You can have a search done at the Nebraska State Vital Records. If the certificate is not found, the search fee is NON-Refundable -- see their website for costs and requirements for this service.

Only records that are 50 years old or older may be asked for family history as stated in the Rules and Regulations Chapter 3 para 3-004.06 Genealogical Use.

Birth and death records start in 1904.

Marriage and divorce records start in 1909.

Some counties kept records in ledgers before 1904 & 1909.

From 1904 to 1911 births were usually filed only under the father’s name and didn't list the name of the child. This was only to register the birth not to make a birth certificate.

Certificates for births started in 1912. Beginning in 1941, a person born in Nebraska before 1905 could ask to have their birth record put on file (delayed birth).

In 1985, birth and death certificates were sent to NE Vital Records in Lincoln, NE. (except Lancaster & Douglas Counties).

For marriages before 1909, contact the county where the marriage license was filed.

For divorces before 1909, check with the Clerk of the District Court in the county where the divorce was granted.

Before October 1, 1985, all delayed birth records granted by the courts were filed with NE Vital Records in Lincoln, NE.

If no record is found, a "no record" is sent, and the search fee is kept.

Vital Records does not keep census records. Check with the U.S.Census Bureau.

Contact:
E-mail: Vitalrecords@dhhs.ne.gov
Phone: (402) 471-2871

Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services
Division of Public Health
Vital Records
P.O. Box 95065
Lincoln, NE 68509-5065

http://www.hhs.state.ne.us/VitalRecords/

BIRTH AND DEATH RECORDS for Nebraska were not consistently kept prior to 1904 at either the state or county level.

The Historical Society does not have official records of births and deaths on file, with the exception of an OMAHA BIRTH REGISTRY, 1869-1907; an OMAHA DEATH REGISTRY, 1873-1915; and a few vital records for early eastern Nebraska, which can be found in THE NEBRASKA AND MIDWEST GENEALOGICAL RECORD.
http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ne/topic/resources/OLLibrary/Jou...

Some earlier birth and death records exist for Lincoln and Omaha and have been filed with the Bureau of Vital Statistics. For available records of births and deaths after 1904, contact the Bureau of Vital Statistics, 301 Centennial Mall South, Lincoln, Nebraska 68509-5007 to obtain prices and procedures.

I'm helping someone get started with genealogy and found a 1900 census record that has her grandfather Walter McGowan being born in Nebraska in Oct 1885 or 86 hard to read. Are the any birth indexes available for this time period in Nebraska. Thank you Jim Nelson

The original Gooch Mill was established in Lincoln in 1908. Over the years a large complex of buildings and elevators grew in southwest Lincoln including Gooch Foods, a distributor of consumer food products, Gooch Feed Mill, a manufacturer of livestock and poultry feeds, and Gooch Milling and Elevator Company, which operates a flour mill, corn mill, and terminal grain elevators. All of these operations were acquired by Archer Daniels Midland in 1970.
http://www.nebraskahistory.org/sites/mnh/neb-made/milling.ht...

Wright-Leet Grain Company was no where near Lancaster County --it was in Thayer County.

Wright-Leet Grain Company and Gooch Milling Co

Hi all,

I have twin sisters in my family that appear to have done everything the same most of their life. So much so that they were both Stenographers for a grain company in the 1910 and 1920 census.

One's obituary states that she retired from Wright-Leet Grain Company after 25 years. That was printed in 1959.

The other's obituary states that she worked for Gooch Milling Co. That was printed in 1965.

For what little I can find Gooch seems to have become part of the conglomerate that is Con-Agra. However I can't find anything on Wright-Leet Grain Company.

My hunch is that perhaps they both worked for Wright-Leet Grain Company and that the company was perhaps bought out between 1959 and 1965. When the second sister died perhaps they used the new name? Does this sound plausible?

Thank You so much!

Brad Hess
Jackson, Michigan
