I am Freds'son and was with him the day he passed. He complained of chest pains and was hospitalized at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro and died peacefully that night of heart failure. A memorial service was held for him at the First Congregational Church in Wolfeboro which was attended by family and many life long friends. I thnk his fiend Lawrence Goldthwaite captured the essence of my father when he remembered him as a truely kind man.He is burried in the town cemetary next to my mother, Ruth Tarr Mowatt.in Wolfeboro. I am not aware of any obituary but if there is one it would be listed in the Granite State News.Hope this is helpful to you.My father was a wonderfull man who is deeply missed. I am pleased to hear that you are interested in his legacy. Please feel free to conact me if I can be of any further assistance to you.

David Mowatt

This article says the English Allards came from Gosport, England, near Southampton. They were Huguenot refugees from religious persecution in France. The English church records for these refugees start in 1567. I can mail you a copy of the article if you send your address, Except for Hugh, it doesn't mention the other names you gave.
My Allards were French Catholics who came from France to Canada. There were 3 men who brought the name from France to Canada, so it's hard to tell if any of their origins were the same as your people.

My ancestors include James Allard's (1982)great great great grandaugther Nancy, who married Henry Allard's (1693) great great great grandson Benjamin. James and Henry were sons of James and Honor Allard, with James being Hugh's son.

Hugh was born 1623 on the Isles of Shoals New Hampshire. We are trying to trace Hugh to England. Does your newspaper article by Barbara Allard touch on this information? It would be great documentation for my records if you could send it to me. My great grandfather Benjamin had cousins Pierre and Daniel who had a maple farm in Vermont, I am curious if Barbara was a descendent of theirs. I have a picture of their farm if you are interested.

Hello,

Only had a few hours to be at the State Archives, but did find some information.

Got Sarah's maiden name off of Isaac's death index. Having information about Isacc was a help.

Sarah's maiden name: Deering
Sarah's place of birth: Waterboro, Maine.
No information about Elisha's place of birth, although he was a farmer.

Issac Deering Smith's date of death: Nov. 20, 1898.
Place of death: Exeter, NH
Occupation: Blacksmith
Age at time of death: 77 years, 7 months

Issac married Mary Emily Chamberland.
Date of marriage: January 30, 1844
Place of marriage:Unknow
Both bride and groom's place of residence: Tuftonboro,NH(Town records 1832-1845, page 311) Not sure what that is about but it is recorded on the index card.

Tried to find Sarah's date of death, but there was a lot of Sarah Smiths, and I did not know her maiden name when I began.

Looked up date of death for Elisha, lots of Elisha Smiths also.
One that made the most sense was:

Elisha Smith
Place of death: wOLFBOROUGH
Date of death: Feb. 24, 1859
Age: Years 82, months 8, days 10
Place of birth: Hollis, Maine
Cause of death: Old age
No information about parents

I have all of this stuff copied along with other Elisha Smiths dates of death. Which prob. are not your Elisha. Dates do not really make a good case. If you want the copies mailed to you, my e-mail address:neuronmotor@yahoo.com

Hope this information is usefull.

Beth

Elisha S Smith was born in either Maine or Massachusetts, and if the calculations between his death date and age at death are correct, he was born on May 14, 1776. By 1840 he was living in Tuftonboro NH with his wife Sarah, where both are buried. It was listed on his stone that he was a Captain, and supposedly served in the War of 1812. I am trying to learn who were his parents, as well as Sarah's maiden name and parentage. They had a son in about 1821 named Isaac D. Smith, who married Mary E Chamberlin, if that helps!
thanks, faye

Hello, A very belated reply to your query re Shardrack Allard's birth date. Re-visiting it, I feel that the information which I was given cannot be right. His mother would have been in her 50s when she had him if it were accurate. I don't know where to look to find out what the correct birth date for Shardrack would be.

It looks like that there is a conflation between this Shardrack son of Henry Allard and the Shardrack who married Elizabeth Downes. I need to revisit this.

I can't remember if I contacted you about this line directly or not. I descend from Almira Allard, daughter to David Allard, Shardrack's nephew, and her husband Heziakiah True Fogg of Sandwich NH. They married in 1846, perhaps in Eaton Centre NH.
suedaveatboltblue.com

Elizabeth M. (Fabyan) Deering of ME, DoB abt 1840

Am not related. May be of interest to someone who is working on Fabyan line.
Alexander Deering was well known in CA, in particular in connection with getting the Yosemite turned into a park. Example newspaper extract doing a Google using Alexander Deering in quotes came up with following at a mariposa research URL:
//////////////////
Death of Judge DEERING
(submitted by William Disbro)
Again has the insatiate acher on the pale horse visited our domain and struck down another occupant of the District Court Bench, in this, the Thirteenth Judicial District The first was the honorable and amiable Judge Bondurant, and now his not less worthy sucessor, Judge Deerling, has been called upon to follow him across the deep, broad and turbid river, which is never passed over but once. He yielded up his spirit in Merced City, on Sunday morning the 19th instant. He received warning long since of the great change that was to come over him, and was not unprepared for the event. When last he saw the leaves of the forest turn yellow and fall to the ground before the blasts of winter, he accepted, the change as emblematic of his fate, and knew full well that he would not live to see the face of nature covered with the verdur of Spring. Patiently he awaited the final summons, and without fear or trembling, he surrendered himself to the embraces of that eternal sleep, the quietude of which will never be disturbed by the tumult of a jarring world. Judge Deering was a native of the state of Maine, aged 43. He came to Mariposa in July, 1855, where he located, and ever after considered home. From 1856 to 1864 he was associated with Samuel A. Merritt in the practice of law. In 1859 he was elected District Attorney, and at the expiration of the term he was re-elected. In 1862 he made a visit to his native state and while there he was married to Miss Lizzie M. Fabyan, of Boston, Massachusetts. In November, 1865 Govenor Low appointed him District Judge, to fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of Judge Bondurant, which station he filled until Jan 1st, 1868. In Oct. 1873 he was elected my the voters of the district to continue in that office, which he did to the time of his death. His wife died on the 9th of December 1874, preceeding him one year and ten days. Their marriage was unattended by issue. That we live, and move, and have our being is certain. Equally so is death. It is just as natural as life, and should not be sought and cannot be avoided. Eighteen months ago the brown house on the side of the hill, wreathed with evergreens and fragrant flowers, with its grounds covered with mossy grass, and its sidewalks lined with ordamental trees and vines, was the scene of domestic happiness. There, in that beautiful retreat, made vocal by the warblings of feathered songsters, lived this amiable pair. They seemed to exist but for love and enjoyment. The harmony which attended their short journey though life, was remarked by all our citizens. But alas! How fleeting are all earthly pleasures. These two, so well mated, and in possesion of the comforts of life, have been called to another sphere, and a mournful air now seems to prevade these precints once so peaceful and full of domestic bliss.

Jan 1, 1876 issue of the Mariposa Gazette. Hou. Alexander Deering. Our friend and fellow citizen, the subject of this notice, has left us to join the great majority. No one has left our community more universally esteemed and lamented. He was born June 15th, 1832, at Demark (sic Denmark) Oxford County, Maine; received his early education at the excellent common schools and high schools of that commonwealth, and having prepared for college entered Bowdoin. Being caste physically in a fragile frame the severity of the college course tested his constitution, and compelled him to relinguish his college life at the end of the sophomore year, from which he entered the eminent law office of Shipley & Dann, in the city of Portland, and after reading law with that firm he went to the law school of Harvard University, where he took high rank and finished the course. Here the delicacy of his condition once more gave him admonition that the rigors of a New England climate would be a perpeptual menace from the Great Destroyer, so he came to California in 1854, and after a brief sojurn in San Francisco, settled in Mariposa, being first associated with Judge R.H. Daily, and soon after becoming a partner with the Hou. Samuel A. Merritt. It did not take people long to learn his genuine character and professional ability. Business flocked in upon the firm, and young Deering became District Attorney - retiring therefrom because outside professional business would not justify his longer filling the position. After being for a long time the counsel of the Mariposa Company, in the palmy days when Park and Olmstead and Dodge gave life to that vast estate by the superior vigor of their management, a vacancy occuring in the District Judgeship by the demise of Judge Bindurant, Gov. Low tendered him the appointment. Serving out the term of his appointment with great credit to himself and acceptability to the people, he again retired to the practise of his profession. But in 1873 the people elected him over a popular Democrat in this Democratic District. His funeral in San Francisco was very largely attended by leading citizens. All of the Courts adjourned out of respect to his memory, and feeling obituary remarks were made on the occasion. His pall barers were Hou. Edmound Burke, Hou. Samuel H. Dwindlle, Hou. M.C. Blake, Hou. W.D. Sawyer, Lewis Shaw, Daniel J. Murphy, H.H. Hewliett, Hugh Diamond, H. Edwards, A.W. Jee, and C.D.O. Sullivan. He lies buried in Lone Mountain, just below the burials of Baker and Broderick- interred besides his wife, in one grave in the burial pot of his brother. When shall we find so trustworthy and admirable a man to take his place? We share in the general condolance extended to his brother and family.

DEERING- Visalia Weekly Delta, Dec 24, 1874 (submitted by Mike White)
In Merced, December 9, 1874, Lizzie F., wife of Judge Alexander Deering.
///////////////////////
1860 Fedral census, CA, Mariposa
Deering, A/26/ME

1870 Fedral census, CA, Mariposa
Deering, Alex/38/ME/Lawyer
Deering, Elizabeth/30/ME
////////////////////////
I’ve posted several newspaper extracts for the Deering surname in Genforum. Whether there’s a relationship between Alexander and the others (except in the case of the marriage) I’m not sure.

If anyone has access to "Moultonborough, New Hampshire Vital Records" By Richard P. Roberts, Published by Heritage Books, 2000 or a similar book I would be interested to know if it contains any reference to the family of Cephas Smith [1801, Sanbornton-1850, (Somersworth?)]. I am particularly interested in the children of his second marriage to Sally (or Sarah)Calley (nee Morrison). Some of the children may have been born in Moultonborough and others in Sanbornton.

revised again. Julia A. Leavitt can't be dau. of Samuel Leavitt and Lydia Foster, they weren't old enough. Sorry for the confusion. They did live right next door to Julia and her husband Carle Drew in 1870 Eaton Census, and they are on the next page in the 1850 census in Eaton.

See my previous note -I looked again at Eaton census records, and I may have some of this wrong. Samuel Leavitt is in 1850 & 1860 Eaton census with Lydia; but in 1870 with Nancy. So the order of wives may be wrong, and the dau. Julia must be a dau. of Lydia Foster, not Nancy Jenness.

I don't have a lot, but I do have some on this family:
John F. Leavitt & Mary Dolloff both buried Jenness-Leavitt Cemetery, Eaton. (John F. was son of Samuel Leavitt and Sarah Phinney) John F. Leavitt's son Samuel Leavitt b. abt 1793 d. 10 Mar 1879 Eaton; m. 1st Lydia Foster b abt 1798 d. 3 Mar 1862 Eaton. Both buried Jenness-Leavitt Cemetery. Samuel married 2nd Nancy Jenness b. abt 1791 d. 3 Jan 1881 Eaton, buried Currier-Wilkinson Cemetery, Eaton. Samuel and Nancy had a daughter Julia A. Leavitt b. 1812 (in Maine, I think), d.aft 1880 Eaton. She married Carle Drew b 2 Mar 1809 Newfield, Maine, d 18 May 1887 Eaton. Both buried Cold Brook Road, Eaton. 1850/1860/1870 Eaton census - 1870 shows them living next door to each other. This interests me because Carle Drew's father was Clement N. Drew, my GGG Grandfather. So, keep in touch.
I haven't recorded siblings of Samuel Leavitt, but some info came from Conway Library cemetery records, which are not perfect, but a good start - perhaps more can be found there.

I am looking for descendants of John F. Leavitt (1769-1847)and his wife Mary Dolloff (1771-1849). Does anyone know who their children were? They are the right age to be the parents of Almira Leavitt (1804-bef 1870) who married Jesse Sargent. Almira was from Eaton and their marriage is recorded there.

Any other Leavitt info that might fit would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for replying. I know there are a lot of Leavitts. Trying to find parents of a daughter prior to the 1850 census is frustrating. By the way, I just returned from a day trip to Freedom and Eaton NH. I took a lot of grave photos from the area, some of them Drew family. I don't think I took any Leavitt's. I will be posting them on Findagrave.com as soon as I can. I only got to photo 4 or 5 cemeteries. Will have to return for more.

I will be glad to send you a copy of the article from a New Hampshire Unitarian newspaper of the 1980's. It certainly sounds like your family. The article was written by Barbara Allard of Lyndonville, VT who unfortunately passed away before I could contact her. I don't know whether her extensive family history was passed on to the town historical society, but you might contact them also.
I can't scan the article, but if you send your address I will mail it to you.

Marge Allard

These names are mentioned in the article, but the relationships are not entirely clear. Have you tried the NH Vital Statistics in Concord? Anyway I'll send the article.

Looking for information or relatives of Michael and Charles Carroll, who immigrated to America in the 1800's. Michael was born about 1816 and Charles was born about 1824. There parents were William Dalton Carroll and Catherine O'Dell or Odell. I have no other info on them other than they had 5 other brothers. 1 stayed in Ireland, he was called Dalton Carroll, and 4 others, Richard, William, John, and Francis immigrated to Australia.

I hit the state archives today, looking at births prior to 1900. I found a half dozen Sarah Weeks but none born in 1829 in Tamworth. I searched the unnamed Weeks, not there.

Could she have been born out of state? Her birth not registered? Misfiled? David

I would be very interested in the Weeks book you mention in your email. I've been trying to work back from David Fisher and his spouse, Sarah Weeks, both born around 1794 in Penn.

Please let me know if I could purchase a copy. Thank you.

Craig Fisher
fisher7@gmail.com
