My Dad (Bennie Brooks) always said that he was buried at Shakespeare cemetery but he could never find the grave. His brother Homer Brooks looked also and couldn't find it. He said that he died of wounds that he had in the civil war. Do you have any idea which company he was in? Are you related to Ruby Sanders? She was my Dad's cousin.

I would be glad to exchange pictures or stories about the old ranch.
You might try the mortuaries listed at http://www.hidalgocountynewmexico.org/mort.html and if you get a death certificate with a date, you could try the papers. I believe the County Clerk has copies of all the old newpapers, but I doubt they could/would do a look-up w/o an exact date.

Good luck!

Pat

Does anyone remember seeing the big old wooden windmill with great big wooden wheel that was on the east side of the old road going from Lordsburg to Duncan? I wonder if anyone ever took a picture of it? I was always sorry that I didn't take a picture. If anyone knows of a picture of this old windmill, I'd love to have a copy of it. The last time I saw it, it was just a big pile of boards and a new metal windmill had taken it's place. I'll be waiting for a reply.
Nancy E. Brown

Lordsburg was in Grant County until sometime in 1919. Per my 2 books on place names, there's never been a Lerdsburg. Those precincts were all in the southern part of Grant Count that was eventually made into Hidalgo County.

Sounds like the Census taker didn't know where he was? (1900 u s census says lerdsburg, or couldn't write.)

Pat

If unknown to you: Zola apparently died of complications of childbirth-there were twin boys born to her and Robert Hurley who did not survive: Donald who died Dec.10,1936,and Ronald who died the next day. (They are all buried in unmarked graves.)
Record of this can be found here:
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=coll...

If you are not a user-free or paid--of ancestry.com; there is an extensive family tree for the Bogarts there in the "public member trees", which has photos of Zola, her parents, etc.

Cloverdale as it exists today would be considered a "ghost town". It was built as a farm/ranch town, and never had a population of more than about 200. Many Hughes families resided in Hidalgo county in the time frame you mention per census records-although it would have been Grant County pre-1919.

Hello!
You are correct. I still have not deterimed why those links do not work but try this link to the cemetery listings.
http://newmexicoalhn.net/hidalgo/cemeteries.html

Also if you like history about outlaws, this link will take you to a story I worked on for many years. I finally got to the truth after checking Arizona and NM death certficates and cemetery listings.
http://newmexicoalhn.net/lincoln/lees_grave.htm

If you still can not view those links, send me an email jcnreno@charter.net (temp address)
and I will send you the link to a faster web site with the same information.
Thank you for reporting the error. If you have any information about Hidalgo County NM of historical of family history, I will publish it on that web site.
Charles

Please email me at nanhow36@dishmail.net and I will see what I can send you via email. What is your family names?
I have a zerox of the 1947 telephone directory, and a few church records I could look in for your family name, but you didn't say who they are. The only wrecker service listed in that directory is Hidalgo Garage at 338 E. Railroad Ave. and the Motor Sales Co., also on Railroad Ave. There is a Joe's Garage on the Deming Highway.

A few names I remember from "back when"
Kerr, Smith, Heather, Baxter,Arrendondo Grocery, Saucedo Grocery, Bowman, Gay, Dr. DeMoss, Wright, Pennington, Payne

Dear Nancy,

I am trying to join the DAR. I have the marriage certificate from Washington Co, MO for Albert Lewis and Rhoda Brickey, which says they were married in the presence of their parents. I also have the Land Tracts which shows that Jeremiah Brickey and Albert's lands were near eachother. Raymond's book lists Rhoda as a daughter- which is common knowledge- but do we have any proof of who Jeremiah's daughters are ? Any obituaries that mention their names ? Thanks for any help you may be able to give.
Toni

I haven't done any cemetery surveys, but am in the process of putting together (for the Hidalgo Co. website and the Lordsburg Hidalgo County Library)....a bio of the lives of the people I knew at Lordsburg, Steins, Gary and some of the Railroaders....it isn't a lot, but I spent 10 years of my life in the railroad towns, and grandparents lived at Lordsburg for many years, as well as Aunts and Uncles and some others who are buried at the Mountain View Cemetery.
I will be donating what I come up with to the website that Pat Bennett maintains,as well as to the County Lib. there in Lordsburg. Don't know if this is what you are looking for. Find-A-Grave is a great place to submit the cemetery information to as well...I have found several relatives just by going there for information.
Thanks, Nancy

I'm rather behind on my e-mail and I apologize for being so slow to respond. Please do contact me as we might be of the same line. The Brickey line is part of my maternal grandfather's people (my grandfather is Robert C. Eades). I've not been actively working that line (Eades/Brickey) as I have discovered a relative who has already researched it and I hope to secure a copy of that. And it's that researched copy that will help me to better determine where some of us fit on the family bush. Thanks.
