Marriage Record

Still in search of a marriage record for Casper/Jasper Johnson and Mariah McGlathery. Bountyland application record gives the date as 24 Feb 1816 "near Camden" by Justice of the Peace, Thomas Green. I was informed that Camden was part of Gloucester County at that time, and I contacted Gloucester Historical Society concerning the record. They were unable to find anything. I am wondering if it is possible that the record may be with Camden County. Has anyone found the name "Thomas Green " as a Justice of the Peace in other marriage records? Might he have been a minister with a particular church? It appears that Casper and Mariah came to Camden from Philadelphia to get married, perhaps because they did not belong to the same church. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Mark

6 years ago I posted the following message, and from one of the replies I learned that Gloucester City is in Camden (I posted to the wrong County). Perhaps I'll have better luck here, so I am re-posting it. It is my hope that someone would be able to photograph this building and e-mail it to me. Thanks so much,
-Melissa
melissadmatt@yahoo.com

* I have an ancestor that up and left. No one saw or heard from him in about 8 years. Turns out he's joined the army, and is heading to England. I found his attestation papers and he enlisted in Toronto, Ontario, but his place of residence is 226 Market St. Gloucester, N.J. USA. His occupation is Ironworker.
Can anyone who may be a resident of Gloucester tell me anything about 226 Market St.?
Is/was there an ironworks in the area?
I knew nothing about this relative other than he died in 1918 in the war, and I am anxious to learn what I can about his life in NJ.
thanks so much,
Melissa Matt
Hello, try looking at "The Camden County Historical Society"
web site it has a list of any cemetery in that area. They also will do searches in their archives for a fee and have the records of some cemetery info. Also State of New Jersey vital records might prove useful. Good Luck!

Thanks, Joan, I looked at HSP's records and part of them show a Oliver Bair-Schroeder, Inc., but the dates are May 1969 to Dec 1973. I can only hope they inherited the records from Schroeder prior to them taking over. I plan to contact HSP and see if they can verify - I did not find a separate holding for Schroeder.

Karen

Thank you so much for the time and effort you spent finding this obit for me. There's not quite enough detail in it to be positive that he's "my" Joseph, but it does give me a little more to work with, and the "two brothers and one sister" does fit. Thanks also for offering to send a scan - I'd appreciate that and you can send it to me at bec@persona.ca. If ever you need help with Ontario or Quebec research, don't hesitate to ask.

I wasn't able to locate the missing brother of Berlin NJ, but wondered if perhaps Victor Refeld had a son from his previous marriage that William R Blakely might have considered his brother (step-brother).
--------------------------------------------
Victor L. Refeld - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 29 DEC 1881 Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Of France, m.
Mary Dowling of New Jersey.

May C. Refeld - International Genealogical Index / NA
Gender: Female Birth: 08 JAN 1885 Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, dau of Victor Refeld and Mary A.
--------------------------------------------

I also saw the following listing in Pittsburgh city directories and wondered if it might have been your Elizabeth and if she perhaps married Victor Refeld a couple
of years later than around 1899?

Pittsburgh city directories 1901-1902: list Elizabeth Blakely, widow of Charles, living at 2114 Ann (st?). Not listed before 1900 or after 1902.
I couldn’t pinpoint Charles Blakely though in the Pittsburgh directories.
-----------------------------------------
Donna,

This is a long shot five years later, but are you still doing lookups in south New Jersey?

I would love any death records (obit, death cert, cemetery, etc) for the following ancestor:

Mary REILLY (or RIELY or RILEY)
born about April 1845, in England
widow of Lewis H. REILLY, who died about 1895
mother of twelve children, all still alive in 1910

Mary REILLY disappears between 1918-1920, in Gloucester City, Camden County, NJ. Her last address was 324 Mercer Street, where she lived with her unmarried children.

Can you help?
Laura

Hi donna,

I think there may be a tie in our families, my problem is I have to find my program for my ancestry, as I just had redone my pc. I have a phebe,or spelled phoebe rogers, rodgers in my family which resided in Camden, whom married an louis okeson,(my great, great- grandfather). The name potts was in the same cememtary. I want to say it was evergreen, or new Camden. My family being poor had no headstones, but there was a rather large one with the name potts on it. I will try to get the program reinstalled, and give you what I have, if I remember right my rogers was not born here and may have been illegal immigrant. I do have the census images, and I’ll have to see if there is a link. I never looked in pa. for her family. The biggest hurdle is no birth certificate was needed prior to like 1890’s and rogers being almost common, I ran into dead ends.

Hope it helps,
Chris ireland
Hi Tracy!
My grandfathers name was Joseph Potts. His parents, Joseph Potts and Mary ( maiden name Rogers ), married in Plymouth, Pa. on June 9th, 1894. My grandfather was born May 7th, 1912 and passed away March 1st, 1975. Unfortunately, I was only 4 years old when he died. But, my mother told me a bit about his past, and I can tell you whatever you want to know about his family since then. My email is dcrawford8228@btinternet.com

Hope to hear from you! :)
Donna

The Victor A Refeld born about 1883 who is eventually found in Knox Co OH is a child from the elder Victor Refeld's first marriage to Mary Dowling. Since he seems to remain in Knox Co OH for a number of years, I do not believe that the referenced brother is the younger Victor.

The 1910 Philadelphia PA census notes that it is a second marriage for both Victor and Elizabeth (nee Holmes) and that they have been married for 11 years. Elizabeth is noted as having three surviving children at that time. I am working the idea that the brother is one of these children.

I can not find Victor or Elizabeth or William in the 1900 census and was hoping that with one additional child's name to search for, I might be able to locate them.

Of course, the census notations could be wrong but I have nothing else to start with. I could not locate a marriage record for Victor and Elizabeth in Allegheny Co PA.

I am researching the HOLMES family of which Elizabeth is a member. Her parents are John B Holmes and Susan Shook of Allegheny Co PA.

BLAKLEY in Berlin NJ in 1946

William R BLAKLEY (formerly of Chester PA) died in Buffalo, Erie Co, NY on October 8, 1946. In a brief obit in the Chester PA newspaper, it was noted that he was survived by a brother in Berlin NJ, but no name was given.

I would like to identify this brother. It may be that he was born before 1894 in the Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co, PA area to an UNK BLAKLEY and Elizabeth HOLMES (they may have married about 1880). The father may have died or his parents divorced as the mother married a Victor REFELD about 1900 and William, Elizabeth, and Victor are living in Philadelphia PA by 1910.

I'm afraid I won't be of much help, but like you I'm seeking any information regarding a Potts connection in Camden, NJ who then moved on to the Luzerne/Lackawanna Co area of Pennsylvania. My information is "sketchy" at best, this is what I've located:
Great grandmother: Amanda C. Potts, b. July 1839 in PA and living in Philadelphia for 1900 Census - (Amanda's parents unknown at this time). During the 1900 Census, Amanda C. Pott's was living with her daughter, Catherine West Potts, my grandmother, who was born in Philadelphia,PA on June 20, 1872. and my grandfather.

Catherine West Potts married Andrew Jackson Kingston, b. March 11, 1870 in Philadelphia. They were married in Camden, NJ on May 23, 1890 according to LDS information (this was a surprize to me as previous information indicated they were married in Philadelphia). However, with Camden being across the river it seemed logical that my grandmother may have married in the home area of Potts relatives.

I know my grandmother had a brother, Charles Potts, who lost an arm working on the railroad. The 1900 census placed Amanda living with Andrew and Catherine Potts Kingston on Sixth Street/Avenue, Philadelphia, PA. It also listed Amanda as having born 6 children, 4 of whom were living in 1900 at which time Amanda was 60 years old. Therefore, two of Amanda C. Potts' children would have been Catherine West Potts Kingston and Charles Potts. There was a cousin, Laura Shone, and a photo lists her mother as Pauline, which would seem to be Pauline Potts, perhaps Amanda's third child. I've never yet found more information than that regarding Amanda C. Potts. But based on the marriage information, I've searched Camden, NJ directories for 1887-91 and found an Albert, Frank E., Henry, Howard C., J. Bordley, Robert B, Sallie H., Sara P. (listed as the widow of Robert B), William J., Frank A., Henry, John B., Robert B., only on the 1888, 1889 directories at 529 Cooper St) all with the surname Potts in Camden, NJ.

Knowing that my grandparents (Andrew Jackson and Catherine West Potts Kingston) moved from Philadelphia to Scranton, PA between 1900-03, I began searching in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, PA area. In Scranton I found a Kate B. Potts on the 1890, 91 and 92 census substitute. She was a stenographer. Also a Herman Potts, tailor, in Scranton, in 1892. A David Potts, laborer, in 1892 and a David P. Potts, miner, in 1889 in Wilkes-Barre, PA. There was also a Laura Potts, clerk, at 53 Sullivan St, Wilkes-Barre, PA in 1892. Unfortunately, this list does not have the name Joseph - but perhaps he was still in Canada at that time?

You seem to have quite a bit of information regarding Joseph Potts' emigration, etc. I'm going to list my grandparent's childrens' names...Florence May, Pauline L, Lucius Henry, Gertrude, Laura Sylvia, Anna Amelia, Catherine West, Ruth Fanchon, Andrew Jackson, Charles Teese, and David Engran (all of their surnames were Kingston), but do any of these names sound familiar? I never heard what brought my Potts/Kingston family from Philadelphia to Scranton, but it seems plausible that they may have had relatives living in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, PA area. They are listed in Scranton, PA by the 1910 Census.

This would really be searching only memory, but I think it's possible that Amanda C. Potts' mother's name was Amelia. I would be very interested in any additional information you may be able to provide. And I'll continue to look for Joseph Potts while I'm searching to find Amanda C. Potts.
