society has had two pastors, Rev. Messrs. Freeman and Keeler, the latter of whom abandoned the charge in the summer of 1880. There has been no regular preaching since, occasional services being held, however, in the Methodist building."

Almira J. (Elmira J.) Brisbin (1846 - 1927) married William M. Burns (1840 - 1911/14). I believe they were married in 1873 in Nemaha County, Nebraska. Both are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia, Cloud County, Kansas. You can find them on the Cloud County censuses starting in 1880.

I strongly suspect Jacob is buried in or around Peru, Nemaha County, Nebraska. His wife, Hannah, is in Burr Oak Cemetery, Burr Oak, Winneshiek County, Iowa.

Regards,
Les

Thanks for your reply. I discussed Barbara Bennett Wilyard Dodd with my aunt. She believes that Barbara was actually married 3 times--this may be before Samuel Wilyard. My grandmother also once mentioned some connection to a Louisville, Kentucky family with the surname pronounced "Ker-shawn" or "Kru-shun." I've wondered if this would be Kruzan or Cruzan and if it was on the Bennett side of my family tree. I don't know the names of Barbara's siblings. My aunt said that John Ebenezer Bennett's father may have been a minister.
Although it's a few years since your last edit, I'm glad to find your post. (I just happened to type "Dodd Family of Nemaha, Nebraska"). Barbara Bennett would be my great great great grandmother. She was married to Louis Samuel Wilyard before Dodd. My aunt recalled stories about "Grandma Dodd." Barbara had a son Samuel Marion Wilyard--I am his descendant. I don't have much information about John Bennett or his father Ebenezer Bennett born about 1774. I would be interested in any information. Thanks.
