The last time I tried to get a New Mexico death record (for 1968) I was told that I could not get a copy ......genealogy was not a good reason to order it. It had to be a "family member" ....it was my grandfather. I sent to Santa Fe for it. Maybe it was the year, being so recent, but they refused my request. He had only one child who is still living, and he is too ill to do it for me. I even said in my request that it did not have to be a certified copy. So has anyone else had this problem? Or is there another source to oder these records???? The sources that are links on the ancestry pages take you to a "paid" service are too expensive.
Urgent search for Joseph "Hatchet" Clarence STONE & Vera WEBER STONE married 1921

Vera's children by her 1st marriage, Joseph Weber & sister Marjorie Mabel Weber were recently reunited after being separated for 88 years as small children.

Joseph, aka Virgil Weber, age 92 is looking for his long lost birth mother. At age 90 and 92 they realize that there is not much time to find relatives or information before they both pass away.

Vera, nee Seagraves, Weber left him in 1920 at age 4 at St. Anthony's boys orphanage in Albuquerque, NM and his sister Marjorie Mabel, aka Mabel Inez, at age 2 with a foster family by the name of Horace & Claudia GAITHER in Amarillo, TX. It is thought that the Gaithers got Mabel as a foster child through Claudia's mother, Sallie DOBBS, that once lived in Roswell, NM near the Webers. Joseph was reunited with his birth father in the 1950's but they hadn't located Mabel at that time.

After searching for more than 50 years we have, by a wonderful miracle of God, just found Joseph's sister, age 90, alive in Potter Co, TX. They were reunited two weeks ago after being separated for 88 years. They are anxious to find out what happened to their birth mother who by all accounts intended to come back for them.

They are also anxious to find out if they have any half brothers or sisters by their mother Vera's second marriage to Joseph C. STONE and want to be reunited with them as well.

We know that Vera Weber did marry a 2nd time according to a newspaper article found in Deming, NM in October 1921.
Stone- Weber Friday, 14 Oct 1921
The marriage of Joe Stone of Central and Miss Vera Weber of Albuquerque, were married on Monday at the Baptist parsonage by Rev. J. J. Strickland - The Deming Headlight, Deming, NM

A marriage record found for Monday, 10 Oct 1921 in Deming, NM
Vera WEBER b. 18 Apr 1900 Louisiana, age about 22
Hatchet/Joseph Clarence STONE, age about 30
This record is reported to be signed by Hatchet Stone, so we believe that it might have been Joe's nickname or maybe that of a witness. Perhaps a brother? A copy of the record has been ordered to verify if it is the groom's name.

The WWI draft card in Grant Co, NM of 1917-1918 shows:
Joseph Clarence Stone, born 16 Sep 1892 at San Diego, CA
age 24, home in Hurley, NM, restaurant keeper, self employed,
Lists no dependents, claims physical defect of stiff arm, medium height and build, bown eyes and light brown hair.

STONE, Mrs. J.C. obit of Dec 1, 1933 in Curry co, NM
STONE, Mr. J. C. obit of Nov 17, 1930 in Curry Co, NM
I have not been able to find either Vera or Joseph in the 1930 census records. The above obits in Curry Co, NM are the only leads we have at this point that might be this couple. I cannot seem to find a death record for these two obits so I am wondering if they lived and died somewhere else and the obits were published in Curry county because they may have had relatives there?

Vera Seagraves Weber Stone is the daughter of Thomas S. & Ada Rowand SEAGRAVES. Vera had two brothers, Walter Dempsey and James Robert SEAGRAVES. They lived near Roswell, Chaves Co, NM between 1900 and 1918. Mabel was born at Artesia near Roswell, NM in 1918. The 1920 census shows Vera with 1st husband Kenneth P. WEBER, her father Thomas Seagraves and the children Virgil age 4 and Mabel Inez age 2 in Kingman, Kansas. Kenneth was avoiding the draft so he kept the family moving just one step ahead of the law. Vera's mother died in Wichita Falls, Texas in 1917 and is believed buried near Jonesboro, LA. Joseph left the orphanage at age 12 and began to work for local area ranchers. He married and had 3 daughters. Marjory Mabel married James N. Hudson of Texas and had two daughters.

Although we have found a Benjamin Hatchet Stone married to a Viola, an obit for Viola gives info that excludes her as Vera. This Stone Hatchet & Viola did live in Curry Co, NM. Could this be a brother of the Joseph Clarence Stone who had a restaurant in Hurley, NM in 1917-1918? This seems to be the burial info for Banjamin Hatchet and Viola Stone in the Fort Baynard National Cemetery in Grant Co, NM.
STONE, Benjamin Hatchet 11/30/1895-05/10/1984 US Army PVT
STONE, Viola 04/18/1901-11/21/1994 US Army Capt

ANY leads as to the whereabouts of Joseph and Vera Stone after their marriage in Oct 1921 in Deming, NM and any contacts for relatives or descendants would be greatly appreciated. Documents are needed.

Posted For: Joseph Weber and Marjorie Hudson
& Kathy Weber Cano, (Joseph's daughter)
Albuquerque, NM
by Deborah Slager, researcher, Daughters of the American Revolution e-mail fireraven@insightbb.com
Note: that e-mail may change shortly so phone calls are welcomed.
Polo, IL 815-946-2255

Both died in El Paso,TX-she on Nov 11,1953 and he on Sept.15,1976. (Enter the name, and the place as "El Paso,Texas,United States"--it's a new system and sometimes there are glitches!)
You might go here:
http://raogk.com/search.html
and search for volunteers in El Paso County,TX: there is one who will look for obits in the El Paso Times-just click on her name to send her a request. Obit for Miller Mitchell might help with surviving family.

Would you happen to have a current email for her or know how to contact her? If you could please forward this to her. My g.g. grandmother was Guadalupe Prieto, she passed shortly after childbirth in 1880 in Silver City, NM. Her sister was Felicita Prieto(was married 3 times: Leyva,Lascurin,Montes) and a brother named Mauro Prieto.

Just trying to find out if they were born in Guanajuanto, MX or Texas. In the baptism records of St. Vincent de Paul Church it states their parents were Juan Prieto and Dolores Gonzales. Just trying to find that side of the family.

Vital records for Santa Rita were moved to Santa Fe. You might also find some records with Kennecott, but you might not have much luck in that direction since the company running the El Chino mine at that time was the Chino Minig Company. Since then, Santa Rita changed hands to Kennecott Copper Corporation in 1937, and then Kennecott sold 1/3 to Mitsubishi Corporation in 1980 and Phelps Dodge Corporation bought the rest from Kennecott in 1987. Of course, the city had vanished by that time.

Silver City, a city founded by spillover from the 49ers, was the big city at that time. About a decade before your grandmother's birth, Santa Rita merely served as a fort location for the army garrison that was there to protect the Gold and Silver prospectors from Apache attack.

Records of the birth may have been kept in Silver City, since Santa Rita has the distiction of being a company-owned town. I don't know where in Silver City they would have beenkept, but hopefully not at the Hospital. The hospital in Silver City was burnt down sometime in the 1950's or 1960's

As stated previously, birth certificates were not issued in New Mexico at the time of your grandmother's birth.

I wish you luck in your search. I am having issues getting information on lineage in Santa Rita as well. My grandmother was also born in Santa Rita.

Thanks, Janet, for your reply. I was afraid I wouldn't find Luther, but it was worth the try. I can't imagine both he and his daughter not having a headstone. Of course after Luther died, his wife remarried and her new husband, Walter I. Belford worked in the copper mine at Santa Rita as a drill foreman. When he died, she moved back to Illinois. Luther and baby Faye must be buried in Memory Lane since her name is in the index, but strange that his isn't. Thanks again, Nancy

I am looking for the death and burial place of my niece and nephew's grandfather, Luther E. Nicholson. He was a "Steam Engineer" at the copper mines in Santa Rita, New Mexico in 1910. He was born in Tennessee in about 1884. He supossedly died 10 Jan 1914, but records don't show where. His wife's name was Stella Byrem Nicholson. His daughter, Lucille Emma Nicholson, was born 18 Sep 1911 in Santa Rita, New Mexico. If anyone knows where Luther is buried or has seen his grave, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Perhaps someone can steer me to the place where I can find this info. Thanks in advance.
Nancy

Hi there, have you already seen this 1880 census image? Is this your man? Preliminary searches of Silver City records haven't yielded anything, but that time period is kind of tough... not lots of records before the turn of the century.

http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbi...

Robert Athon Barnes aka "Bob Athon" in Silver City

I am researching my great great grandfather Robert Athon Barnes Sr., who lived in Silver City, New Mexico for many years. He was extremely active in the growing city's activities and is buried in the Masonic Cemetery there. I have managed to find tons of newspaper articles on this man, spanning most of his life and have even found two photographs of him through the Silver City Museum. I am hoping to find someone out there who might have known Robert Athon Barnes, or "Bob Athon," as he went by. As I said, he was a very active individual and I am hoping some one might have other photographs or might have know him, or his last wife Lottie (Abraham) Barnes.

Some good information is in his obituary:

Robert Athon Barnes, also know by his stage name "Bob Athon" was the head of a stock company which toured the United States and Canada for much of his early adult life. This is presumably how he met Rita Hauswirth. The two married for a short time, during which their son Robert Athon Barnes Jr (later renamed Robert William Barnes in honor of his stepfather) was born. The couple seperated, however, before Robert Athon Barnes Jr was three years old. Robert Athon Barnes Sr moved to Silver City, New Mexico, where he married his second wife Lottie Abraham in 1924. He lived in Silver City for nearly 35 years until his death. "Robert Athon Barnes, 81, president and manager of the Parkway Realty & insurance Co and pioneer resident of Silver City, passed away Sunday morning at Hillcrest General hospital following a brief illness. His death occurred on his 35th wedding anniversary. Born in Bedford, Indiana, June I, 1877, his early adult life was spent in the theatrical world as head of his own stock company, which toured the United States and Canada. Also, over a period of years, he was a national crusader against illegal traffic in narcotics, lecturing before colleges and, high schools. His first job in New Mexico was at Deming where he served a short time as secretary of the Chamber of Commerce. In 1924 he married Lottie Abraham and had resided here for 35 years. He was best known as Bob Athon, his stage name. He took an active and leading part in all activities for the progress of the community and had utmost faith in the progress of Silver City and Grant County and expansion of its metal mining and livestock industries. He had a happy philosophy of life instilled in him during the early years he was engaged in show business. His philosophy was contagious among his wide circle of friends and business associate. For more than 50 years Mr. Athon was a member of the Walla Walla, Washington, Elks Lodge and a life member. His lodge activities continued here with the Elks. He was also a member of the Independent Order of Odd-Fellows Lodges and Taper Rebekah Lodge at Bayard, and was affiliated with the Grant County Realtors, the New Mexico State Realtors and the Chamber of Commerce. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Cox Mortuary chapel, the Rev. Charles S. Walker, of the First Methodist Church officiating. Ritualistic services also were held by the IO.O.F. Lodge, followed by committal rites at the graveside in the Masonic cemetery by officers of the Elks Lodges. Serving as pallbearers were FL. L. Wilson, G. 0. Burchfield, L. P. Barto, Bob Gillespie, George Gaylord, Clifton L. Reed. Honorary pallbearer was R. L. Saunders." [from Robert Athon Barnes`s 1959 obituary]

If anyone acquainted with Silver City history has any information or suggestions, or, again, anyone might have known Bob (I realize he died a long time ago, but it is still possible that someone living could have known or met him) please leave a post as I would deeply appreciate it.

Tom Harrington Family

I am looking for any living member of the Tom Harrington Family.
I remember visiting Mrs Harrington and making an oral history of the ranch from the first days it was settled. I remember she had the three daughters who were ranchers as well.

I have something that belongs to that family and have no idea how to find them.
I remember Jeniveve had a ranch on the east side of the river just north of the old Harrington ranch headquarters.
I had lunch there at the ranch when the archeologists were there digging the first Members River indian remains on her ranch. These men talked to me and explained their frustration about not finding pottery that did not have a hole in the bottom of the bowl. They did not understand at that time about the hole allowing the spirit to escape after the burial.

Another daughter lived in Demming.

Feel free to contact me at:
denimpat@gmail.com
