Nicholas HILL, son of Ezra and Pricilla HILL, married Mary Carman, daughter of Samuel and Martha (Mead) Carman. Nicholas has been listed as black, mulatto and white on the different Census schedules. They resided in Boonton, and Stoney Brook/Waughaw. Nicholas was a Veteran of the Civil War, and was a Corporal in a special group that was designated as Company K, D.C. Infantry. He died while trying to navigate over a railroad track, tripped and fell. His body was interred in a Poorhouse Cem. somewhere in PA. Oral tradition in the family has it that Nicholas Hill, was INDIAN...his father being Indian and mother was white. Does anyone have any connection to the Hills that resided in Boonton/Rockaway/Pequanonk area, that has heard the family was part Indian? Nicholas' grandfather was William Hill, and had an uncle by that name as well.
