I'll be going back down to the courthouse towards the end of this week or beginning of next week. Spending time at the library now finding land on old plat maps. Unfortunately the oldest they have there for York county is 1923. I have found Winfield's land, Fannies land, and I believe Fredrick's land. I haven't found Henry's land at the library because they don't have a map that old there. But the courthouse does. So.... I'll check back in next week. I do have a lot of their obituaries if you are interested I could email.Other than that I have headstone pictures from the local cemetery. I only started researching them a couple of weeks ago. But we live in the same town they did. York, Nebraska, so when I get my ducks in a row I will find out more. Any suggestions are welcome. I am a rookie at this ancestry stuff. :)

Hello! I know these post are old, but...Henry Harrison Thomas was my 3rd great grandfather. I live in York, Nebraska and have a lot of his families obituaries from the local papers, and have pictures of a lot of their headstones from the local cemetery. I'm also going to check out the location of their land sometime next week at the courthouse. As of present all I know is that it was 5 miles southeast of my town. I have only been working on this family line for a couple of weeks but will share what I have with anyone interested.

My husband is also a great-grandson of Charles Sandall. There are several pictures of Charles and Fredricka attached to our Sandall tree on ancestry. The church and cemetery land was given by Swan Swanson and his wife Hannah, but it is close to what was Charles' land, some of which is now ours. I need to look for a picture of the church; not sure where it is, but I know there is one.

Peter and Kathryn are buried in a small cemetery a little south of Henderson (York County). The cemetery has had many names as the churches associated with it have changed. It is currently the cemetery for the Faith Evangelical Bible Church (FEBC)in Henderson.

My records show Peter was born December 21, 1887, and died June 5, 1952. Kathryn was born April 09, 1896, and died in June 1983. I have not been able to confirm if the birth dates are based on the Russian calendar, or not. So they may be twelve days off.

David died in York at the IOOF State Home (Independent Order of Odd Fellows). One of the benefits of membership in that organization, allowed for men and women (or orphans/half-orphans) to reside there. David moved to the home in November of 1911, when he was 82. So while David did die at York, he lived there only a couple of years.

His obituary says that his body was sent to Lincoln, Nebraska (Lancaster County), and from there was taken to Davenport, Iowa and was cremated. His obituary includes the many cities he lived in, but it doesn't include Davenport. It makes me wonder if that where the crematory was located, and not the final destination of his remains.

The IOOF annual report for 1914 said that he died at the home (IOOF home), and his ashes are buried in Lincoln, Nebraska.

I hope this helps...or at least reduces your search to two cities.

I doubt that there are any books available at this late date. The title of the book is "GRESHAM, NEBRASKA 1887 - 1987. There is no reference to the publisher nor an ISBN number listed in the book. The closest I can find about the publisher is a picture of the Centennial History Book Committee which includes one person listed as a Walsworth Representative. I can only assume the book was published in 1987 or later.

I purchased my book when in Gresham in the late 1990's. I happened to go into the Gresham State bank to see how I could contact a person I was looking for. It so happened that the person's wife was working there. In our conversation, the book was mentioned and she had a copy in the bank. I bought it. I do not know if they had any more or not.

In searching for the bank's address, I now learn the bank has been sold/merged with the York State Bank & Trust Co. The physical address at the bank is: 405 Elm Street, Gresham, NE 68367. Telephone number is: (402) 735-7277 You might call or write to them to see if the book is still available there, or if they could tell you who may have one available.

Good Luck.
Ron

There are no family histories listed for the Erks families in the centennial book. I believe that only the families still living in the area submitted family histories for the book.

I have quickly scanned the book and found no record of Erks in the index. However, I did find a total of 17 Erks interred in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, 3 miles East and 4 miles South of Gresham.

I also found a Eugene Erks listed in a 1939-40 1st & 2nd grade school photo as well as in a 7th & 8th grade photo in 1946. No Erks was listed in any year of graduation from 1892 through 1983.

My wife attended school in Gresham with Eugene and his younger brother Milton. Her family moved to Grand Island and she says she also knew Milton there. She says Milton died in Grand Island. The Erks family moving to G.I. would explain why Eugene and Milton did not graduate from Gresham.

The only other Erks name I found was Mathilda "Erks" Wiemer of Waco, NE 68367 listed as a Century Club member in the Centennial Activites section.

I hope this helps.
Ron

I have an index of the names from the 1889 atlas on line at this time. At sometime I want to modify it to show the township name instead of a page number, but it will probably be next year when I have a bit more time to make changes like that.

I have indexed the 1911 atlas too, and hopefully that will be online next year also. Next will be a 1915-ish and 1924 atlas. ;-)
