I have started a tree and I need to clean it up because I have some conflicting information.

Thank you a lot

Rebecca (Beck)

I know that he was murdered about 4-5 weeks before my great grandfather in the spring of 1918 in Catron County near the Reserve area and it was reported in the Socorro newspaper. We just moved, so I don't have any idea where my files are. He was a sheep rancher, I think, and the people charged with his murder were Juan and Ambrosio Carrejo, Candelario Chavez and another man whose name I can't remember at the moment.

If it may help you:
New Mexico death records on familysearch.org show that:
John Thomas Higgins died 13,Dec,1935 in Catron County.
His parents are given as Patrick S.Higgins and Perfecta Sanchez.
He was born Feb.17,1885 probably in Socorro County, which later became parts of Catron County.
The 1900 census of Frisco,Socorro,NM shows:
Higgins,Perfecta-born Apr.1850;50;married 37yrs;16 children born,12 living;born NM,parents same,owner of a farm
daugher-Barbara-born Mar 1881;19;born NM,father born Ireland,mother born NM;dress maker
daughter-Ines-born June 1883;16
son-John T.-born Feb.1885;15
daughter-Rosy T.-born July 1887;12
twins-Emmett and Lissie born Apr 1890,age 10
Patrick Higgins was counted in San Marcial,Socorro,NM-born March 1833;67;married 36yrs;immigrated 1852;born Ireland,parents same;famer
Perfecta is listed with him,but that does not mean she lived there necessarily;also in the home with Patrick,is married daugher Jennie Montoya, born July 1870;29;married 7yrs;2 children. No spouse or children are with her.

Patrick Higgins was enumerated in the Veteran's census of 1890, in Socorro County, having served in two different infantry units in the Civil War between Apr.1861 and Sept.1866.

You might want to wander about in the NM death records here:
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=coll...
There are many records for this family;you can search including parents names etc. with the "advanced search" on the bottom left, but be liberal with spelling;Perfecta is spelled badly on several etc.

Found this bit for the brother of John T.:
"Daniel Higgins, pioneer of Glenwood, Catron county, died Sunday at San Diego, Calif.,he was visiting relatives. He had lived in Catron county throughout his life where he was engaged in ranching for many years and also had business interests at Glenwood where the family is well known. News of his death came in a message from his son Nick Higgins."

In the 1930 census "Johnny Higgins" and wife Sarah live in Mogollon, with children Sybel age 8 and Johnny Jr.age 1; I see a death record for a daughter "Margory" who was born in 1922 and died in Silver City in 1924.

Do you know when he arrived in the US...or how he got to NM? I heard he was conscripted into the Union Army and shipped to NM. Do you have a birth or death certificate for he or wife, Felesita Fagardo? I understand he was buried at the "old Kelley place, off Gut Ache Mesa, just before Alma NM". Any info or stories would be greatly appreciated.
Pamela Hom

Mountain View School and Community Hall

The former schoolhouse at Mountain View on Omega Road, north of US Hwy 60 may be of interest to Catron County, New Mexico researchers.
My uncle, Wayne Orle Macrander, assisted his homesteader neighbors in completing the construction of a Pine log building they had begun the previous fall of 1931, prior to his arrival in the community in 1932. He noticed skid marks where logs had been dragged by a team of horses and pulled from his 640 acre section of newly filed upon mountainous homestead land to the school site about two miles to the southeast.
In 2004, a then elderly gentleman named Wayne who had been named after my uncle, and later attended the log school as a child, related to me how my uncle provided special tools for lap joining and pegging the large diameter logs used to extend the single room building to twice the prvious length after the first season of use. The new room was used among other things, music instruction, led by Floy Elizabeth (Farnsworth), wife of Wayne Orle Macrander, while the other end other end provided classroom space for the one teacher and many students.
The building was also the community gathering place and churches met there as well the 1940s.
In 2004 it was a private residence, owned by a family headquartered in Quemado, NM.
The Mountain View (or Mountainview) locale is north of Omega, a former post office and store site on US Hwy 60 between Quemado and Pie Town. About five miles north and east on a bumpy corridore road. The land for the log hall was donated by Clarence Moore. He also provided water for the school from his well. Mr. Moore later donated a spot for one of the last of the several school teachers, Mr. Baldwin and his family, to build a home on. Mr. Baldwin was also a missionary/preacher and conducted services in the Mountain View community building. Three church denomentations rotated services there every three weeks with a combined service on the fourth Sunday.
Several of the persons who had resided in and around the Mountain View community were buried in the Forest Hill (Taylor) Cemetery to the East. A cousin of Floy Elizabeth (Farnsworth) Macrander is buried at Taylor Cemetery; a Mr. Clarence Claude Crosby, aged 29, who had only arrived from his home near Albion, Nebraska sometime within the previous two years.
Preacher Well, another local landmark, was named after Reverend Tingley, who lived in the area in the early 1930s'.

SALAZAR, CORDOVA, BACA, OR VACA, and especially PELACHE

I am new to genealogy and I love it! When I find a missing piece of the puzzle, I am thrilled! Well, folks, I have not been thrilled in quite some time! Proudly, I can trace my Martinez-Martin-Martin Serrano line back to Jerez de Badajoz, Spain 1464. I was elated to get that far back.

Now I am looking for some other (likely)-founding families of New Mexico by the names of Salazar (and/or de Salazar), Cordova, and Baca (Vaca, perhaps in the Cabeza de Vaca line).

The other surname which may have originated in Montenegro, Czechoslovakia, or the Austrian Empire or some other east European country is: Pelache. It looks like none of those, too.

Now - I have scoured through census records and used several gen sites only to come up with a whole lot of nothing.

Teresa BACA born 1841 married Antonio Jose Martinez, nephew of the famous Padre Martinez. Teresa's mother was Candelaria (no maiden name available) born in NM. Teresa & Antonio's son Malaquias Martinez was my great grandfather. I doubt if Teresa is a C de Vaca but I suppose she could be.

James J SALAZAR (an hispanic with an anglicized name in 19th century New Mexico - WHY??) married Rita CORDOVA. They were the parents of my great grandmother, Matilda Salazar who married Malaquias Martinez.

It appears that Rita Cordova and James Salazar were dead by the time Matilda was 18. In a census record she is listed with her little sister and brother as head of household. Matilda's older sister Josefa married the brother of Malaquias, Carlos. They lived very close by.

Pelache is probably the most difficult. Pete Pelache was born abt 1860, came to USA 1895, married a Mexican born immigrant Amelia (no maiden name, also spelled Emilia) abt 1900. They settled in Cameron County Texas via Pete JR (Pedro, at birth). Oldest son Julio is nowhere to be found. Youngest son Antonio settled in San Jose CA. Finding ancestors for Peter SR is practically impossible. I am very very doubtful that his name is Montenegrin, Serbian, Slavic or Czech. It sounds more Turkish, Italian or even Spanish. It could be spelled phonetically. There was one small family who immigrated to New Mexico from Mexico with the name Pelache. It is spelled like this in the copy of the census record. Lorenzo, Margarita and Mercea PELACHE. I wonder if the Pelaches came to Mexico from Turkey, Italy or Spain via Mexico. There are Pelachi families in Uruguay and Argentina and the surname of Peter and Amelia was spelled Pelachi in the earliest census record.

If anyone could help I would be forever grateful. If anyone needs Martin Serrano info I collect names of siblings in all generations. I have many. Happy ancestor hunting to all.

RMAMARTINEZ@YAHOO.COM

Thank you, Janet. I didn't realize that the book, Dust to Dust was the cemetery book that you were speaking of. I have that book, but it doesn't give a very clear picture of the gravesite. I am hoping to contact someone who has been there and seen it. So far, no luck.
Thank you,
Nancy

This was supposed to have happened on Freeman Mountain, Catron county, NM. There is a date of 1854. I don't know if this is a birthdate or death date.

I would be interested in hearing from you.
Nancy

Hi,
Below is a portion of the letter I sent to Kathyn Roberts about the grave of "Mrs. Brown" who is buried in Pie Town. My husband met Johnny when he was staying with his daughter, Annie Traynor, in Clifton, Arizona. My husband took his father, Charles Francis Brown, to see Johnny at the Traynor's place in Clifton. How glad they were to see each other. Tommy Traynor worked for us on our farm one year.

We would love to hear from you if you'd care to write.

Nancy E. Brown
DelaPlace@gilanet.com

{I noticed that you said you didn’t know anything about the grave of “Mrs. Brown” in the Pie Town Cemetery. Mrs. Brown was the wife of James A, Brown. Mrs. Brown’s name was Martha P. Fancher, born 17 Feb 1857 in Henderson Co. Texas. James was born 29 Aug 1848 in Ms.

The James A. Brown family moved to New Mexico sometime before 1890, as they had a girl born in Magdalena in 1890 and another born in 1894. Altogether they had 6 children. Their first son was John Odis Brown, born in Texas. It was this Brown family that my father in law, Charles Francis Brown of Missouri, took up with when he ran away from home at age 8 years. He lived with them in Palo Pinto County, Texas and came to New Mexico when they moved. The James Brown family was not related to our Brown family, but no one knew but what Charles was their son. Charles and Johnny stayed friends until they died.

John A Brown died 17 Dec 1925 in Tahoka, Texas and Martha P Brown died 23 Jan 1941 in Pie Town, New Mexico}.
The people you listed all matched. Do you know what ranch Edgar and Leslie are buried on? Do you by chance know any of the Reids that are still living? I used to be in contact with my cousin, Lila Reid, but have lost touch with her. And one final question, did you write From The Top Of The Mountain Pie Town New Mexico & Neighbors? My father has a copy and I have searched it really well, but no mention of Reids, only the Thomas' which are another relation. In fact, when my father bought the book we met the writer and got the last copy. However that has been 10+ years ago. We were in Pie Town area for a Thomas family reunion.
