Can you tell a little more about this person? Do you know where the cave was or in what mountains? That would help narrow it down some. I live in Eddy County but I don't have access to any public records or anything like that. But I can ask around if you can tell me anything else about him.
Jacquelyn "Jackie" Faye Warnica Spence 1931-2011

December 29, 1931 - June 16, 2011

Jacquelyn Faye Warnica Spence, “Jackie”, was born December 29, 1931 in New Hobbs, New Mexico, the only child of Ralph Beaver Warnica and Lillian Fay Douglass. She passed away on June 16, 2011 in Artesia, N.M.
Jackie married James Solon Spence II on January 5, 1950. They spent their entire lives together farming the family farm in the Cottonwood community north of Artesia. Jackie was a stay-at-home mom, not working out of the home or off the farm until “the baby” started school.

Jackie worked at Artesia High School as an assistant librarian where she fed her love of books and her joy of working with young people. She loved the interaction with the students and faculty every day. From 1971 to 2001, she was the rural mail carrier out of the Lake Arthur post office. She loved to greet her customers, hand deliver their packages and know their families. Because of her punctuality and dedication to her job, her patrons relied on her timeliness on mail delivery. If she happened to be late, they would call Solon to see if something was wrong with Jackie. She was named Rural Mail Carrier of the year in 2000. She retired from the postal service in 2001 but continued to be active in 4-H and her church community.

She was a 4-H leader and fair judge for over 50 years. She and Solon were honored by the Eddy County Fair Board for their dedication and efforts to help with the building and development of the county fair and youth programs.

Jackie was a longtime member of the St. Anthony’s Altar Society and served as a lector at mass on a regular basis.

She loved to read and collect recipe books and novels. She maintained a great library at her home and loved to loan her books to other avid readers.

She loved to pick produce from her garden and share it with family and friends.

Jackie loved to play cards, gamble a little, and visit new places. In recent years she especially loved to attend legislative sessions, and to debate issues with several elected officials, especially Sen. Tim Jennings. She was a proud member of the National Rifle Association.

Her greatest love was her family, or as she commonly referred to them, “her footsteps into the future”.

Her husband, Solon, preceded her in death on June 16, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sister Janie, and a daughter-in-law Cheryl.

She is survived by he children: Mary Jane and spouse Larry Ward; Candy and spouse Calder Ezzell; Jim Spence and friend Carol Apple; Steve and spouse Shellye Spence; and Trampas and spouse Vicki Spence. Klein, Pug Thigpen, Jon Solt, Bill Johnson, Ross Menefee and Isadoro Delgado.

A rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 19, at Terpening & Son Chapel.

The original St. Francis (also known as Sisters Hospital) was at the corner of Fox and Halagueno Streets in Carlsbad, NM. It was in that location until at least 1950.

The oldest cemetery in Carlsbad is the Carlsbad Cemetery and that is most likely where you will find your answers.

My grandparents, Joel Warner Weldy and Mary Lee Gertrude Weldy had a baby that was probably stillborn. Dates of birth and death were 18 Aug 1926, in Carlsbad, Eddy Co., NM. Burial was also in Carlsbad. They had a large family and I don't know that they would have been able to afford burial in a cemetery. Back then, they may have buried their baby at home. How would I go about finding out the names of cemeteries that were there in 1926? Thank you so much,
Cathey Weldy Cline

I'm reminded of a trip my sister and I once made to the museum and arts center. They had on display a small silver pitcher. Not sure what the exact material was, but it had a label stating that it had been found in Cottonwood Cave in the Guadalupe Mountains outside Carlsbad. Although those hills were once an Apache stronghold, my grandparents lived up there during the 1920s when they were young and had just two small children, my father and his older sister. Grandpa herded goats in those mountains for a rancher named McCollum who lived in Dark Canyon about 3 miles down a very primitive road from the ranger lookout. They lived in a cabin with a tarpaulin roof in the area between the cave's mouth and where the ranger lookout now stands. That cave was their source of fresh water that Grandma hauled out on a daily basis, and a shelter during the wild storms that seem to crop up out of nowhere up there. She learned the hard way that she couldn't leave her young'uns during those trips. She emerged from the cave one day to find Daddy and his sister running wild across the ridge above the cave. After that she tied them to the bedstead, an act that would probably bring social services into the picture today, but was a necessity almost 90 years ago when Carlsbad and the amenities of town life was 60 miles down very primitive roads. I think it far more likely that the pitcher once belonged to my grandmother, but never mentioned it to the museum. Cathey

You are probably correct; I need to spend more time in the library before judging. My other research, at 4 libraries in Texas, was quite easy and the organization was intuitive, so I was surprised by my problems at Carlsbad. Otherwise, I enjoyed my trip out there, and look forward to coming back and staying a few days.

I don't know about the Carlsbad library, but a quick trip might not be doing library resources justice. Our library has a genealogy room with lots of books, not just on local history, but history of the American wars and the part our ancestors played in them. They have an index card box where you can write down the names you're interested in so that others can take a look and see if they can lend a hand. They also have the Polk City Directories going back decades and Sanborn fire insurance maps going back to 1909 here. They were made 1867 to 1970 and they cover more than 12,000 towns. They have a computer with access to genealogical resources that you might not have at home, such as Heritage Quest and Ancestry among others. Most libraries have a reference librarian, another valuable resource that shouldn't be allowed to go to waste :) Carlsbad also has a museum and art center at 418 W Fox St. that's bound to be full of local history.
Thank you so much. Have had this on my list for awhile and wondering if or when I could get to Carlsbad to do any research. I appreciate the time you spent getting it for me.
Wish it had more information in it...but that happens. Will need to try for the death certificate. Am trying to get evidence that this Felix Cook is my grand father's brother.
Was able to save the scan to a file for my records.
Janis
