I know this is an old thread but I just signed up and was researching the same subject.
Jose Maria Mares of Black Lake was my Great Grandfather on my mothers side. His son was Frank Mares of Taos, NM. Jose Maria was full blooded Navajo. You can find quite a bit on the internet now just by searching. The only living sibling is Adelia Mares who is currently in the San Francisco area. I have her address somewhere.
