Does anyone know of any publications that deal with the expulsion of families that were living within the Maxwell Land Grant before the the U.S. takeover of New Mexico?
I believe that a number of families were driven from their homes and lands (sometime before 1870) and were forced to establish sites outside the boundaries of the Grant. I would believe villages, such as: Tinaja, Ocate, Springer, ect. were a result of this movement. Did the Grant hire gunmen to enforce this movement? Was the enfamous Santa Fe Ring gang involved with these actions? Was their ever any retrabutions for these actions? What was the criteria to allow certain families to remain?
