Hi, I hope you have found your family in New Jersey. I went to school with your aunts. Graduated with Estelle Garrigues. Then there was Patty and Edith. Your father once stuffed a fish for me. He did taxidermy work at the time and lived off shore as we called it. Right out of North Wildwood. I spoke with Estelle a couple of years ago and she has had some medical problems. But, I hear she is doing well now. She has two kids and her daughter married into the family that owns the Cowtown rodio auction. That's in Woodstown I believe. From what I here Eddie still lives in the Wildwood area. She had been married to Billy Brunell. He might have died. Good luck in your search.
Re: William J Thompson 1889

I located the following:

1917. William James Thompson b. 10 July 1888 New York City, living in East Newark, Hudson Co., married (WWI Draft Registration)

1920. Living in East Newark with Catherine

1930. Living in Newark with Katherine. Wm said first marriage was at 20 (c. 1908) Katherine said first marr was at 16 (c 1907/8).

However, I found both of them still living with their parents in 1910.

1942. William James Thompson born 10 July 1887. Living at 353 Elm St. Kearny, Hudson Co. Name of person who will always know his address: Mrs. Ellen Drybough same address.

This suggests that he was no longer married to Catherine by 1942, and that he probably was not married to anyone else at this time.

In order to find marriage records in NJ for this period, you really need to know the year or a close estimate. 1940 and before is available at NJ State Archives for personal searching (or you can hire someone to do it). But each year is alphabetized by husband's name.

If you know when Catherine died or whether they divorced and when, that might help narrow the search.

If he was still married when he died, his wife's name should be on his death certificate and probably in an obit.

Sharon Meeker

I just checked my posts today. Sorry for being so late getting back to you.
I, too, have checked the Cape May 1840 U.S. Census and was leaning toward William Stiles as being my great grandfather, Joshua's, father. Also, the names listed (Joshua, William and Thomas) are all names appearing throughout several generations of our Stiles family. I really feel that this is the link to the Stiles that I have been searching for, but I can't be certain. Would you have any further information on whether any marriage records, church records, etc. would exist for Cape May, New Jersey, for the late 1850's. I'm trying to determine if Joshua and Martha were married there before coming to Virginia.

Again, thanks so much for all your time and help.

Think I found what you're looking for. In the 1840 census there are 3 Stiles families living in Middle Twp, Cape May county includin a Joshua Stiles. He's too old for your Joshua but he's probably a uncle. William A Stiles is listed as having a son age 0-5. That son is probably your Joshua. Middle Twp is only about 10 miles wide and between the ocean and Delaware Bay so there's plenty of fishing. Best wishes again.

I am seeking information on my great grandfather and great grandmother who migrated to King William County, Virginia, around 1859. Joshua Stiles was born about 1835 in New Jersey. He was a fisherman and shoemaker and possibly came from a coastal area, not sure of the county. His wife, Martha, was born about 1840, and on the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, they were living in West Point, Virginia, and had one daughter, age one, named Elizabeth.

Anyone having any information at all, please contact me.

Thanks so much.

Hi,

This is a bit of a long shot really.

I am researching my family from Preston in Lancashire, England.

I think the family may have some link to New Jersey, one particular family, that of of John & Ann Rawcliffe. In 1860 Ann gave birth to their 3rd child in State of New Jersey. The family returned to Preston, England in time for the 1861 Census.

I am obviously curious to who and why they where visiting.

If anyone knows anything of a Rawcliffe family with Lancashire, England roots please contact me.

Kind Regards

Kelly

You did it! Many many thanks!!! We finally got something we can go by. My sisters and I have waited so long for a name that might link us to family, you have given us that. I sent for my fathers original ss application years ago and that showed his parents names. I then sent for his mothers ss application and she spelt her name as Sarah Elizabeth Hilderbrant. No doubt the newspaper spelt her first name wrong. I also sent for his death certificate and it also listed his mother with the same spelling. Again many thanks.

Re: PUGH

Don,
Neither the name 'Harold' nor'Emerson' are in any of my Pugh family names.
The locale--near Pittsburgh, is close. My Pughs (Hugh, Peter etc) were in Brooke Co Wv in 1800; then Peter went to Meigs Co Ohio in in1840. So our time lines are off unless Harold's family has been there for 2 centuries.
Thanx for the reply,
Molly
