It is a large picture (about 6 inches X 8 inches?), probably a copy of a cabinet photo. It reads "Beals photographer, No. 100 South C Street, Virginia City, Nevada". On the back in handwriting is "Grandma Whitcomb". The lady is older, probably in her sixties, with gray hair in a bun. There are no other identifying marks (I'm going by memory, I can't seem to locate it today). Minerva Whitcomb is listed in the 1880 census with her son, Ellwood (I believe he died in a mining accident soon after). Her daughter Alice married in 1876, Charles Batchelor (in the western states marriage index, he is listed as C.A. Vsatchelor, an obvious transcription error). Alice died in 1877. I do not know where Minerva is after 1880. I would love to find out if she is one and the same with "Grandma Whitcomb" and what her connection is to MY Batchelder family. I hope this might provide a little more info.
