Toscan/Tuscan - Out of Wedlock Birth. ????

I am writing to ask how I could find out if there was an illegitimate birth in 1787 in Rockingham County or anywhere in New Hampshire? Our line may have come from an out of wedlock birth or an affair??? Does anyone have any ideas of how I could find this out? I have gotten the possible father's probate records and there was no listing to my knowledge of any land or money etc.. being left to our ancestor John Tuscan by Jean Joseph Maria Toscan who married Elizabeth Parrot in 1790. Our John was b. about 1787. We have a listing on a census that he was b. in Ma. , but on his son John't death record it says his father was b. in Greenfield NH. Which could have been ment to be Greenland also? Jean Joseph Maria Toscan was the Vice Consul from France to New Hampshire and he was written as JOHN TUSCAN in the Lancaster, Coos county history, and in census he was recorded as John Toscan. I would like to know if there is any way to find out about births out of wed lock. Any suggestions? Thank you. Sal

Try different iterations of spellings as well, sometimes the names were hard to read when they were indexed. If nothing else it will give you somewhere to look.

You won't find every birth recorded, but you might find a lead.

Good hunting.

This is great!!!!!
I went to Arlington High and the secretary was Ruth(Burke) Keefe, that's how I found out about Burke side of the family.
The Roper's on Newport Street in Arlington - your grandmother's brother Joseph lived there with his family and then his son Joseph lived there until 2006. He used to come to all the family funerals. I have no idea why my grandmother, Alice(Killoren)Roper didn't stay in touch with them or the Burke's!!!!!

What till you hear the story about Ruth Roper b 12/1890, she would be your grandmother's(Helen I. Roper Burke)sister.

I searched for her for about 4 years, finally found a deed where she was mentioned along with the other siblings(it was for property on the Furfey's side, which is your grandmother's mother's maiden name. Ruth ended up with a married man, Robert Scott, who invented some sort of knitting machine, started a business(there was one in Laconia NH)and was loaded. He wanted his wife to accept Ruth into the household but naturally she wouldn't so the two of them went to NY and lived together. He adopted Ruth's son, Robert Eldredge(don't know when Ruth was married, but on one of the census she is listed as a widow) and when this man died, he left his wife out of the will and left everything to Ruth. When Ruth died in 1935 it went to her son!!!!!! If you search the New York(county)NY message boards for messages by mmbutts1 as the author, you'll see all the stories - they made the papers.

I found the Burke family on census - I have that info too if you haven't found it!!!!

I'm going to ancestry.com now and see what I have to do to allow you to add info - I'll get back to you.

Margaret

Hi Margaret,

This is definitely my family!!

My grandfather is William C. Burke and my grandmother Helen I. Roper. My father is William F. Burke. His siblings are: Joseph, Ruth, and another brother Donald who is not listed. Donald is the only one who is living (he's my Godfather!).

This is great!! I've been working on a family tree for my mother, and I recently decided to start doing a little research for my father's lineage.

What is the procedure for me to add more information to the Ancestry tree, or do I need to go through you? I'm waiting to hear back from my Uncle Don about birth and deceased dates.

Gail

I don't know or am not related to any of the people you discuss (Abner and Rebecca Lewis Kiplinger), but I noticed you posted this query on the Rockingham county New Hampshire board--when maybe you meant to be on the Virginia Rockingham county board?? At any rate, since I'm at several deadends at the moment in my own research, I just put the names and info you provided into an ancestry search and found:

1850 US Census, Washington, Wayne County IN, Abner Hillinger (age 19) was with relatives(Jacob born 1798 in VA and Abigail born 1808 in VA). Are these his parents? Some chance Jacob is an older brother. Siblings listed were James b.1830 VA, Martin b. 1835 VA, Lucinda b. 1841 IN, Louisa b. 1845 IN. I'm pretty sure this is the Kiplinger family, as in 1860, Jacob and Abigail (with daughter Louisa and new dau Sarah A b1850 IN) are next to Abner, Rebecca and George in Union, Delaware County, IN.

I also found the census records for Abner in 1870, 1880 and 1900. The Indiana Marriage Collection yielded the wedding date of 11 Sep 1856. The Indiana Death Collection says Abner died 13 Jul 1900 (indexed as Keplinger) and Rebecca died 11 Nov 1904 in Shideler, Delaware Co. IN. I went to findagrave dot com, and they had an entry for an Abner Kiplinger in Beech Grove Cemetery (Interment #351, Sec 5 N 1/2, lot book page 63, lot #20) in Muncie, but list the death date as 13 Sep 1900 (with dob unknown). I don't know if this is information you had or what exactly you are seeking, but you may want to repost in the state of Virginia. Good Luck.
Pat Wallace

I got some best help from someone just this past weekend. And with this information I recived I got a clue of how I may get my answer to question I have been wondering ever since I started my research. This has to do with my great great uncle Charles Hannibal Briggs he ended up marrying his third cousin Magaret Ann Briggs. With her parents being Morrill and Briggs, this is the same for Charles H.Briggs.The names of his parents are Caleb Tracy Briggs and her name being Elizabeth Ursula(Morrill)Briggs. Now with Margaret Ann Briggs I don't have a clue what the names of her parents are.I just wonder if anybody who maybe doing research on the Morrill and Briggs connection can help me.With what I have already take up to fully explain it would be way to long.Beside's if your a memeber and you want more information you can either leave me a message or checkout my family tree to uderstand what I mean.I thank you for either helping me or just checking my message.

Hi, I too am researching this family of Smith's. Although I am trying to research a Benjamin Smith, cousin to your Jesse Smith. I to found a Alexander Smith connection but found the marriage listing as Mehitable Fifield b. 6-15-1736
m. March 13, 1760 in Kingston, NH Where Jesse fits in I am not to sure of yet. Do you have a listing of the children of Alexander? I am only showing 6 and may be missing either another wife or more children.
Have you looked at the Chautauqua County NY history for a short mention of Jesse Smith. It also mentions his cousin Benjamin but I have not been able to get all the relationships in correct order yet.

I found this listing:
EZEKIEL, son of Alexander and Mehitable (Fifield) SMITH, b. July 20, 1770; d. in Piermont Dec. 17, 1857; m., Bristol, Jan. 16, 1807, HANNAH, dau. of Jonathan and Abigail (Cleveland) INGALLS of Bristol; b. April 3, 1787; d. Jan. 3, 1877. When married Mr. Smith was a farmer in Bristol, where he res. until 1828, when he moved to Peacham, Vt. In 1848 he moved to Piermont, N. H.

Hi again. A quick look at the 1860 census shows this man:

PURINGTON, JOHN W (1860 U.S. Census)
NEW HAMPSHIRE , ROCKINGHAM, EPPING
Age: 60, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: NH
Series: M653 Roll: 678 Page: 413

I think it says he has another family living with him.

And this man with a wife and 6 or 7 children:

PURINGTON, JOHSUA (1860 U.S. Census)
NEW HAMPSHIRE , ROCKINGHAM, EPPING
Age: 50, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: NH
Series: M653 Roll: 678 Page: 412

and this lady, supposedly a widow:

PURINGTON, NANCY (1860 U.S. Census)
NEW HAMPSHIRE , ROCKINGHAM, EPPING
Age: 78, Female, Race: WHITE, Born: NH
Series: M653 Roll: 678 Page: 412

and this man with a wife and children:

PURINGTON, THEODORE (1860 U.S. Census)
NEW HAMPSHIRE , ROCKINGHAM, EPPING
Age: 45, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: NH
Series: M653 Roll: 678 Page: 412

That's all for now.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

P.S.

I forgot to mention in my other response that that web site had this information:

Following the American Revolution, many residents of the town moved to Monmouth, Maine, when General Henry Dearborn offered free land to his soldiers. Through the 1800s, farming was a principal occupation in Epping. The town also had substantial reserves of clay, long used by local residents to make bricks, and in 1840, the first commercial brickyard was established in Epping.

I looked at this page and on quick look I don't see it mentioning Quakers:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epping,_New_Hampshire

http://www.ci.epping.nh.us/

I'm curious whether you have census information on the PURINGTON family.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Dana, I went to the Maine Historical Society page and searched for the Quaker records of Dover, NH. Nothing came up in the search. Is this a database available to only Members? I'm interested in Quakers records because I had a Judkins family from Unity, NH and am hoping some family records are in this Dover, NH Quaker record.
Thank you, Kathi ................

Greetings-I see it's been awhile since you posted this, but here goes...My Great Grandfather, William Anderson Brickell was born in NH in 1826. As an adult, he lived in Belleville NJ, but I know for a while he lived in Taunton MA. He was a machinist & inventor. I believe his parents emmigrated from England, but I'm not positive. They may have come from Ireland. One final note; William Anderson Brickell named his last child James Harry Brickell. Interesting, huh? Looks like there might be a link there. I'd be glad to hear more from you.

I'm trying to find the grave of my great great grandfather, John L. Purington, who is buried in Epping, Rockingham County, N.H. The Death Records I have only go up to 1847 and he died in 1849. I have his marriage record from Massachusetts but not from his earlier marriage in New Hampshire. I also can't find birth records for any of his family. Someone mentioned that Quakers kept their own records and she thought she had seen the name Purington in Quaker records. I'm wondering if anyone has info on Quakers in Rockingham County, especially Epping and/or info on the Puringtons.

Thanks for any help you can give!
Sue P.

Hi Dana,

More records gave me more questions! I wondered if you know if people became Quakers or if the family usually came over already Quakers? My fourth gr grandfather was a Quaker and the third was also, although "not of eminent virtue", according to Governor Plumer and his brother gave up the faith as an adult. My second great grandfather fought in the war of 1812. George Puddington, seventh gr gr, owned a tavern and was drunk in public, I don't know if that would be unusual for a Quaker. George's son was a lieutenant and his son, my fifth great grandfather, was a soldier. I'm pretty sure of the connection between the fifth and fourth gr grandfather, I'm just wondering if it could all make sense. I'd appreciate your opinion.

Thanks for any light you can shed on this!

Sue P.

ABRAHAM CLARK family of Epping NH

"History of the City of Belfast in the State of Maine From Its First Settlement In 1770 to 1785" by Joseph Williamson, Portland, Loring Short Harmon, 1877 gives an account of the family of Abraham Clark and his four sons, Abraham JR., Elizha, Ichabod and Isaac. He states that Abraham and his sons came to Belfast from Londonderry NH shortly after the Revolutionary War. However, 1800 census entries for son Isaac in Northport and sons Elisha and Ichabod in Belfast all state they came from Epping, not Londonderry. Son Abraham Jr. in Belfast has no entry for where he came from, but in 1880, his son Thomas, of Vassalboro, ME, states his parents both born NH

Abraham died Belfast ME 1789. His wife died there 1791.

Abraham Jr. had known children Thomas, b. 3 Apr 1791, Holley, b. 19 May 1798, and Joseph b. 13 July 1806, d. 8 May 1810 of lockjaw. Abraham Jr. died prior to 1841. His widow, Anna, died Feb 1841 age 80. In 1820 "Hannah" Clark, age 45 and upward, is head of household with 1 male 16-26 and one female 26-45; perhaps son Holley and his wife?); son Thomas was head of his own household, Hannah appears again by herself in 1830, age 70-80. Abraham appears on the Belfast 1790, 1800 and 1810 census; was 45 and upward in 1800 and 1810, so was born 1755 or earlier. He does not appear after 1810, must have died 1810-1820, when his wife appears as head of her own household.

Elisha Clark, brother of Abraham Jr. arrived Belfast ME c. 1786, d. 1828, age 83 (b. c. 1745) He appears on Belfast census for the years 1790-1820.

Ichabod, brother of Abraham and Elisha, came here with them. He was the first tailor in town, removed to Northport, where he died. (Ichabod appears on the Northport 1820 census, must have died before 1830.) Children, all listed in Belfast births: Jacob, Abraham, Joseph, Nancy(b. 25 Oct 1812) Sally, John. These children are listed in VR Belfast ME, ch of "Ichabod and Polly", all without dates of birth. Daughter Nancy m. at Belfast 24 July 1831, Walter Coffin, b. 22 May 1811, s. Nicholas Coffin and Lydia Lemon. They lived 1 yr Enfield, Me, removed to Lee, Maine, in 1832, where they raised a large family. By census detail, Ichabod was born 1755-1765.

Isaac, brother of Ichabod, removed to Northport before 1800. Isaac was age 26-45 in 1800, thus would have been born 1755 - 1775 , and 1810 census age 45 and upwards, reduces that to 1755-1765.

To summarize, this family consists of Abraham Clark (? - 1789) of Epping NH and Belfast ME with wife Sarah, (?-1791), and 4 sons Elisha (1745-1828); Abraham (b. 1755 or earlier, d. 1810-1820) had wife Hannah or Anna; Ichabod (b. c.1756-1765) - d. 1820-1830, had wife Mary or "Polly"; and Isaac (b. 1865 or earlier, d. 1820-1830). I have not located marriage records for any of the four son, so I assume that they married in NH before they came to Belfast c. 1786. There may be other family who stayed behind in New Hampshire, or who migrated with husbands in a separate household.

In addition to the above 4 sons, there are two more possible sons. Maine Probate Abstracts lists Hancock County 1/76. estate of Thomas Clark of Belfast, died 28 Sep 1793, administrator Ichabod Clark. Costs include "Caring for the widow of of Abraham Clark, mother of Thomas Clark who with Elisha Clark were by an agreemenet bound to maintain said widow." It seems that Thomas was also a son of Abraham and Sarah, who by the time this estate was probated had died. Most likely Thomas and Elisha were the two eldest sons, and made an agreement at the time their father died in 1789 for the support of their mother. This probate suggests that Thomas stilled owed some portion of his share of that cost. We can tentatively place Thomas as an additional son between Elisha and Abraham Jr.

Vital Records of Belfast Maine to 1892, Volume 2 Deaths p513 "Clark, Jacob, s. Abraham, June 20, 1802, a. 15, C. R. 2" This would make him b. c. 1787. Although it is more likely that he is the son of Abraham JR, and grandson of Abraham Sr., I include him here as a remote possibility.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has knowledge of this family, especially of Ichabod, who is my direct ancestor, and not to be confused with the Ichabod Clark who married Mary Lancaster in Bangor ME 1796.

Diane in Indiana

Joseph Atkinson lived in Portsmouth/Greenland during the 1650's thru the the 1670's. There was another Joseph Atkinson family in Exeter/Brentwood in the 1720's thru the 1760's. there was a Dr. Joseph Atkinson in Durham during the 1730's thru the 1780's and of course there were the Theodore Atkinsons of Portsmouth /New Castle from about 1690 thru the late 1700's.
We chatted in Apr on my wife's profile on Ancestry. Here's what I have for Benjamin.

1) Alexander Smith b-9 Apr 1738 Chester NH, d-4 Mar 1824 Andover NH, Married Mehitable Fifield b-15 Jun 1736 Chester NH, d-13 Feb 1827 Andover NH

2) Moses Smith b-15 Feb 1773 Raymond NH, d-9 Oct 1846 Kiantone, Chautuaqua NY, Married Margaret Dollof b-6 Feb 1772 Raymond NH, d-6 Jul 1861 Chautauqua NY (sister of Jesse's mother Elizabeth and brother of Nicholas listed in "Early History of Ellicot NY" as being on the same saw mill gang as Jesse)

3) Benjamin Smith b-1797 NH, married Eunice Dix b-abt 1791 VT, d-29 Feb 1876 (possibly related to Jesse's wife Emily Dix, but I haven't found a connection yet)

4) Eaton Benjamin Smith b-26 Mar 1826, Panama, Chautauqua, NY, d-Sep 1901, Married Sarah Fletcher 30 Jan 1855, Warren Pa, b-1832 Harmony NY d-3 Aug 1860 Panama NY. Married Mary Nelson abt-1880/1 (widow of Henry Dix Smith, son of Jesse) b-1845 Bliss NY, d-1923 Elm Flats NY

5) Helen Gail Smith b-Aug 1882 Panama, NY

It looks like Moses' brother Ezekiel should have been married twice for the connections to work, I just can't find a reference to it. The other problem is Elizabeth and Margaret, is that the cousin connection for Benjamin and Jesse?
Above Alexander, Ancestry has it as Ezekiel-William-Nathaniel-Robert, but I haven't gotten that far yet, I'm still trying to make sure I'm not merging two different Ezekiels together and trying to verify the Revolutionary war reference I was given for Alexander.

Hope this helps.

I'm searching for information on William Adams. In May 1871, he and his wife Florence MACDONALD (25 Aug 1847 - 22 Jan 1890) an immigrant from PEI, Canada had a daughter named Effie. In 1880, Florence is already remarried to her second husband, James LOWRIE (Lowery) with a 3 year old having been widowed.

So all I know about William ADAMS is that he dies somewhere between 1870 and 1877, and he had a daughter Effie in 1871.

Effie's birthplace on her marriage license is Portsmouth, NH. In 1880 they are living in Kittery, ME. (The Portsmouth naval yard is in Kittery, James Lowrie was a marine.)

I'm looking for any information and documentation for William Adams, so far I've tracked a lot of dead ends. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Sue,

Called my father in law who is on the cemetary board in Epping, NH. He is in his late 80s and went to school with several persons in the Purington family( Luther, Ralph,Evelyn). He told me that the Quaker Church was called the Friends Church, and that most of the Quakers from that era were interned at the Friends First Cememtry, which is located on Blake Rd.
He also metioned Bud Purlington, who is on in years, knows alot of the family history and is living on Rt.107, not sure where, but heading towards Deerfield. He runs a small sawmill there.
Madaline Willingson, is a member of the Epping Historical Society, she has a list of tombstones.
It seems that there is alot of information available if your want to research the Purington Family.

Will get back to you. I hear that Bud is very willing and likes to share his family history. If you are interested I could contact him and ask him if he wants to talk with you, or I could take notes.

Let me know.

Best wishes,
Beth

The Purintons were
Quakers. The Quakers often refused to give vital record info
to the town, so that may be why you can't find them.

Hi Sue;
You could be a Quaker by birth or conversion. However, they take a vow of peace. It is not allowed for a Quaker to serve in the military. If they did, they would
be excommunicated. Also, being drunk in public was not allowed, but if infrequent, would result in a rebuke. One of my ancestors converted, after his son whipped a Quaker, for no reason.
Best wishes,
Dana

From the Book of Dow. The discussion of a third marriage seems a bit difficult to believe. The author had compiled the genealogies of six different people and despite much independent research, some errors do creep in. Note he also uses the present tense for some of the descendents. The book was published in 1929 so you can estimate from there.

Darius J Dow d Tufftonborough Nov 3, 1893, rec giving names of both parents. A grandson is authority for the statement that he was youngest of family, perhaps not accurate. Teacher, cabinet maker and farmer, most of his life was in Tuftonborough; m 1st Mary Ann Osgood b Apr 17, 1817, d Mch 1, 1840, dau of Dudley and Martha (Moore) of London. This, correct in Osgood Gen, badly garbled in Hist Canterbury. Of Newmarket, he m 2nd Dec 8, 1842, Lydia D Lucy of Pittsfield. A 3rd m is surely his: Darwin J b Gilmanton, ae 56, farmer of Tufftonborough, son of Jonathan and Joanna, m Apr 25, 1882, wid Lizzie R Graves, ae 52. If correct Darwin would come 33 years after marriage. A man invariably lies about his age at 2nd m but it is, neverless, astounding that a man of 71 should say he was 56 and get away with it. Children:
a Martha m Foss A Burnham of No. Berwick, Me
b Christiania m Webster Wells of Wells, Me
c Alice d unm
d Sidney Jerome b Newmarket July 2, 1846

Sidney J Dow traveling salesman of Boston, d Bridgewater Apr 3, 1908; m Great Falls, N H, June 6, 1868, Elmira Abigail Perkins b Wells, Me, Sept 30, 1853. Children:

a Fred d in infancy
b Grace Lillian, now Mrs Foprgate of Medford, Mass; letter returned "not found"
c Charles Pike b Peabody, Mass, June 13, 1877
d Arthur Francis; now bond broker of Boston and Sumerville

Parent of Darius:

Jonathan Dow Said to be b Epping 1776, will probably be proved as soon as someone searches rec of Epping second church. The late John Mark Moses began this search and had transcribed to 1772 before his untimely death. He cannot be son of a Benjamin b 1759. Perhaps he was one of the missing sons of Noah Dow of Gilmanton; if so, what was he doing in Walden? Kinsip with Nathaniel is much more likely. At all events Jonathan m Jan 7, 1796, Joanna Gilman b Dec 17, 1777, dau of Samuel and Alice Gilman of Newmarket. This Gilman family intermarried with [other Dow] line. The young couple settled in Walden 1797. The children appear first in Coventry and by the time they matured were as much at home in Gilmanton as in Vt.

a Samual b abt 1797
b Joanna b abt 1800
c Mary C (somewhat doubtful identity)
d Harrison (his d rec gives William H b Gilmanton Dec, 8 1819: we never forget that a twice married man invariably lies about his age)
e Winslow; living 1889 in West Danville, Vt
f Darius Jerome b Gilmanton
h Elsie

Children of Darius:

Charles P Dow became an orange broker and dealer in mortgages in Orlando Fla, returned to Boston about 1920 and organized the firm of C P Dow & Co, investment bonds. The failure of this firm in 1925 with liabilities well into the millions produced no small sensation, its assets small. Indicted on many counts in the Federal Court, he finally pleaded guilty on a charge of using the mails to defraud and was punished by a fine of $2,000. That the firm was very recklessly conducted was freely admitted. The penalty indicate that the Court did not find a degree of criminality charged by the sensational press. A little later he pleaded guilty to a charge of bucket-shopping and was fined $2,500. His unsecured creditors got 10 per cent on $6,000,000 liabilities.

He m Boston Jan 1, 1901, Carolyn Barker Heal b Westport, Me, Feb 23, 1878, dau of William and Harriet G (Cunningham). Children:

a Carolyn Eva B Boston Oct 15, 1902
b Marion Heal b Orlando, Nov 29, 1906
c Eleanor Pike b Medford, Mass, July 31, 1908

Arthur F Dow m Grace Iva Godfrey.
