Emerson Coleman and Emma Shaffer were married in Red Willow County in 1885. Their son Harvey was my maternal grandfather. I know quite a bit about both families and I am happy to share information. I am looking for photos of Emerson and Emma. I do not have any, but believe there must be some out there somewhere.
Thanks,
Robin Johnsen
Omaha

Thanks again, I have looked there with no conclusive results, also on Archive.com. The trouble is that these are only partial records, so one can never be certain.
Thank you for the findagrave.com link. I received in the mail last month from my Webb second cousin in Oregon, USA some old photos that were in the home of my Webb great grandparents in Hancock County, IL. Included in these photos was an apparent wedding photo for Hallie E Horton (1887-1979) and Charles Edward Weatherwax (1883-1950) from 1910. The photo identifies the photo studio as "Fearn McCook Neb". Also in the old photos I received was an older photo of Hallie E Horton with her siblings: William Jefferson Horton (1882-1952), John H Horton (1884-1909), Hattie (Harriet)E Horton (1887-1953). Hattie was Hallie's twin sister. I have to get out a magnifying glass to determine where this second photo was taken. I still have to scan these photos and put on my B Family Tree at Ancestry

In the 1920 Census my Great Aunt Hilda Gladys Hamilton is living with her husband Harvey in McCook City, Willow Grove Precinct. By the 1930 Census he has moved to Herndon, Rawlins, Kansas but has remarried (1927) and is living with Helene and her daughter Evelyn. I have no idea what has happened to Hilda, presumably between 1920 and 1927 she has died. Where do I look for records that could help me in finding a possible death - I am in England so a visit is not possible!

Sherrie - Thanks so much for your research on this Horton family. I had seen the 1911 article in the McCook Tribune concerning the marriage of Hattie Horton and Sanford Stevens. Thanks to this article I have been to trace this Stevens family in Colorado. I have a photo of Hattie on a pony on a post card Hattie sent her Aunt, my great grandmother, Ellen Elizabeth Lewis Webb (1853-1927) in Illinois at my B Family Tree here at Ancestry. I was not aware of the untimely death of John H Horton in 1909, so thank you for the article from the Danbury News. I have seen at findagrave the headstones of John and his parents Jacob Emmett Horton and Sarah Ann Webb at the Lebanon Cemetery, though I have just noted I have not included that info on my Family Tree genealogy program yet. I have another post card Hattie sent to her Aunt Ellie Webb which shows the Horton boys (William J and John H)in a horse and wagon getting ready to go to Colorado in 1907(?), I have to double check that year, at my B Family Tree here at Ancestry. I know the Horton boys are in the wagon but I am not positive who the people are next to the wagon. Thanks so much for the marriage info on Hallie Horton's marriage to Charles Weatherwax in 1910. I figured she had likely married, so had "lost" her after the 1910 census. Thanks also for the information on obtaining the marriage records for Hattie and Hallie. If you might like me to send you the post cards Hattie sent by direct email please let me know.

Re: Hugh J. Hines Burial Location

There is a probate record for him:
Hines, Hugh J. 550 2 212 2 177 1902 Deceased

1902 McCook Republican:
Crushed to Death-Again death in terrible form visited another home in this city last Saturday, and Hugh J. Hines was taken suddenly by the grim destroyer. The facts of the sad accident are as follows: The unfortunate young man was a brakeman, and with Conductor Rouche on freight train 148 that day at Holdrege some cars were to be shifted and Hugh uncoupled the engine from his train to do the work. As the engine moved away, the train followed and he gave a stop signal to the engineer and stepped in the opening to set the air to hold the train. The engine was stopped and when the train came against the engine he was caught in the abdomen between the bumpers. He lived about an hour and a half afterwards and was conscious until near the last. He realized his end was at hand, and told Mr. Rouche what his last wishes were in regard to many of his private affairs. The deceased was born at Science Hill, Pulaski county, Kentucky, March 15, 1877. He came here and has been in the employ of the railroad company, in the train service, for the past three years. On Thanksgiving day, November 28, 1901, he was married to Miss Clementine Ploussard, besides whom he leaves a father, Shelton Hines of Science Hill, Kentucky, four brothers, T.J. of Holstein, W.C. of Norfolk, E.E. of Lincoln, Nebraska and H.M. who lives with his father, two sisters, Mrs. Loudora Rabbitt of Kenesaw, Nebraska and Mrs. Laura Dick of Whitesboro, Texas, all of whom were present at the funeral except Mrs. Dick and a host of friends to mourn his loss. He was a member of the following orders: K of P under whose auspices the funeral arrangements were made, The Odd Fellows, Workmen and B of R T and carried insurance to the mount of $3,500. The funeral services were held in St. Patrick’s Catholic church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Fr. Sebastian Brennan officiating. The members attending filled the edifice to overflowing and many being unable to gain admittance. The floral pieces and bouquet were numerous and elegant and the grave was beautifully decorated and presented the appearance of a bower of evergreen and flowers. After the ritual service of the Catholic church the K of P lodge paid its last respects to the dead and was joined in the service by the other orders. The bereaved widow and family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community. Friday 24 October 1902

I see no record of his burial but with the above from the Republican newspaper one would think he is buried in St. Patrick's Calvary Cemetery here in McCook, Nebraska. I know the Ploussard family is buried there.

Don't know if the probate record would indicate more or not. It could be obtained for a free from the gen society in McCook, email: swngs@hotmail.com

Hope this helps you, Sherrie Dack, SWNGS Researcher

1901 McCook Republican (makes a reference to Hattie)
John Horton Drowned. Monday at 2:30 in the Presbyterian church, Rev. Gushtu of Wilsonville officiating was held the funeral of John Horton son of Mr. And Mrs. J.E. Horton. The occasion was one of unusual sadness as his death came as a bolt from a clear sky. He together with his brother W.J. and sister Hattie had claims near Akron, Colo. And after finishing his seasons work John had gone to work on a ranch near Greeley. Last Friday afternoon, after he and others had completed their day’s work it was proposed to go bathing, in a deep place in the creek near where they were working. John made a plunge from the spring board and never came up. The boys who were with him finally succeeded in diving and regaining the body. They notified his brother W.J. who hurried to the place and wired the family here. The remains, accompanied by the brother and sister, and a Mr. McTaggart, a friend of the deceased, arrived on Monday’s passenger and were met by the citizens and friends and conveyed to the church where the funeral was held later. Lebanon Cor. Danbury News. Friday 23 July 1909

1911 McCook Tribune:
Married-At the Methodist parsonage on Wednesday evening at 8 o’clock, Mr. Sanford R. Stevens and Miss Hattie E. Horton, both of Akron, Colorado, were united in marriage, L.E. Lewis, pastor of the M.E. church, officiating. They left on No. 14 for Bartley, where they will visit with the parents of Mrs. Stevens, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Horton, after which they will return to their home in Akron. Thursday 5 October 1911

Following marriages recorded in Red Willow County, NE:

Horton, Hattie E. to Stevens, Sanford R. 04 Oct 1911 Volume 6 Record 6.
Horton, Hallie E. to Weatherwax, Charles E. 11 May 1910 Volume 5 Record 475.

Charles & Hallie Weatherwax are buried in the Lebanon Cemetery, Lebanon, Red Willow, Nebraska. Charles died 1950 Hallie in 1979. Also most of the Hortons are buried in Lebanon Cemetery.

Use www.findagrave.com to the Lebanon Cemetery where stone pictures are there for all of these folks.

Copies of the marriage records could be obtained for a fee from the local gen society in McCook, Nebraska.
Hallie E or A? Horton (Aug 1887-?) of Lebanon, Red Willow, Nebraska

Looking for help in trying to find out more information concerning Hallie E (A) Horton, who was born in Nebraska in Aug 1887. Hallie is in the 1900 and 1910 census in Lebanon with her parents Jacob Emmett Horton (1855-1932)and Sarah Ann Webb (1854-1916). Also with Hallie and her parents in the 1900 census in Lebanon is her twin sister Hattie (Harriet) E Horton (Aug 1887-Apr 1953) and her older brothers William Jefferson Horton (1882-1952) and John H (Hampton?) Horton (1884-1909). I have been able to track down what happened to Hallie's siblings but have been at a loss to find out more about Hallie. Maybe she married or perhaps died young? Appreciate any information on Hallie Horton. I have two great postcards from Hattie Horton by the way, one from Lebanon in 1908 and one from Bartley in 1909. The 1908 post card has a photo of Hattie's brothers in a covered wagon, apparently on their way to Colorado. The 1909 post card has a photo of Hattie on her pony.

"OUR BURGENLAND ROOTS" RESEARCH GROUP
If you have ancestors from Austria-Hungary, particularly the Burgenland area, who settled in northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska, you might like to join our social network called Our Burgenland Roots. This fun and recently formed group is committed to compiling and sharing genealogical and related records (e.g., photos, family histories and other documents) to the mutual benefit of its members.

If you respond with your name and an e-mail address to maryerushing@yahoo.com, we’ll send to you an invitation to join or go to www.myfamily.com/group/ourburgenlandroots and ask to join.

Ed. note: At my request, Mary shared additional information about the group. It formed initially as an email exchange but, wanting a better way to do this, a member set them up in January as a private family group on MyFamily.com, a sister site to Ancestry.com. There are currently (in mid-February) 32 members who have posted 7 family trees, 16 photo albums (holding 276 photos) and 12 data files, and who also have 58 discussion threads underway. For BB members who have family from this area, it appears to be a great group to join!

GREGORY, Anna M.
GREGORY, James A.
GREGORY, Martha E.
are shown as landowners, and I found them on the precinct map just adjacent to Danbury.

My relatives Absalom Gregory, his mother Delilah Jane Summers Gregory, his sister Ada Gregory Bagby, Ada's husband Andrew Bagby, and their children Raleigh and Laura Bagby, are all in Gerver, Red Willow in the 1910 census. They came from Randolph Co., Missouri, but Absalom's father (also Absalom) was born in Kentucky. Absalom later moved to McCook, and the Bagbys moved to Danbury.

I do not know of any relation between my Gregorys and the Gregory landowners in the 1905 census but it is very intriguing. Can anyone tell me if there is a relation? Were the landowner Gregorys residents of Gerver, or just outside landowners who later sold to settlers?
