Poinier Family in Newark/Essex Co early and mid 1800s

I am researching my ancester Lewis Poinier who lived along the Hudson Valley from 1803 until his death in Philadelphia in 1836. Mostly he lived in Albany. I have noticed a significant group of Poiniers in the general vicinity of Newark and I am trying to determine if he was related. Since that is a very uncommon name, and since water was the main highway back then I thought it was possible. Thank you.
