While reviewing some old posts I noticed that there was much interest and some confusion about the Sandy Hill Cemeteries. Sandy Hill was a complex of cemeteries founded by various religious denominations in Paterson. At the time Sandy Hill was founded, cemeteries were not permitted in Paterson proper. Sandy Hill was considered then to be on the outskirts of town. During the decline of the cemeteries, many families removed their loved ones to other cemeteries in the area - namely Cedar Lawn, in Paterson and Laurel Grove, in Totowa. In about 1910, when Sandy Hill was finally condemmed, the City of Paterson removed the remaining burials to either Cedar Lawn or Laurel Grove. The Passaic County Historical Society has a list of the removals performed by the City of Paterson; the cemeteries also should have information about the re-interments. Hope this information helps.
