Does anyone have access to cemetery or death records in Saline County? I am looking for the deaths of James P. and Sarah Shaw. I don't even know if they died in Saline County. Last I know they show up on the 1910 Census in South Fork Pct. He was 82 years of age she was 68. They are not listed on 1920 census. Since he was 82 think he may have died in Saline County. His brother who died in 1885 is buried in Jefferson County. Would like an obit for James but since I don't have a death date this is probably impossible. This is a long shot but if anyone has any resources or ideas please let me know.
Thank you.

I'm looking for a death for Robert Warren Diehl who was born 30 January 1882 in Nebraska (Saline Co. I think) and died on 4 March 1954 in Lincoln I think. He's buried in Wyuka Cemetery. His parents were William Anthony Diehl and Anna E. Laramore. He was married to Rosemary Parker, but I haven't been able to find her. Not sure if they divorced or not. Hoping that the death record sheds some light on that. I did find her in the 1930 census living with her parents so I'm not sure if she was there taking care of her aged parents (in their 80s) at that time or she left her husband with two daughters. I don't know what the truth is. Thanks for your help!!
Ginger Walls
Red Wing, MN

I did not find an obit for Charles Johns but these articles concerning his death.

Crete Vidette herald March 28, 1907
Charley Johns at Friend took poison last Thursday and died before medical aid could reach him. He was the husband of Mrs. McCormick, formerly of this city, they being married during the winter. Johns was an old soldier and a member of Friend's G.A.R. post.

Friend Sentinel March 28, 1907
At the inquest held on the remains of Charles Johns last Thursday, the jury found the following facts: That he came to his death by his own hands; that it was premeditated; for the past two weeks he had said he was going to make way with himself; he had made all preparations for his taking off; he had taken a bath, had his hair cut and had been shaved the day before. He took the two ounces of laudanum with enough whiskey to fill a half p;int bottle, which done the work. Charley was his own worst enemy and was a free-hearted and good natured man, always willing to lend a helping hand to all who called on him.

Hope this will help.

Here is the obit for R. DeWald. The family is curious about you and your query for the obit.Let me know and I will pass on the information.

Ralph DeWald, son of Ralph O. and Fern A. DeWald was born July 21, 1925 on a farm near Powell, Nebraska and passed away of a heart attack at his home in Tobias on January 2, 1967.
Ralph attended rural grade school near Powell and Alexandria. He then graduated from high school at Alexandria in May of 1942. Soon after graduation he entered Milford Trade school under the U.S. Government Civil Service, specializing in radio. A year later in 1942, Ralph was drafted into military service being assigned to Signal Corps at Ft. Sill Oklahoma. In the spring of 1944 after a short furlough at home he was sent overseas first in England then came up through Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. After the end of the war in 1945 he became a member of the Occupation Forces in Germany and later was discharged from the service in Germany, staying there as a civilian.
On April 13, he was united in marriage to Liselotte Bender and one daughter, Doris was born before the family returned to the United States in 1948. Soon after returning he began working in the bank at Alexandria, later being transferred to the bank at Daykin, where he was assistant cashier at the time of his death.
He made his home in Tobias for the past ten years where he took active interest in Church and community affairs. His greatest pride was to aid anyone who needed help or advice. Ralph was one who would rather give than receive. He was happiest when he helped others attain their goal, especially, the 4-H club members. He was a lover of sports and a great Tobias booster, always encouraging the players. He coached two seasons of Little League Baseball, enjoying it immensely. He had a full fruitful life, gaining the respect and esteem of his many associates.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church of Tobias, Knights of Columbus of Hebron, Tobias American Legion Post 311, former member of Tobias Volunteer Fire Dept. and also served several terms as a member of the Tobias Village board. Recently he was appointed as Democratic Chairman of Olive Precinct.
The body was brought to the Tobias Legion Hall where it lay instate from Wednesday afternoon, January 4 to Thursday forenoon, January 5. Rosary services were conducted on Wednesday evening by Father J. P. Henhan. Funeral services began at 10:30 Thursday, January 5 when the body was brought to St. Joseph's Catholic church for the funeral mass. Several hymns were rendered by the church choir. Burial was in the Alexandria Catholic cemetery. Graveside services were conducted by Father Anthony Turek of Alexandria.
The Tobias Legion Post Members paid their last respects with a full military grave side service to their comrade. Taps were sounded by Richard Endorf of Tobias. The United States Flag was presented to his wife, Liselotte, by the Legion Post Chaplin, Leonard Maas.
The church ushers were Louis Endorf of Tobias, and Fieldon Hawks of Bruning. Pallbearers were W.J. Kottas, El
Roy Bartels, Willard Bartels, Leonard Mass, Adolph Dlouhy and Francis Brakhage all of Tobias.
He is survived by his wife Liselotte (Jeanne), children, Mrs. Gary Mitchell and Carol of Lincoln, Dennis, Linda, Gary, Mary Lou, Karlene, Patsy, Lore, Joe and Peter at home, and also his parents Mr. and Mrs. R.O.
I think this might be Mary's family. I think her father's name was Joseph. Mary was born in Wisconsin (I think). I know that she was not born in Nebraska. My Mary and Anton were married in 1893 and had two daughters born in Nebraska, Hazel and Clara. A third daughter was born in Canada. They left Nebraska around 1906 (maybe as early as 1903). Anton Bittner is my greatgrandmother's brother. I know that he came back to visit his sister at least one time. Anton and Mary moved to Alberta, Canada and lived first in the Red Deer area and then in Edmonton. I found an obituary of Mary's brother and it listed her as living in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Anita

I have not found a Bittner in my work. The Mary you mentioned may have been a daughter of one of the other Kovariks that came to the Saline County area. Here is a littlepiece of information I have on them:
In the book Czechs in Nebraska, Thomas and Joseph Kovarik are identified as pioneers in the Saline County area. History records an influx of immigants from Bohemia to Nebraska beginning in 1865 and the Kovarik brothers are credited with initiating a settlement south of Crete around this same time. Thomas was born in Bohemia in 1844, the youngest of nine children of Jacob and Marketa (Finova) Kovarik. Following the urging of their older brother and son, the family sold all of their possessions and left for America. After a brief stay in New York, the family moved west to Manitowoc, Wisconsin where there was already and established Bohemian community. Receiving word for friends about the beauty and endless opportunity of the Nebraska wilderness Thomas travelled to the area around Big Blue River. Brothers Joseph and Matthew came too. Records indicate the brothers were successful in acquiring land and possessions. They ran the most prosperous saloon and dancehouse in the territory until it burned to the ground in 1879.

Hi, I wrote asking about a list of burials in the Big Blue cemetery and you responded, thank you. I tried your suggestion and didn't come up with anything but I will keep searching. I did come across something else. I thought I had in mind where the Big Blue Cemetery was by your description but I was thinking of another cemetery. There is a cemetery just south of Crete a short distance that has many names that appear to be Czech and Bohemian. It is called Blue Valley Cemetery.

The Big Blue Cemetery is located near Wilber, Ne which is just 10 miles south of Crete.

You mentioned the name Kovarik in your message. One of my Bittner ancestors married a Kovarik. I have been trying to find where my Bittners were from in Bohemia. Have you ever come across that name in your familysearchings? An Anton Bittner married a Mary Kovarik in Wilber in the 1890's and soon after 1900 they moved to Canada.

Anita

Do you know who I could contact to find a list of burial in the Big Blue Cemetery? I see that someone posted that this is also called the Bohemian Cemetery. I am trying to find the burial place of a great uncle, he died before 1900 as a young child. He is not buried where his parents are buried.
I walked this cemetery and did not see any marker with his name. But it could very well be an unmarked grave or the marker could have fallen over and become buried beneath the surface.

Anita

Marcy,

Yes I'd like those pictures. Mollie was my great grandfather's 1st cousin, and her husband Lewis/Louis Psikal was a witness on my great grandfather's marriage license from his wedding in Kildare, OK.

I don't have any photos of that family (that I know of). At this link you can find some photos of Charles & Anna's son-in-law Albert Vap & his siblings & folks, etc.
http://picasaweb.google.com/dolniloucky/Genealogy1920sVapPic...

This link is of some unidentified photos found by Colleen Higgins in Montana. She's a great-grandchild of Frank Malon and these photos were sent to her grandmother from the families in Oklahoma. It's possible some of these folks might be on the Mollie Malon Psikal branch, but we don't know for sure. One of them I marked as Mollie's brother Frank Malon, as someone else identified it for me.
http://picasaweb.google.com/dolniloucky/GenealogyUnknownHori...

When you email me, I'll have your email address and will send you some info I have on her children.

-Kevin
kevin@vap.org

Mollie & Anna Malon were sisters and they married Psikal brothers.

Mollie & Anna came sailed from Hamburg on the ship Polynesia and arrived in New York in March 1886, destined for Fairfield, Nebraska.

The Psikal brothers were sons of John Psikal and Filipina Herbek of Saline Co Nebraska. The Malon sisters were daughters of Bedrich (Fred) Malon & Vincencia Vap. The Malon parents remained in Moravia, but the sisters had relatives in the Deweese Nebraska area - uncle Ignac Vap & family and aunt Frances (Mrs. Joseph) Borek & family.

In 1889, two of Mollie & Anna's brothers (Frank & Alois Malon) came to Nebraska. About 1894, many of these related families moved to Kay Co Oklahoma to obtain the newly opened Cherokee lands. Apparently Charles & Anna Psikal remained in Nebraska, as did her uncle Ignac Vap & family. But the rest of the Psikals, the Boreks, the rest of the Malons, and many of the Vaps from Rawlins Co Kansas (another uncle to the Malon sisters) all moved to Oklahoma.

That list of children for Louis Psikal & Mollie Malon matches what I have, but I don't have a complete list for their son Joe Psikal & Edith Connelly.

Email me for more information if you'd like.

-Kevin Vap

I have been wondering about the Psikal Family myself. Please let me know if any of this sounds familiar. I have a Mollie Malone(could be Malon, though) married a Lewis Joseph Psikal. They had the following children;Joe, Mary, bernice, minnie, alice, agnus, elmer, george, & bill. Joe married an Edith Malone(Could also be Malon?) their kids were; raymon, louise, naomie, dorothy, gabriel, & vida lee.
Thanks,
Marcy Franks

Here is a list I received long ago (1984?) from Jeanne Vap Imler, granddaughter of Albert Vap & Bessie Psikal.

1) Emma, born 14-Nov-1887, married Henry Kvasnica (although I think your tree on ancestry.com is more correct with his name as Emanuel Kvasnica & they had a son named Henry).
2) Mary, born 6-Sep-1889, married Edward Andelt.
3) Emil, born 4-Feb-1891, never married
4) Lula Alice, born 11-May-1892, married Lewis Vap
5) Joseph, born 11-Mar-1898, married Augusta Zemphe
6) Henry, born 17-Oct-1899, married Julia Kasparek
7) William, born 12-Jan-1902, married Marie Divoky
8) Bertha "Bessie", born 13-Dec-1903, married Albert Enos Vap (nephew of aforementioned Lewis Vap).

She gave Charles Psikal's parents as John Psikal & Filipina Hrbek. She gave Anna Malon's parents as Fred Malon & Vincentia Vap (Vincentia could be an aunt to Lewis Vap, but I'm not entirely sure).

Thanks for your response.
I'm guessing, because of Joe's age, that his marriage to Pearl could be a 2nd marriage...
At first, I thought the name was a misspelling for "PASCHAL", but the surname PSIKAL was returned in searches! But I will try the other spelling, too...
Anyway, I realized that there was no Board devoted to PSIKAL, so I requested the creation of one... which was granted. You can find it at...

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.psikal/mb.ashx

I don't see a fit for that Joe Psikal in anything I have.

Here's what I have:

John & Philipina Psikal (came to US in ~1877) had these children:
1) John Jr, 1855-1895
2) Joseph, 1857-1881
3) Frank, 1860-1909
4) Louis, 1862-1902
5) Charles, 1866-1936
6) Bert, 1871-1962 (changed his surname to Palky)

The John & Philipina family, with sons John Jr, Frank & Louis, moved to Oklahoma in about 1895. Sons Charles & Bert stayed in Nebraska.

The Joe Psikal you saw in Nebraska (son of Charles) remained in Nebraska as far as I know. He married Augusta Zumphe in 1924 in Saline Co, NE and died in 1952 and was buried in Saline Co.

Louis also had a son Joseph, born in 1893. He married Edith Connelly in 1915 in Kay Co, OK and remained in Kay Co.

Bert didn't have a Joseph that I know of.

The other sons (John Jr, Joseph, Frank) didn't have any children that I know of.

Does Joe PSIKAL fit in with any of your PSIKAL families?
Pearl HILLIS [dt of James Olis HILLIS & Bulla [Beulah] May SUTHERLAND]married Joe PSIKAL 29 Oct 1934 in Atoka Co,Oklahoma. Joe was age 35 at the time, so was born about 1899. Does anyone know anything about him, or his family? Or where they went to? I did not find a PSIKAL family there in 1930 census, and the only Joe PSIKAL I've found [so far] that is that age, was born in Nebraska...Saline County area. Is this him? Did he come to Atoka Co.,OK.? Or is this a different Joe PSIKAL? I would like to find out about this family, and any descendents they may have! Pearl was my father's cousin.
We had water damage and my census records for 1880 were damaged. On the 1880 census of Saunders, Butler, or Colfax counties, she was listed as living with a family as their housekeeper I believe. She married Joseph Zeleny in 1885, and they had a son 3-10-1886, she died in 1886 or 1887.

I think it is quite possible that Frank and John Havlik were brothers of Anna Havlik. I also recall the surname Koutnik as possibly being the family that Anna Havlik lived with on the 1880 Census, Linwood, Butler (possibly?)

The following was located at the Butler Co. website:
Havlik, Frank. Wf. Anna; ch. Leonard. P.O. Linwood, R. 1. R. 77.88 ac., sec. 4, and R. 80 ac., sec. 33 in Platte Prec. (7.) Owner, John Hurni.

Havlik, John. Wf. Rozi. P. O. Linwood, R. 1. O. 114 ac., sec. 3. (8.) Owner, Rozi Havlik.

I am seeking relatives of Joseph Havlik family that migrated from Bohemia to Wisconsin, to southeastern Nebraska in the 1860's. He first settled in Saline County, NE. Joseph Havlik died, and his son is believed to have inherited his land. Joseph Havlik had at least one daughter, named Anna Havlik who married Joseph Zeleny. IF you have ANY INFORMATION on said family, please respond. *Are there any other name variations of Havlik that you are aware of? Would Havlovic possibly the same family?
