I did some research into your Samuel McNeil and have determined that he died in 1902 and is buried at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Totowa.

I also found a Civil War pension file card for him which will help you get his pension file from the National Archives.

If you let me have your e-mail address, I will send you the pension card directly.

Sharon Meeker
sharonmeeker@bellsouth.net

I hope this message reaches you because I am researching Margaret and Alexander the grandchildren of Margaret Hawk m. to Jacob Welter. Hattie, their mother, married Thomas Kirkwood from Scotland. His relative, David Kirkwood of Stranraer, Scotland, is researching his family tree and I am helping him from the U.S. I cannot find any trace of either Margaret or Alexander as adults and would appreciate your sharing this information with David who is from Thomas' line. My e-mail is "thecowgate@yahoo.com." Martha Howe. (I am related to David but not on the Kirkwood side.

Hi Neil:

I have seen Pleasant and Welcome as male. I agree about spelling of Francis vs. Frances, but wouldn't take this too seriously especially on census records.
Re: John West and Elizabeth Casly? I guess she is the one who died 28 December 1885, buried at Moravian in Hope. Her age was listed as 68 years, but I looked at the photo of the stone and it looks more like 88 to me. That would make her born c. 1797. This same woman was age 63 apparently next door to John and Rebecca West in 1860 and also next door to Henry Nulton and Barbary (b. 1801) West. If this is the woman you want you can get her death certificate.

http://www.state.nj.us/state/darm/links/databases.html

I could not read gravestone for John. Don't know what church might have on burial records or what they might tell you. You can try Warren County Historical Society in Belvidere. They have a good collection. Don't know now if there is anyone who would be willing to search records for you.

Be sure to check this site.

There is good info here and compiler has WEST ancestors, apparently including John and Rebecca.

Sharon

I have been researching some Ohio ancestors from the mid 19th century and the following names comes up- Welcome, Pleasant, and Francis. I feel without knowing why that Pleasant would be a man and Welcome a woman, and Francis spelled that way is masculine and that Frances is feminine. In your opinion, am I right about Welcome and Pleasant?

I have not located any more marriage records, but have found better dates for some of your couples.

John C. West b. c. 1822, Maria b. c. 1828. marr c. 1842, both buried at Green Chapel Cemetery in Knowlton. (find-a-grave)
Thomas West 1790-1845 and Mary Vankirk 1800-1876 also buried at Green Chapel. Probably would have married before 1825. Check Sussex Co.

Joseph West (b. c. 1817) and Rachel (b. c. 1825) Not sure from census, but might have been married as early as 1838, but in any case by 1850.

John West and Elizabeth Casly? Don't know. Need better date estimates.

Nathan Cooke b. c. 1808 and Barbara West (died 21 June 1847 age 29, b. c. 1819). Buried at Marksboro. This is right on Sussex Co. line, so try there. prob marr in 1830's.

Check out the links that I gave to Neil on this same thread for more info on these families. The one site has Warren Co. newpapers, births, cemeteries etc.

Also check out Easton Library site I mentioned to him for church records/marriages. These couples might have married in Pennsylvania.

If you have any more info on any of these couples, I'll see what else I can do.

Sharon Meeker
West of Knowlton to Margaret Mullen of Knowlton 29 June 1839
Parmelia Ann West to John A. Weller 25 Feb 1836 (no town given)
Rachel S. West of Knowlton to Abraham S. Howell of Oxford 15 Nov. 1832
Sarah West of Harmony to George Osborn of Greenich 17 Jan 1852
Thomas West of Hope to Elsa Margaret Carcuff of Knowlton 5 Feb 1852 by Rev. Geo. Banghart

Any Hope/Blairstown marriages before 1825 would have been recorded in Sussex Co.
Oh and I should have said I looked at the New Jersey site and found a civil birth record for Susan Ludwig, daughter of Jacob Ludwig and Ester (though the name was spelled LUDIING) on 13 July 1849. There were no other children listed for Jacob or Esther after that. I hope I didnt miss any. They must have moved back to Northampton after that and maybe some were born there but I dont think they kept civil records. yes, and too bad there was no Jacob to be found in the 1860 census. Oh well, maybe they were out for a walk when the census taker came.

Neil

I had Hagermans in Northampton County, PA who moved to Ohio, then Indiana. The earliest I have is Isaac Hagerman (b. about 1790 in PA, d. about 1846 in Van Wert Co., Ohio). He was married to Elizabeth Hoppes (b. 1793 in PA, d. 1879 in Kosciusko County, IN). Their children were: Jacob, William, Barnett, Isaac, Mary "Polly" Groscost, Elizabeth Harvey, Sarah "Sally" Markey, Ester, and Catherine "Kate" Shaffer. Jacob and Isaac both had sons named Adam, so I've wondered if this is a family name.

I'd love to know if you or anyone connects to my family.

Thanks, Joan Hostetler

This is funny but I 'live' in the past so much I didn't even realize this marriage took place more than 50 years ago and would be considered a genealogy request! lol Too bad I can't afford the $25!

I contacted the library and they sent my request to the historical society. The person there actually knew my cousins but not the grandparents I'm researching. I haven't heard back from him since I explained who I was talking about.

It could have been in a church or not. It was a second marriage for both. It would probably have been a Methodist, Reformed, or Bible-believing Protestant church, if it was.

My grandfather's name was Irving S. Harrison and my step-grandmother was Etta H. (Pettit) (Lamberson) Harrison. I have both of their obituaries but they don't say when they got married.

It's important to me because my mother was in foster care from about age 3 until this marriage took place, after which she and many of her siblings were returned to live with their father and new step-mother. I'm trying to piece together a timeline of my mother's early life.

I will give the Hackettstown clerk's office a call and see if I can find out anything from there.

Thank you for the offer to go in person for me. I'll let you know.
Jo

Dear Mr. MacAvoy~

I wondered if you had any Civil War information regarding my G-Uncle Elijah/Elisha Hamler/Homler?

He entered the Civil War underage, as a drummer. He obviously died but I don't know if he was killed in action or just came home and got sick before the Census of 1870 where he seems to cease to exist on paper.

The last Census I have for him is the Census of 1860 when he was living in Newton twp., Sussex County, NJ with his mother, "Henrietta Homler" (really Noyetta Hamler) as the head of the house. I tried to get Civil War records for him from Washington D.C. but they said they had none. (I gave Washington D.C. his real name "Elijah" but two Census records have him down as "Elisha" and I keep wondering if in their search for him, Washington would have included the spelling "Elisha.")

He was born in 1845 and I have him in the Census records for 1850 and 1860, Sussex County, NJ.

I understand that you have Civil War information for New Jersey. I would appreciate any help or direction that you might have to give. I know that my father, who knew little of his Hamler family because his father died young and he grew up with his mother's side of the family, remembered a conversation he had with his Dad about his dad's older brother "Lige." (Elijah/Elisha Hamler.) The info was what I have given you. I can't help but wonder if the memory stood out so much because Elijah was killed in the war. From my genealogy research I know that my Dad had 3 Uncles who served in the Civil War from New Jersey but my father only knew about Elijah. Hence my thinking that Elijah must have died. But I can't find any paperwork about this.

Can you help?

Kathleen
LPurch663@aol.com

>>Lincoln pardoned all the "deserters" just before he was killed, so that term doesn't carry the weight it might have otherwise.<<

Oh, my gosh, I didn't know this! And from Andrew's correspondence with Washington D.C.... well, it must have meant something to him.

Thank you for reminding me about the "Alias" thing.

Bob, you've been exceedingly gracious to me and a tremendous help.
Thank you so much, Bob... And please thank your friend too.

I was wondering... Since Elijah Hamler had 3 older brothers who had also gone into the war, could Elijah have just informally found one of his brothers on the field and they handed him a drum without formality or "signing up"? Perhaps Elijah was killed before much paperwork could be done? (He was 15 years old.)

Elijah's brothers were
1.) William H. Hamler with Company K 9, Regiment NJ 50 Volunteers
2.) (James) Edward Hamler with Company K, 9th New Jersey Infantry Regiment, and...
3.)Andrew H. Hamler, Co A, 27th Reg't NJ Vol.
(Their cousin, Abner Hamler, was also with Company A, 27th Infantry.)

I would think that on the battlefield, things would get fairly messed up, with records gone out the window many times. In fact, my G-Uncle Andrew H. Hamler fought the U.S. Govt all his life because they had him listed as a "deserter" and his claim was that he had gone to get medical treatment on the field and the doctor told him to "go home." His gravestone has his Company number on it.
It was obviously a matter of honor to him...

Thank you again-- and all the others who helped...
Kathleen Hamler Purchase
LPurch6636@aol.com

Seek where Jehila A. Anderson is buried, bur. bet 1900 - 1950

Although she was born, raised and bore her only son Aaron F. Fullington (b. 1849) in New Jersey, my G-Aunt Jehila A. (Hamler) (Fullerton)Anderson lived the last 30 years of her life in Monroe County, PA. I just found where her 2nd husband, James Anderson, is buried in Monroe Co., PA, and Jehila is not anywhere to be seen in death records in Monroe County. This makes me think that she might be buried where her family came from, either Sussex,Warren, Morris Counties, New Jersey. She died 1900 - 1905. She died previous to husband James but was listed in the Smithfield twp, Monroe Co, PA Census of 1900.

The Hamlers-- Jehila's maiden name-- were very longterm residents in New Jersey starting in 1718.

Jehila (occasionally mispelled as Gehila)was born in NJ in 1830. I have record of the place where her parents, the Hamlers, are buried and several of her 9 siblings are buried: Tranquility Methodist Cemetery, Tranquility Cemetery, Newton Cemetery and Spruce Grove Cemetery, Coosbaugh Twp, all Sussex Co, NJ.

According to her brother James Edward Hamler's Pension record, he died in East Stroudsburg, Monroe Co., PA; but all of the other siblings lived and died Sussex County, NJ with occasional residences in Warren Co, NJ and Morris Co., NJ.

I would appreciate any help or logic to figure out why Jehila Anderson is not buried with her son and family in Monroe County, PA (they are buried at St. Paul's Cemetery, Paradise twp., Monroe Co., PA) and where she might be buried in Sussex Co., NJ.

Many thanks,
Kathleen Hamler Purchase
LPurch6636@aol.com

Hi Neil:

Here is the web site for the Marx Room, Easton Library. Note online indexes.

http://www.eastonpl.org/MarxRoom.htm

Here is link for Warren Co. Library Local History. I found an entry for obit for Mrs. Ludwig in 1855. Don't know if this is connected to your family.

http://www.warrenlib.com/warrenlib/local_history/localhome.h...

You can get a copy of this by requesting it (and perhaps sending SASE and/or $1.00 or 2.00 donation.)

I checked my Warren Co. marriages book. No Lud* or Lod* tha might be Ludwig/Lodwick, etc.

Found the following records online. I imagine you have all of this, but just in case --

1870 Lafayette Ludwig in Harmony Township, Warren Co.
1880 "" "" in Allen Township, Northhampton Co.
1890 "" "" "" "" veterans census. Served in 90th PA Inf. Co. G
Find-a-grave, Greenwood Cemetery, Howertown, PA graves for Lafayette and his wife (with her maiden name). Lafayette: 13 March 1840 - 26 May 1896. Includes picture of gravestone.

I have been to that cemetery several times. Very nice and quiet.

I also tried to find Lafayette in 1860, so far without success. Since he joined PA CW unit in 1862, he was probably living on PA side then, but even that is not certain.

Lots of families moved back and forth across the Delaware River. Easton was a big town compared with what was nearby in NJ.

Although I used to live in Warren Co., I moved to KY a few years ago. So I remember some of the sources etc., but no longer have hands-on access.

Remember that if you are looking for anything in Warren Co. before 1825, it was part of Sussex Co.

If there is anything else you think I can help you with (long-distance!), let me know.

Sharon Meeker
KY

Hello:

I don't know of church records online, but try "Knowlton" and "church" in google search.

Check out this web site.

http://www.raub-and-more.com/default.html

I don't think all births are listed, but there are some for Knowlton. New Jersey CIVIL birth records (kept by state) started in 1848. That is what is indexed/listed on this site.

Also note newspaper items and links to cemeteries.

NJ Archives indexed marriages for 1848-1878, also deaths fro 1878 to 1885.

http://www.state.nj.us/state/darm/links/databases.html

You can send for actual entry/certificate for an item that interests you. Note that marriages prior to 1878 are unlikely to list parents, though some do.

Knowlton Presbyterian Cemetery is online at Find-a-grave

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=10...;

I compiled Warren Marriages book 1824-1857 and will check that for you if you give me names.

Are you from the Easton/Warren Co. area?

Sharon Meeker

We have no proof or viable leads on our Aaron. Some theorys show him as actually named Asa.
Thanks for the addition information on the John G. Johnson married to Lydia J. Taylor on 10 Feb 1830. This could possibly be the John C. Johnson I am looking for. Were they both from Oxford?

Interesting the additional names you state that lived in Oxford, Oakland Co, Michigan.

In the 1850 Oakland County, Avon, Michigan Census there were a couple of Farnsworths's that lived with John C. Johnson - 36; Sophia (2nd wife who John married in 1843, Oxford, Oakland Co, MI) - 27; Jeremiah (my 2nd Great Grandfather)- 14; Susana - 11; John - 6; Deodale - 2; Agusta Farnsworth - 14 and Delia Farnsworth - 12).

I have not been able to figure out how the Farnsworth were related to my Johnson family - and my thought was possible John's first wife's maiden name was Farnsworth. But with this new information on Lydia Taylor, I am just not sure. I will have to search the NJ Census further.

Thanks for your help.
Ronda

Do you have any confirmation of Eli's parents?
Anything is possible, but my bet is that if he enlisted at all it was under an alias. If he was killed or died during the war then the family wouldn't know who to look for unless they knew his alias.

I found this NJ muscian for example:

Elisha Ayres, Residence was not listed; Enlisted on 7/13/1863 as a Bugler. On 9/13/1863 he mustered into "E" Co. NJ 2nd Cavalry. He died of disease on 1/24/1864 at Union City, TN (Died of chronic diarrhea)

(Buried at Mound City National Cemetery, IL; grave #3, 076, sec. C)

Could he be yours? You never know.

Lincoln pardoned all the "deserters" just before he was killed, so that term doesn't carry the weight it might have otherwise.

Bob

A second e mail will answer your questions more fully. No, Im not from Warren or Easton but Little Rock, Arkansas. And the only marriages that probalby took place in Warren Co would be the oldest children of Jacob and Ester named William born 1835 and Anna Mariah born 1839. If the family stayed in Warren Co long after the 1850 census they could have been married between 1855 and 1859.

Thanks again,

Neil

Thank you so much. The family crossed the border every now and then and Im interested in the years 1841 to 1858 in Warren County. They were in Plainfield, Northampton County which was thie county or origin and home base and they are listed there in the 1840 census and in Knowlton, Warren Co, NJ for the 1850 census. I have not been able to find them in the 1860 census. The family was LUDWIG and the head was Jacob and wife Esther, both born in Pennsylvania in 1808 and 1809 respectively. Your site did have the birth of their youngest daughter Susan in Knowlton July 13, 1849, for which I thank you. She was only listed as as 0 years in the 1850 census. Lol

The speeling of such a common name is alwasy different. The parents were listed as Ludiing in the birth of daughter Susan and in the 1850 census Ludewig and Ludwich in 1840 census. Maybe under the 1860 he has a spelling permutation that I havent used. groan.....

As I said Im mainly interested in the births of any more children for Jacob and Sether LUDWIG in Knowlton in the 1850's and finding his whereabouts and that of his son(my ancestor) Lafayette in 1860.

Thanks again for the info. Ill take time now to go thourgh it more thoroughly.

Neil

Are there good Reformed or Lutheran Church records online for Knowlton, Warren County. I have just discovered that my Pennsylvania Dutch family was fond of crossing back and forth from Northampton County PA to Knowlton, Warren County every ten years or so. Quite odd. Are there birth records for the period 1840-1870?

Thank you

Neil
