Have you done much looking on Ancestry.com? From what I have seen, I think your Darius Reynolds lived in Ellisburg, Jefferson County, New York with the Post Office of Pierrepont Manor. Your Darius Reynolds was a veteran of the Civil War and I have found from the “1890 Veterans Schedules” Darius stated he was in Company H, 10th Heavy Artillery unit. There is a Darius Reynolds in that company and he enlisted at Ellisburg. I found a Darius (indexed as Darin but looks like Darius to me) and Hannah Reynolds in the 1860 census for Ellisburg. Two of their son’s names are the same as some Reynolds listed in the Nebraska 1880 census in the same precinct as Darius and Hannah. Also on Ancestry, I found a Darius Reynolds in the book “Families of Ancient New Haven, Vol IV”. It looks like this is additions and corrections to earlier volumes. I grew up in rural Sherman County and while I was doing this research, I remembered there was a Clark Reynolds that lived in Loup City. It would be great if that were your Darius and Hannah in Ellisburg. That would give you a starting point in New York.

I’m not related to any member of this family.

This is your problem -

Facts you should know about the early census records –

All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++
Hi, I need to find a 1900 death certificate, but the Nebraska State Division of Health only started keeping them in 1904.

I've looked at a couple Sherman Co. genealogy websites, but they don't tell me where to look. Do I contact the county courthouse, or would someone else have pre-1904 death certificates?

Just in case, the person I'm looking for is:

Darius Reynolds
b. 1823 in New York State
d. Dec 26, 1900 in Sherman Co, buried at Sunny Slope cemetery in Loup City.
That would be great!

Anton and Anna (or Emma) Lentz (Lenz)
Farming
We think that Anna died with last child in 1893, but maybe as late as 1895
We're not sure when they arrived in Litchfield, but probably about 1890. Previously had been in Clay county with many other Germans from Russia.

In 1895, Anton and children were in Fremont Nebraska.

We haven't found any record of Anna's death or burial. Family story said she died with childbirth Jan 1893.

I haven't found any records, newspapers, etc.

Anna's maiden name was Schnell. I don't know if there were any Schnells also around Litchfield.

This is a tough one as they were only in Litchfield a few years.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Soni from Colorado

Phyllis - It's been a long time since your post, but here goes.

My husband's grandmother was born in Litchfield in 1893.

Her name: Minnie Lentz
Father's name: Antone Lentz
Mother's name: Anna Lentz (maiden name Schnell)

Anna died in about 1893 - 1895 but I can find no record of her death, or even that the family lived there.

They were Germans from Russia and originally lived in Clay county. Probably only spoke German and were small farmers. Other children also.

Thanks,

Soni Davison, Colorado

Re: Litchfield, NE Beard/Baird family

Would you have any info on Hugh and Elzina Walker Baird/Beard. they went from Pike Co.,In. to somewhere near Litchfield in the late 1800's. Know that they were there in about 1888 as they had their youngest daughter there. Lucy June Beard. They went by covered wagon pulled by a team of horses. Had 5 children at that time. Hugh made a raft to get the horses, their milk cows, chickens, belongings and family across the Mississippi river. The youngest at that time was a little boy who walked all of the way. When they got there a bad blizzard was going on. No place to get in out of it. So grandmother said that they all prayed and they found a cave. It was so cold that they made 2 rooms of the cave, with quiltd, and brought the "stock" in the front part so they would not freeze and the family stayed in the rear. When spring came g grandpa Hugh built a soddy. Grandma said it was cool in the summer and warm in the winter, but the roof did leak a bit when it rained. They swept the dirt floor. Grandpa Hugh was supposed to have helped build some of the early buildings in Litchfield. I do have a photo of the family taken after Lucy was born. She looks to be maybe 9 mos to a year old. It was proffesionaly made, one of those picture post cards that they had then. they came back to Pike County because there was a very bad drought thre and people were starving. Does anyone have anything on this family. I figure that either another of the family or friends went there first,as that seems to be the way it was often done. Can anyone go to the library or historical plaes and find anything. I do know that he wa listed in a book about the business people there in about 1890,listed as a farmer. Sometimes they spelled the name Baird, sometimes Beard. Children were Susan Catherine"Katy" ,Sarah Luvina "Viney",Martha Abigbail "Mattie",Cleveland,Maude, and baby Lucy June Beard/Baird. I would love to know the trail that they took and try to go it today. Would also like to know more of what they did in their everyday live. My grandma told me alot of it,but it was mostly about the trip there. thanks for any help,Judy email me marmsie929@aol.com

dna samples/test from male decendants of the Aquilla Chapman who died in the loop city/scott township of Sherman Co.Neb.in 1883.he had at least one son who was still alive in Sherman Co.in the 1910 census, his name was W.H.Chapman who was thought to be William Harvey Chapman born Nov.1843 in Indiana.Aquilla Chapman was born in Kentucky about 1800,William Harvey Chapman had sons Robert Chapman b.sept.1885 and Harvey b.1897.The male decendant has to have the last name Chapman and be a direct line to Aquilla. These test can be very helpfull in establishing an earlier tie into other Chapman families in Illinois,Missouri,Indiana,Kentucky,North Carolina and finally to Baltimore Co.Maryland.If you know anyone from that area that fits and would be willing to share his dna with us please let me know.E-mail me at <a href="http://www.antiochspeedway@netzero.net" target="_blank">www.antiochspeedway@netzero.net thank you James F.Smith

In 1993, I visited the graves of my great-grandmother, Elcy Ann Hunter Portlock and her daughter, Malinda Portlock in the old Weaver Cemetery in Sherman or Custer County, NE. I understand the name of the cemetery has since changed to Table Top Cemetery. It is located on the left side of Hwy. 2 going NW from Litchfield to Mason City (parallel with the railroad track). At the time we were there, there was no access road up the hill to the cemetery and was very hidden from the road. But with the help of two very nice guys connected with the Whitehead family in Mason City, they showed me where the cemetery was, got me to the top of the hill, inside the cemetery and then helped me find the two grave markers hidden below the high weeds. Would anyone know the exact county this cemetery is actually in? Thanks...ettawithers@yahoo.com
I don't have the "Times" for 1932 because I got the Ashton "Herald" instead... I checked the Herald and didn't find an obit for Noah HAND. But I did find his wife's obit:
Sherman County Times, Friday, 7 Aug 1936:
Hazard News
Mrs. Noah Hand passed away at her home on Hazard Saturday morning. Mrs. Hand had lived in this community for many years. Her health has not been good for several years, and Thursday she suffered a stroke from which she never rallied. Services were held at the M.E. church and burial was in the Hazard cemetery.

If you'd like a copy, send me your address.
Pam,

For a possible lower cost alternative, try the church & cemetery where they lived. If Loup City & Catholic, try St. Josaphat's. Call and ask if they have a death record. Have you checked all the online Sherman county cemeteries? Have you asked at the County Clerk's office for a will?

Also, if you pay for the death certificates for the two men, get those obits before paying for the women's death certificates. There is a possibility that the obits may include more info.

Good luck,
Laura
Thanks so much for the kind offers . As of now all I have is their ages in 1930 census. I am thinking I will have to pay for a search at the Vital records office in Lincoln for death certificates for both George Wurtz and August Anderson. Also may have pay for death records of wives for both just to get death date. Once I get those I may be able to narrow down the search fro obits for both .
Pam

There is a Historical Society but I don't know about films... I have films of the Sherman County Times and Times-Independent and Ashton Herald for most years 1906-1949. If you have a name and estimate for death date, I can look up obits as I have time. I can even try without a specific date if you have a good guess.
Laura

Since the Historical Society is closed and the newspapers are unavailable I was wondering if there is a place in Sherman County that has copies of the newspapers so I can search them for obits for August S Wagner or his wife Clara Wurtz Anderson after 1930 .
Thanks
Pam Wagner

Are your Austin T. Butts and Lewis Butts brothers and sons of Joel Butts and Mary Churchill?

I am trying to determine if Joel Butts is a brother or cousin of my 3rd ggrandmother, Delilah Butts. She married (2nd) Stephen Colvin. Their son, Molby, is my 2nd ggrandfather. They went from Ohio to McHenry County, IL (1852-1855) and then to Sauk County, WI.
