I know of no connection to Baltimore, but Simon THURNBACH (later TURNPAW) was born 6 May 1770 and was baptized in Salem County, NJ, by the Priest from Old St. Joseph's RC Church in Philadelphia. He is the son of Christian (not Christopher) THURNBACH and Susanna Catharine GEIGER. Susanna Catharine in the daughter of Matthias GEIGER (this surname later evolved to KIGER in Salem County) and Anna Mary (HALTER) GEIGER who immigrated to Salem County in 1738 from Lembach, Alsace, France. Simon was named for Susanna's maternal grandfather back in Alsace: Simon HALTER, a master glassblower at the Mattshall, Alsace Glasshutte.

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~geiger/webpages/henr...

Joan

William Watson, b NJ 1794, d IL 1874

I am looking for parents’ names and a hometown for William Weldon Watson, born Apr 1, 1794 in New Jersey. One source gives his county of birth as Sussex. He left NJ about 1817 and traveled to Lexington, KY where he married Maria Cape Humrickhouse. They moved to Nashville, TN and had five children: Benjamin, Abigail, Ann Maria, Hester Cape, and Cordelia before the first wife died in 1834. He moved his family to St. Louis and then to Springfield, IL by 1836 where they remained. He later married Sarah Wiley Mottashed in 1842.
The only other clue I have for his family in NJ is relatives in Springfield – a nephew, James LaForest King (son of James and Charity Watson King). So, William may have had a sister named Charity. Another apparent relative in Springfield was Watson King (relationship unknown) also born in NJ.
Some ancestry trees give his father as Samuel Watson, son of Benjamin Watson and Martha Roberts Evans. These trees state this Samuel married Elizabeth Weldon who died in 1794, the year our William was born. But, no sources are given for this info in any of these trees and I have not been able to confirm it. I have found other NJ marriage records for a Samuel Watson in that time period, but none to an Elizabeth Weldon.
Can anyone help?
Thanks, Beth
My great great grandfather is dubois simerson 1821-1865 lived in wisconsin. In all the of documents, Dubois says he is born in New Jersey. He named his son Barnett, possible after a family member.

I did find an earlier document where Dubois is with an Olive simonson born in 1774. Not sure why it is so hard to find info on them.

Help with death record access in Trenton

Hi.

I am wondering if there is anyone who visits the Vital Records office with any regularity who might be willing to check on something for me?

I am trying to determine if the death of a relative took place in NJ - her records cannot be found in PA and I suspect she may have died in New Jersey with burial occurring in PA. There was a six day lag between the death and burial, so a longer transport of the body seems plausible.

I understand that the Archives holds microfilm copies of deaths from 1901-1940. I live in OR, so popping into the office is not an option.

Here are the relevant details:

Deceased:
Bridget Martin (nee McCarthy)
DOD: 21 Feb 1936
Born in Ireland: Sometime around 1865 - give or take...
Address in PA - Strawberry Mansion
Burial: Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, PA. (27 Feb 1936)

Husband's name: James Martin

My sincere gratitude to anyone who might be able to help.

Joann Taylor

Sorry for being so slow to read this. I'm very interested in this article. Do you happen to know the name of the paper it was in or where all of this happened. I wrote the first message while recoving from sever illness and now noticed I made several mistakes in it. Irt just might be possible that tghis Lucas Van Buskirk Sn. could be the father of my Luke Van Buskirk. We have no other information on our Luke and Lucas that we can verify that is why I am so very interested in any information that we may obtain. My cousin's daughter is now taking over this side of our family history. I'm willing to share what I do have descending down from Luke and Elizabeth (Maxwell) Van Buskirk. Beth

I am a descendant of a Frank Stanley West and have hit a wall researching past him (my gr-gr-grandfather). He supposedly was born in Newark, New Jersey and migrated to Nebraska ~1890. I have not been able to find any info on him in New Jersey.

Do you happen to have any Frank/Francis West information or have anything on Wests from New Jersey/New York approximately late 1800's?

-Matt

There must be more than one John Romine Riker, because I found an article on one who was born about 1897. Maybe this was "your" John Riker's uncle? (See attached.)

Update: This is John Riker's uncle, but his father is incorrectly listed as George W. Riker -- His father is also named John Riker.

I have 2 marriage register pages from New Jersey - 2 sets of 2xg grandparents, one from 1851 and one from 1856. One has parents listed; the other does not.

I also have the Roman Catholic Church register pages for both - from 2 different Churches. What is in the Civil Register is near exact duplicate of what is in the Church register - one priest captured the name of the parents while the other did not.

If you can find siblings who married after 1878, you'll have a good chance of finding parents on that record.

FamilySearch has many of these records indexed. HOWEVER, please note that the YEAR for any marriage/death entries from January to June is often wrong. The indexers who did this work did pay attention to the fact that the records followed the fiscal year i.e. June 1880 to May 1881. If the first records in the batch were 1880, they entered the 1880 date for all the records. So keep this in mind when you order marriage/death records.

For death records 1878-1888, you can check on the NJ Archives website. Their dates are correct.

Good luck.

Hi Sharon,

Yes, the marriage record I ordered was before 1878. I didn't think about ordering from a sibling and I will try that one. Thank you for recommending that!

Lauren

Generally speaking, marriage licenses after 1878 DO have parents listed.

Marriage records (usually an entry in a record book) before 1878 do not usually have parents listed. However, the marriage records 1848-1878 can still be useful as they usually list the town and minister's name, from which you can often identify the church the family attended.

You may want to get marriage and death records for any known siblings of your target person. Some of those records may contain the information you want.

Hi Ryan,

Yes I have ordered several of those papers and I did find good information on some of them. However, there was 1 of my great great grandfather and it said parents unknown. Very frustrating! I do like that the cemetery is listed on where they were buried and I can go find them. Many of the baby death record had parents listed. The marriage records are not much of a great help since it doesn't list any witness or parents. I had one death record that didn't list the mother maiden name. So it's a gamble to see if you get lucky with the names. I still keep ordering because its more helpful than not. Hope it helps you as well.

Lauren

Ryan

The New Jersey Death Certificates after 1878 have fields for the name of the parents. They are not always used. The person supplying the information in the certificate may not know who the parents were. They are sometimes wrong. The person supplying the information may not have personally known the parents and may be relying on their memory of what someone told them some time ago.

Curt
Lauren,

Did you find the certificate had the parents listed? I had the same question looking at the records on FS and Ancestry for my 4th great grandparents.
