Classification: Query
Surnames: ROBERTS, RHEA, CRAIG, ROGERS
I have been researching my family history and discovered that my great great grandparents, Charles A. and Ruth Ann RHEA ROBERTS moved to the area around Raton, Colfax County, New Mexico in the 1890s with their five children (all under age 17), Charles Henry, Nellie, Stella, Della, and Jennie. Shortly after arriving in New Mexico, they died. The five children were separated. Charles Henry ROBERTS remained in Colfax County, New Mexico. The four girls went to live with relatives in Sac County, Iowa for a short time and then were divided.
Charles Henry ROBERTS lived in Raton, New Mexico and worked first for the Railroad and then for the city working at a dam, we believe. He died January 24, 1952 without marrying or having children.
Jennie ROBERTS remained in Iowa with Mrs. Arch F. RHEA, the widow of her uncle. Eventually she married someone with last name MONROE and died in Hugoton, Kansas. She did not have any children.
Stella (or Estella) ROBERTS was sent back to Raton, Colfax County, New Mexico where she lived with her brother, Charles Henry ROBERTS (known as Henry), and her uncle, Miller ROBERTS. She eventually married William T. Craig on February 27, 1905 in Raton and they lived with her brother Charles Henry ROBERTS. She died on April 12, 1915. She did not have any children.
Della ROBERTS was my great-grandmother. She moved to Noble County, Indiana and lived with her uncle, Robert RHEA. After that what happens is sketchy. According to what my grandfather was told, she met and married an Englishman named Alfred ROGERS and moved near Tampa, Florida. Either right before or right after having my grandfather Ralph Leroy on April 7, 1907, her husband died and her sister, Jennie ROBERTS, was sent to retrieve her and return her to family. We don't know how she ended up in Rock County, Minnesota, but she remarries on Sept 28, 1908 to Hupp TEVIS. She has two more children, Adelia and Sidney and then dies March 16, 1922 in Davenport, Iowa. My grandfather, Ralph TEVIS took the name of his step-father. After his mother's death he was sent to live with his uncle, Charles Henry ROBERTS in Raton, New Mexico. He ended up in South Dakota, married my grandmother, had three daughters and died February 11, 1954. He died without divulging much information about his family or his life. Recently, my mother and I have started digging up information and found what I have indicated thus far.
Nellie ROBERTS, the other sister, supposedly returned to New Mexico, got married and died in 1915 without having any children. She possibly married a Schoonover. Nellie may have been a nickname for Eleanor.
Both my great-great grandparents and my great-great aunts and uncles are buried in a cemetery in Raton, New Mexico. I believe that my uncle had an obituary published in the Raton Range. I live in Nebraska and cannot travel due to illness. I have unsuccessfully tried to call the Raton Library and the Raton Range for information and attempted to request cemetery books. Can anyone help me?? The family was Methodist Episcopal and I know that the headstones are marked because my mother saw them when she was very young, but does not remember what cemetery they were located at. Does anyone know anything about this family????
Thank you to anyone who can tell me anything about this family or how to obtain this information. Cemetery information, obituaries, school records, church records, anything.
