Your best bet is probably to get his death certificate. They usually contain the name of the cemetery, or at least you'll have a place and date so you can get an obit.

If you live in NJ, you can do this yourself at the Archives in Trenton. If you are not in NJ, you will have to have someone search for it or request by mail. If you want information on doing this, email me directly. (I do not live in NJ so I cannot do this for you. This is not a solicitation for business.)

Sharon Meeker
sharonmeeker@bellsouth.net

My great grandfather, John Burns, married Mary Carolyn Zeliff, died in Essex County probably late in 1889. The inventory for his estate was taken May 22, 1890. Is there any way that I can find out in which cemetery he is buried? I have searched everywhere I could think of and written letters and e-mails. No luck. Any ideas would be great. There is a chance he might be buried in Passaic County but no luck there either.

SPRINGER, William ~ Will of 1769

I have the will of William Springer of Elizabeth, Essex Co. There are some names I'd like Essex Co. researchers to verify as being there (in other words, I'm not sure if I transcribed them correctly). From my post on the OLIVER board:

Henry Frazee
Timothy Craig
John Olliver Junior
Daniel ?
Philip Porter
Abraham Clark
Samuel Olliver
Jonathan Olliver Junior
Henry Norris

I still don't have all the words figured out and I will have to get someone to proof read it for me, someone who has done early NJ wills etc. I am hoping someone from the NJ list I'm on will do that.

I am asking a favor from the Essex Co board, if everyone would please look at the list of above names and see if any are recognized. The 'Daniel' above appears to have a surname starting with 'T', could be Tenill??? There is the 'T', then 2 or 3 short letters (no tails) and then 1 or 2 tall letters :)

Note all the OLIVER names are sometimes spelled Olliver. Nothing is left to any of these names, they are either the previous owners of land that William Springer obtained, or witnesses. Again, the will doesn't mention any children, William leaves everything to his wife and church.

I wrote Essex County jail because I was looking for his records- maybe had a picture when he was booked, but received no answer. Hope these posts give us some resources.

Re: Stephen Smith & Ann Killoran, Essex Co 1880s

NJ vital records are not on Ancestry for the time periods you need.

Suggest you start with trying to find World War I and World War II draft registrations for all the men born in your family born 1872-1899. Any you find will give you their exact birth dates.

Then try to find any of your family in the Social Security Death Index on Ancestry (for deaths that might have occurred in the 1960's or later). With exact birth dates for men, you may be able to match some up. This will help you sort out "your" Smiths from many others.

Example: World War I Draft Registration (filed in 1917) on Ancestry shows

James Gregory Smith born 14 July 1888. Living at 22 Mt. Vernon Ave. Orange, single. Working for Erie Rail Road.

World War II Draft Registration (filed 1942) on Ancestry shows

James Gregory Smith born 14 July 1888. Living at 258 1/2 Glenwood Ave. East Orange. Wife Bertha J. Smith.

Social Security Death Index on Ancestry shows: James Smith born 14 July 1888. Died May 1965. His SS# was issued through railroad board.

If you did not have the exact birth date for your James Smith, there is no way you could pick out the right man on the Social Security Death index. Too many James Smiths!

I note that the 1900 census gives James Smith's birth date as July 1887. It is not uncommon for birth dates to be off a year. The advantage of the WWI and WWII Draft Registrations for men is that they completed these forms themselves, so the dates are more likely to match other records. Also, you get a day -- not just a month and year.

I suggest you try this process for all the men in the family (including husbands of the Smith women).

For all the women (and men born later than 1899) try to find them in the Social Security Death Index with the information you have from census records, etc.

You can also try www.findagrave.com to see if there are gravestones for any of your family listed. This is a free site.

Keep good track of every snipet of info you find. Note how important it was that you had the street address for the Smith family in the 1920 census. That allowed me to find the correct James Smith in the example above.

Ancestry does have city directories for Newark and probably Orange for a long range of years. You may be able to estimate marriage and death dates (also wives names) from the 1930s-40's city directories.

And don't forget Google. Enter as complete a name or name combination as you have -- maybe combined with some other terms and see what turns up.

Once you get some death dates. Try finding obits. Obits for this area may have appeared in the Newark papers or sometimes even the New York Times. You will probably have to pay for these or pay for someone to get them for you if you live far away. Also, as you find more information on your family, keep your eye on the "Member Connect" service of Ancestry and/or do periodic searches to see if someone else is working on the same family. They may have information that you don't have.

As for marriage information, you can estimate marriage dates from census records if the dates fell in that time frame.

If you think you need death certificates or marriage licenses for family members, these can be located by someone who can search at the NJ State Archives. There are several people who offer this service. You will need reasonable date estimates to order these certificates. You can also get them through Family History Center microfilm rental, but it may take several films to find what you need.

I am working on a similar project for another family. This is a process that takes time and many steps. But, after all, it's the investigating and discovery that is the real fun!

Good luck with your search
Sharon Meeker

Hi Darlene,

I am pretty sure I am from the line you are looking for.

Below is some history.

I am the grandson of Leodore Boucher and Lucia Lucille (Rouillard) Boucher. My name is Peter Marcel Boucher. My grandparents were from New Hampshire and spoke French. Their oldest daughters, Theresa Boucher Paskas, Angie Boucher Gonzalez, and Irene Boucher McCarrick spoke French as children. They moved to Newark, NJ and had 4 boys, Joseph Roland Boucher, Joseph Paul Boucher, Maurice Joseph Boucher, and my father, Marcel Joseph Boucher.

Joseph Roland Boucher passed away when I was young(8)and is buried in Holy Cross Cemetary in North Arlington. I know he came back suddenly before he passed away.

My father, Marcel, passed away in 1993 at age 59. I live in Whitehouse Station, NJ with two boys - Shane Marcel Boucher and Kyle Roger Boucher.

My oldest aunt, Terry, age 86 has alheimer's and is in a nursing home. Aunt Angie lives down the shore and Aunt Irene is in East Brunswick. Uncle Paul moved to Arizona and is close to Aunt Terry's son out there. Uncle Maurice lives in Kearny. There are many cousins and second cousins. I am 39 years old, second youngest of the first cousins. My cousin Ron is the youngest at age 37 and there are older cousins-their ages range into the 60's. Second cousins are in their 30's and younger.

We are on facebook and hope you can find us there and we can share pictures if you believe we are related. We were always told Roland had children but never knew who they were or if they lived in the area. Apparently he lost touch with his family for a while and came home before he passed away - he was dying of cancer.

My mother remembers a daughter named Linda.

I found your post totally by accident searching under Roland's name on Google. I see it was a few years ago already. Although are more recents ones from this one.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Peter Boucher

Hi
There is a Joseph Warren (right age) in the 1881 census of Canada from PEI (Lot 59). His wife is listed as Jane Warren (age is off a couple years). Some children listed (not 12). They show up again in the 1891 Census as living in Charlottetown. He is listed as a policeman. I was unable to track them in the 1901 census because there is alot or searching in that database. Anyway, it may be worth a look. Good luck

Hello Javier,

It's very nice to meet you. I guess we're distant cousins!

I didn't know about the Argentine connection until now. My mother was not close to her family, unfortunately, therefore I didn't know them. Her grandmother (I believe it was JD McClean's wife Mary) raised her as a child - rather than her father/mother Melton or Jo. She called Mary "Nanny" and I remember she talked alot her when she talked about her childhood.

I guess Nancy Ann would be Mom's ggrandmother. I will have to ask her if she new Nancy or remember's the Argentine connection. My mother is still living in Georgia not far from me.

Thank you for your post.

Cathy McCleskey
Marietta, Georgia

Thanks, I did see alot of your McClean pictures, but I know my mother (Josephine's daughter) would love to have some. Josephine divorce Melton when my mother was a baby, she then remarried someone name "Johnny Lane" (my mother thinks!) I've tried to find them in the census but have had no luck. I am in touch with Melton Arnett Jr.'s (Mom's brother who I never knew) daughter. She was close to Jo, but we (my sister's and I) never really knew her. She died in 1960.

I am looking for information on a JESSE IDLE FOUT. He was born July 1883 in Syracuse, NY to a Charles and Mary Anne (Ihorn) Fout. He married Emily Mae Moore who was born July 1884 in Connecticut. I found a date of death
for Emily Fout to be Feb 1977 in Roseland, NJ but have not been able to find a date of death for Jesse Fout. Their last know place of residence was Roseland, Essex Co., New Jersey in 1942. If anyone can help me find a date
of death for Jesse Fout, I would really appreciate it. I am trying to verify marriage information for the following people:
HENRY PETER TOBY
PAULINE RUTH DIETZE
I am informed that they were married in the City of Newark, but the best information I can get on a date is "the middle 40's (1940 -1949).
I was told I could send a query to Trenton, NJ and they could do a search but it would be $25.00 for the first search and then $1.00 for each succeeding search. Since I am retired and on a fixed income, I am trying to hold my expenses down. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Bob in Sacramento, CA

I am the grandson of Helena or as I knew her Helen Grimm Marutzky who married Paul Marutzky from Germany. Helen had four children, Paul, my father, Elsie, Marie and Helen who died in her twenties. I am very close to the surviving child Joan Laine Hammond. There were some more children besides what you listed. There was Wendell, John, and Thomas. John had three daughters to my knowledge that are still alive. My wife found this post since by coinsidence, I tried to call john's youngest girl Gail today to explore some of our family history but didn't get through. I believe Maria anna is who i call my Aunt Mabel who married lester Wanderer but had no children. I am very close to the surving grandchildren of Joseph Grimm, the son. If you are still out there I will try to give you all the information I know. Bob

P.S. I have a picture of my Great grandfather Schmidt, but it doesn't have a first name on it.

Hi Cathy,

Check out my ancestry.com page......I found the engagement and wedding announcements of Jo. It says that her mother was Mrs. John C. Lane (so your mother has a great memory!)

I also posted the pictures from the newspaper.

This is fun.

Do you know the last name of Aunt Gerry and husband Vick? That would help me track them down too.

Thanks, Melanie

Cathy, I have some great pictures of your McLean ancestors. They have an interesting history (moved to Argentina to homestead, then came to Texas). If you want to know more, then let me know. I will also introduce you to a McLean researcher from Argentina.
