Dear David,
I’ve noticed your interest in the Carman family, and I’m hoping you can fill in a few gaps for me. I’m am trying to trace my husband’s family who came from Boonton. His GG Grandfather was Nicholas W Stagg whose daughter Margaret married Lewis Carman. Nicholas has proved to be a brick wall despite many years of trying to work out his parentage. Other researchers have suggested he was orphaned at a young age or lost contact with his family. There have also been suggestions he was Indian or mulatto. While this would be welcomed, there is no obvious evidence of this in my husband’s family, but who knows? I have also been unable to determine the fate of Nicholas’ other daughters – Hattie b abt 1848, Jane or Jennie abt 1853, Caroline or Carrie abt 1843 and Lucy b 1855. It may be that they died relatively young but they were all living in 1870 before Nicholas and his wife Deborah Demouth relocated to Manistee Michigan with their three sons – James Monroe, William Demouth and John Losaw. It is also possible these girls may have married either before their parents relocated or after in Manistee but before the 1880 census.
I’m also wondering about the relationship of the Carmans to the Hill family. Could Nicholas W Hill be named for Nicholas W Stagg? Long shot! Nicholas’ Hill’s mother is Priscilla Losaw a relative of Deborah Demouth’s mother, Elizabeth Losaw, who married James Demouth.
Hoping you can you can add a little to our tree - Anne
