Tryphena Lary Brackett Gaston, daughter of Jothan S. Lary and Eliza Jackman

Obituary (I am not related to this family and have no further information)

Mrs. William Gaston (Tryphena Lary Brackett Gaston)

Less than seventy words will tell the story of seventy-years and compile all that need be published of the life and death of Tryphena Lary who departed this life on the fourth instant in the first month of her seventy-first year. She was the daughter of Jothan S. Lary and Eliza Jackman, and was born at Milan-corners, New Hampshire, March twenty-second, 1836. She was the fourth born in a family of ten children. In 1859 she was married to Dennis Brackett, to which union two children, Don A. and Fannie E. Brackett, were born. With her husband she removed to Brown county, Kansas in 1864. A few years later, death of the husband dissolved the first union.

In 1870 she was re-married to William Gaston who now survives her.

Since 1874 she has been a resident of Jewell county, Kansas, where on the East Buffalo homestead she has lived the major portion of her life.

She was converted and baptized into the Baptist church at Fairview, Kansas, in 1871. Removing to Jewell county she at once united with the Jewell Baptist church, there worshipping at East Buffalo.

Since that time her life-work has been inter-woven into both pattern and fiber of the church's history.

She was one of those good, plain, faithful, Christian women, who will be missed in the home and at the bedside caring for the sick and dying. She was always to be found ready to administer to the needy. Even to the last day she would occassionally rise above the agony of pain to ask concerning the welfare of others, thus manifesting that spirit which was characteristic of her life--unselfishness.

In this life she leaves to mourn, her husband, Wm. Gaston, one son, Don A. Brackett, one daughter, Fannie E. Harrison, all of Jewell City, two stepsons, Chas. M. Gaston of Portland, Oregon, and W.L. Gaston of Creston, Iowa, two brothers, four sisters, nine grandchildren and a large circle of other relatives, friends and neighbors, who knowing her, pay the tribute of sincere grief to the memory of a plain and useful life.

She is buried in the Wallace Cemetery, 2 miles east of Jewell City, Jewell Co, KS. Born 22 Mar 1836, died 04 Apr 1906.
Hello:
I am trying to track down my great-grandfather and his family. I know he lived in Berlin in 1889 and beyond as he and his wife Hattie L. had my grandfather there on June 20 of that year. They also had a daughter, Emma Louise, in 1885. They divorced sometime after 1890 and it appears that William stayed there and Hattie and the children ended up in Beverly Mass, although I don't know if they moved there directly or not. William apparently moved to Berlin from Tuftonboro, although the town clerk there didn't find anything about him.

What I am trying to find out are information on their divorce, the names of his parents and Hattie's mother's name (her father was Jamed D. Black form the Bangor area of Maine - part of his family lived in the Solon area). I would appreciate any additional information, or any leads, you could share with me.

1850 Orona , Penobscot Co. Me Edwin H. age 11 with parents Samuel 1794 & Hannah 1798, and siblings Olive 1826, Samuel 1828, Jonathan 1830, Lucy 1833, Orin 1835, Martin 1837, Edwin H. 1839, Levi 1842, living with the Estes family (spelled Ester) is Sarah Antoni age 85 noted as pauper and Davis Estes age 44 a laborer. Sam is noted as lumberman

1860 Oron, Penobscot Co. ME Edwin Estes is noted living with the John & Belinda Merrill family in Orono, Me and noted as millman

Pension records say Edwin H. Estes married Ellen Goodno She passed away in 1880 and Edwin remarried to Ada Richardson. All the children were from Ellen. Ada & Edwin had no children.

1870 Randolph Coos Co., NH Edwin H. Estes with wife Ellen 1851/NH and son Frank 1867/NH. Edwin is noted as farm laborer .Living next door is Levi F. Estes his brother with family also noted as farm laborer.

1880 Union, Porter Co. Ind Edwin H. Estes with wife Ellen and Frank 1867/NH, Alice 1871/NH, Edwin1876/WI and noted as stone mason.

1880 Glenburn, Penobscot Co. ME is Ada Richardson 1861/ME with parents Simon 1835/Me and Lavone 1836/Ne and siblings Fred 1870/Me and Nellie 1873/Me. She married Edwin Estes 10/5/1880 in Glenburn, ME. Edwin first wife Ellen (cannot read maiden name) died between June and Oct of 1880 as she is noted in 1880 census with Edwin in Union Porter Co., IN.

1900 Isle Harbor Mille Lacs, MN Edwin Estes 3/1839, is with 2nd wife Ada 4/1862 and son by Ellen Edwin H. Jr. 9/1876/WI last name spelled Estis and noted as farmer
1909 Edwin passed away in EV, WA obit says living in Ev last 5 years. Pension files say he lived in Old Soldiers home 8/1903 to 12/1903. I suspect wife Ada and son Edwin moved to Everett, WA and that they took him out of the home and brought him to Everett. Appears Ada & Edwin had problems as at time of death 3/1909 Ada was living in Seattle and he commited suicide at his Ev home. Son Edwin Jr. was gone working in Cherry Valley logging camp which he continued to work for while living with Ada after Edwin Sr. death.

1910 Snohmish Co., Everett, WA is Ada Estes noted as widow and says no children living with stepson Edwin H. age 34 single and he is working in a camp.

Everett Daily Herald 4/5/1909 An Aged Man Ends His Life
Safely reaching his “three score and ten,” with an excellent military record to his credit, Edwin H. Estes, 70 years of age, sat down in the steps of his little home, 1823 Rockefeller avenue, and frank a fatal dose of strychnine this morning. Officer Johnson, driver of the police patrol wagon, and a neighbor, saw the aged man take the deadly draught but was unable to take the bottle away from the shaking hand until the poison had been swallowed. if anything happens to me, said the veteran earlier in the day to Johnson dont think it was my wifes fault, for she is a good woman and is good to me. And a little later something did happen, though neither Johnson nor anyone else who heard the old soldier talk of self-destruction believed that he would take his life. Dr. W.C. Cox was immediately called. Before driving to the house the physician gave hasty orders by telephone for an antidote to be administered, but upon arriving at 1823 Rockefeller, Edwin H. Estes was dead. Dr. Cox makes the statement that the suicide must have swallowed at least twenty grains of strychnine. Besides a widow the suicide is survived by a son. With is wife Estes made his home in the northern part of the city, living principally on a pension of $45 a month. The son is said to be employed by the Cherry Valley Logging Co. The deceased was a private in Company A, Twentieth Maine, and upon the reverse side of his discharge papers is written by his captain, Howard L. Prince, the following glowing tribute paid to gallantry :Edwin H. Estes, is a good soldier and has distinguished himself for gallantry and coolness in action. He was engaged in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Falling Waters, Rappahanock Station, Mine Run, Burt’s Station, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, North Anna, Bethseda Church, White Oak Swamp, Petersburg in the explosion of the mine. Since Chancelorsville he has been on duty in Batter C, First New York artillery.
The Estes family have resided in Everett for about five years. There was a time, friends state, when the elderly man drank to some extent, but during the last four years he had not touched liquor. During the absence of his wife in Seattle the old longing for drink returned and this is noted as being the primary reason for the suicide Edwin H. Estes served in 2nd ME Inf. Co. H as well as 20th ME Inf. Co. H as private and requested pension which in 1909 he was receiving at time of his death.
My grandmother, Leora McKeage Hartlen told me her father's name was Robert McKeage Jr, and her mom was Mable/Mabel Harding (my grammy mentioned her aunts were Ida Gould and Viola Sutton, for an uncle were Richard Harding). Siblings of my grandmother: Williard McKeage, Griselda (Chris) McKeage whom married Briar A Hartlen Jr, Evelyn Mckeage married Fred Stebbins, Clarice McKeage whom married Charles Knudson, and there are more, but can't recall all. Grammy told me that her dad did re-marry. She did say that her dad's dad was Robert McKeage Sr and her gram was Jennie Crawford McKeage. Gram loved Jennie. Gram stated she did not get along with her mom's mom, who was Ruth ?Covill Harding married John Harding. She stated that Robert came down from Canada with a brother, not sure if a William "whiskey" Mckeage or Alexander McKeage. Any information would be appreciated about McKeage or Harding.

Elijah Griffin, 1802-1890, Wolfeborough, Shelburne, Dummer, Milan and Ossipee, NH

Elijah Griffin
In the 1960s my grandfather Archie Griffin and other older relatives in Dummer, NH referred to Elijah as 'Elder Griffin'

Son of Susannah (or Susan) Lary and Benjamin Griffin

Husband of Phila Peabody and later of Lydia Roberts

Father with Phila of Elijah G. (married Mary Pettingill) and Orson (married Mary Prescott) and Charles (married Charlotte. D. Washburne) and Galen and Diana and Lizzy? Tammy? and with Lydia of Almon and Sampson and Lydia (married John A. Nichols) and John

Brother of Benjamin and Anne and Mary and Daniel [Daniel and other younger siblings may be half-brothers, Daniel's death certificate said his mother was 'Mary'] and Israel and Peter and John L. and Joseph C.

Born Dec 11, 1802 in Wolfeborough, NH
Died May 29, 1890 in Ossipee, NH

Occupation: Free Will Baptist Minister, Farmer

Biography
Elijah was born 11 December 1802 in or very near Wolfeborough, NH. His parents almost certainly were Benjamin Griffin and Susannah Lary whose marriage bans were published in Wolfeborough on 21 June 1801.

Elijah married Phila May Peabody in Shelburne, NH on 23 July 1823. Their son Elijah G. Griffin was born in Shelburne in 1825.

Before 1840 Elijah and family moved to a farm in Dummer, NH (today owned by Rachel Holt Jewett) which Elijah got for free -- the glebe for being the first settled minister in Dummer. Elijah was pastor of the Milan Free Will Baptist congregation from at least 1840 to at least 1846. Phila died before 1850 and around 1850 Elijah married Lydia Roberts. Elijah and Lydia and young children left Dummer around 1860.

In 1889 Elijah was a farmer in Ossipee, NH. Elijah died in Ossipee on 24 May 1890 and was buried in the Roberts Family Graveyard (which in the 1850s/60s had been called the Smallpox Cemetery). In 1909 Elijah's body was moved by a son-in-law to the Ossipee Valley Cemetery.

Daniel Griffin, B.ca 1820, D 1894 Gorham, NH -- Hard Times, Difficult Records

Daniel Griffin (ca. 1820-1894) of Gorham, New Hampshire lived a life of hard times.
His surviving records have many inconstancies.

Nathan True's "History of Gorham" says Daniel Griffin was born in Shelburne, NH 12 July 1817.
Daniel Griffin's Death Records in the Gorham Vital Records say he was born in Hastings, Maine.

Most records say he was the child of Benjamin Griffin and Susan (or Susannah) Lary,
Daniel's Death Record list his parents as Bey Griffin and Mary.

Daniel's wife's name is listed variously as Acsah, Avah, Achsah and Alice Wilson.

The 1850 Gorham Census has him born 1821 in NH with no occupation.
The 1860 Gorham Census has him born 1818 in NH, occupation: Farm Laborer and Pauper.
The 1870 Gorham Census has him born in 1816 in NH, occupation: Day Laborer

In 1862 Daniel enlisted in the 12th Reg. Maine Volunteers in Portland, Maine.
He was discharged in 1865 with his health damaged by malaria and other ills contracted in the Civil War.
He got a Civil War pension.
His pension papers in the National Archives variously indicate he was born, 1815, 1817, 1818 or 1821.

Daniel Griffin and Acsah (or Avah, Achsah and Alice)'s children were:
Almina, Solomon, Annette, John, Nelson, Lucinda, Nathaniel and William.

Daniel and his wife are buried in the Evans Cemetery, in Gorham, NH.

There seems little doubt that Daniel's father was Benjamin Griffin who moved to Gorham from Wolfeborough, NH.
Benjamin married Susan (or Susannah) Lary in Wolfeborough and had a couple of children there with her (including my ancestor Elijah Griffin).

Perhaps Susan Lary Griffin died and some of Benjamin's children born in Shelburne and Gorham were from a second wife Mary?

Or perhaps Daniel's Death Records in the Gorham Vital Statistics just reflect general confusion about Daniel's vital statistics?

WEBB, Harriet Cornelia "Hattie"

Harriet Cornelia WEBB (born 7 May 1852 in Milan, Coos, NH) is my great grandmother. I do not have other information (names, dates, etc.) regarding who her siblings or parents are. She married John Henry GIBSON (born 20 Jan 1846 in Westbrook, Cumberland, ME)on 12 Oct 1867 (location unknown). John Henry GIBSON served in the Civil War, and after being discharged, was a carriage maker employed by Kimball Brothers in Portland, ME. I do not know where they met or anything about their courtship. In about 1868, they moved to the small town of Bridgeton, Cumberland, ME where he continued carriage making on his own. In 1872, the family moved to Omaha, Douglas, NE where they remained for 19 years. In about 1891, John Henry and "Hattie" left Omaha and moved to Buffalo, Erie, NY where John Henry became general manager of the American Investors Trust. Hattie died in Buffalo on 10 Sep 1898 and John Henry remarried to Katherine McINTYRE on 26 Apr 1899, and they remained in Buffalo. John Henry GIBSON died in Buffalo on 16 Sep 1931. He and "Hattie" WEBB are both buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Buffalo, NY.

I have more information on the 5 children and their descendants born to John Henry GIBSON and Harriet Cornelia WEBB and would be willing to share information. I am trying to find anyone who can connect with Harriet Cornelia WEBB and provide information regarding her siblings and parents. John Henry GIBSON is a descendant of John GIBSON of Cambridge, MA who was born in England about 1601, immigrated to MA and died in Cambridge in 1694 and information on the GIBSON descendants is readily available.

Henry E. Stevens Obituary and LOOKUP

Coos County Democrat, Weds., Feb. 23, 1944.

HENRY E. STEVENS

On Sat., Feb. 12, Henry E. Stevens passed away at his home after a brief illness. Henry Emery Stevens was born in Milan, NH, Oct. 11, 1855, to Calvin P. and Sarah (Emery) Stevens. On Feb. 16, 1876 he married Cora Rowell of Stark, NH, and the same day they moved to the farm where they spent the remainder of their lives. Three children were born to them, Lillian May (Mrs. George Dexter), Willie H. and Stanley R.

Mr. Stevens was a very quiet man who spent most of his time at home, carrying on his farm. He did this very successfully and efficiently. He seldom went out to social gatherings yet he was truly interested in his friends and his town. To every worthy cause he gave most generously and the church will miss his interest. He was a kindly man and well read, a keen businessman, yet never one to take unfair advantage in order to better himself. He was one of those strong, dependable men so much needed in any community, and so truly missed. At different times he served the town as lister and selectman, being on the board of selectmen when the Mountorne bridge was built.

Funeral services were held from his late home on Feb. 15, Rev. M.H. Porter officiating. Besides the sons and daughters he is survived by four grandchildren, Herbert Stevens, Mrs. Gladys Willson, Ruth Stevens, and Henry Dexter, and three great grandchildren. The relatives have the sympathy of the community in their loss, yet the memory of a man who won the respect and confidence and sincere regard of everyone who knew him must serve as a blessing and inspiration rather than a cause for sorrow.

Hello -- Looking for info. on the parents of Mary Elizabeth (aka Mary Ellen) Stewart, whose Wisc. death cert. says she was born in Lancaster, N.H., 9 Mar 1877.

Her parents were Thomas Stewart of Scotland (b. 25 Jun 1845) and Elizabeth McMahon or McMann (or MacMahon/MacMann) of N.H. (b. 12 May 1848). They married ca. 1866/67 in N.H. Mary's birth info. strikes me as the best first step to finding more on Thomas & Elizabeth.

I've found them (I think) in the 1870 census in Meredith, Belknap County, N.H., but can't get a solid lock on either one of them in 1860 or 1850 (Thomas might've immigrated after 1860, but Elizabeth should be there somewhere).

Every later census record (1880-1910) says Elizabeth's parents were Scottish, as does her death cert in Minn. But every McMahon/McMann I can find in likely N.H. locations around the time she lived has Irish origins -- according to census records, at least.

She was Catholic, so Irish certainly is plausible, but she and her kids described her as a descendant of Scots as far back as I have solid records on her. I have most of the records from later in her life, but very little contemporary to her life in N.H.

Not sure how difficult it is to obtain Mary Stewart's 1877 birth record from Coos County, or how much info. it might include, but any general instructions in that direction would also be a great help.

Thanks,
Carter

I am looking for the ancestry of Deacon Evans WILSON. He was born about 1799, and he married on September 9, 1819, Anne BRAY, daughter of Nicholas BRAY. Earl died on January 15, 1872. Evans and Anne are both buried by the main entrance to the Evans Cemetery in Gorham, N.H. It also seems that with the first name of Evans, there must be some connection to the Evans family. I appreciate any help you can offer.
I just received copies of death certificates for my grandfather and uncle and they are both buried there. I have tried to search out Summer St. cemetery but am not having much luck. The names I'm looking for there are Hiram Edward Round died Aug. 1917, George Allen Round died Apr. 1969. Most like Hiram's parents, George Richard Round and Lettie Round, are also buried there. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Joseph Jackson - Gorham, New Hampshire 1807-1815

Hello!

I am assisting my 81-year-old mother to do research on her family. My mother's name is Ruth Louise Jackson Sinclair (Mrs. John P. Green). She was born in Waltham, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, but now lives in Somers Point, New Jersey. Her mother's father was Edward Cross Jackson of Lancaster, New Hampshire. Edward Cross Jackson's father was Willard Cross Jackson. Edward Cross Jackson's great-grandfather was Joseph Jackson.
Born in Durham, New Hampshire around 1754, Joseph Jackson died in Newry, Maine in 1835. He served in the Continental Army from Massachusetts and the Continental Navy from New Hampshire during the Revolutionary War. His wife's name was Mercy Jackson (Her maiden name is unknown.). He was a hatter, a person who made and sold hats.
From 1807 to 1815 Joseph Jackson lived in Gorham, New Hampshire. While living there, he was arrested and imprisoned for passing counterfeit money. (This money was given to him by his uncle, the famous criminal Hanry Tufts.) Joseph Jackson broke out of prision and went on a sailing ship to Matanzas, Cuba.
If anyone has information about the arrest and imprisonment of Joseph Jackson or about his life, my mother and I would very much like to receive it. We would very much like to know who the parents of Josph Jackson were so that we could find out when my mother's Jackson family came from the British Isles to the American Colonies and if they settled in Massachusetts or New Hampshire first.
My mother is the only one of her brothers and sisters still living and would like to learn as much as possible about her family. Thank you very much for your kind assistance with our genealogical research.

Sincerely,

Susan M. Jackson Sinclair Green Grady
Alexandria, Virginia

We have a genealogy visit to Coos County planned in May to retrieve info on my deceased grandfather. (1) Does anyone know if there still exists the public school(s) building or site in Jefferson that was in existence in the 1913-1925 era? (2) Also, where would I go to find out the general area of Jefferson/Lancaster where a family would have lived during the 1906-1930 era? (3) And is taking out a small ad in the local paper asking for anyone who would know about our family worth it at all? (I know his VFW post, church membership, place of employment, schools, etc) My main goal/dream is to somehow obtain a picture of him!
