Mrs. William Gaston (Tryphena Lary Brackett Gaston)
Less than seventy words will tell the story of seventy-years and compile all that need be published of the life and death of Tryphena Lary who departed this life on the fourth instant in the first month of her seventy-first year. She was the daughter of Jothan S. Lary and Eliza Jackman, and was born at Milan-corners, New Hampshire, March twenty-second, 1836. She was the fourth born in a family of ten children. In 1859 she was married to Dennis Brackett, to which union two children, Don A. and Fannie E. Brackett, were born. With her husband she removed to Brown county, Kansas in 1864. A few years later, death of the husband dissolved the first union.
In 1870 she was re-married to William Gaston who now survives her.
Since 1874 she has been a resident of Jewell county, Kansas, where on the East Buffalo homestead she has lived the major portion of her life.
She was converted and baptized into the Baptist church at Fairview, Kansas, in 1871. Removing to Jewell county she at once united with the Jewell Baptist church, there worshipping at East Buffalo.
Since that time her life-work has been inter-woven into both pattern and fiber of the church's history.
She was one of those good, plain, faithful, Christian women, who will be missed in the home and at the bedside caring for the sick and dying. She was always to be found ready to administer to the needy. Even to the last day she would occassionally rise above the agony of pain to ask concerning the welfare of others, thus manifesting that spirit which was characteristic of her life--unselfishness.
In this life she leaves to mourn, her husband, Wm. Gaston, one son, Don A. Brackett, one daughter, Fannie E. Harrison, all of Jewell City, two stepsons, Chas. M. Gaston of Portland, Oregon, and W.L. Gaston of Creston, Iowa, two brothers, four sisters, nine grandchildren and a large circle of other relatives, friends and neighbors, who knowing her, pay the tribute of sincere grief to the memory of a plain and useful life.
She is buried in the Wallace Cemetery, 2 miles east of Jewell City, Jewell Co, KS. Born 22 Mar 1836, died 04 Apr 1906.
