Dear F. Alavare

I believe we're related. I have some information below that should establish our "primo-ship." If so, I'd appreciate being able to share common information with you. Please feel free to comment, correct, enhance, question, etc. any information. It's better to confirm and retract than to have erroneous data.

Thanks.

By the time Nellie was six years old (1925), her family had left Coyote, NM, lived in Tiffany by Ignacio, CO and was on its way to live in Durango, CO with grandfather Jose Dolores Martinez.

Nellie attended Park School in Durango. She lived with her grandfather, uncles, aunts, and cousins. When Nellie went Pagosa Springs, CO to live with her parents, she fussed so they sent her back to Durango.

She had to take the 5th grade twice, walked 2-3 miles to school in Edith, CO and attended the 7th grade in Pagosa Springs, CO. In Edith, when the weather was bad, she got to stay with the Lucio Cruz family who lived nearer to the schoolhouse.

Nellie dropped out of school after the 7th grade and worked washing dishes at a restaurant, washed and sterilized milk bottles at Corrigan's dairy farm, did housework and cooking for Daly and Fern Hot, and housework for Goodman's for $3 per week. Goodmans commented that "the porch was clean and neat just like the inside." She also worked for Suttons, Elaine and Frank Sturdevant, performing childcare and housework duties.

In 1938 she met Henry Montoya through her sister Leonarda who was a friend of Senaida, Henry's sister. After a six-month courtship, Nellie and Henry got married. Nellie said a letter or two may have been exchanged during their courtship. Henry was herding sheep for Carlos Harris in Trujillo at the time they got married. They lived in an old house at Harris' for about six months and also tended animals. Nellie also lived with Henry's grandparents on a farm near Rio Navajo at Blanquito.

In the early 1940s they lived in Pagosa Springs, CO, Lumberton, NM, Chama, NM and back in Pagosa. In Pagosa, they worked at the Corrigan's dairy farm for one year. Henry also worked for the Rural Electrification Association (REA) digging telephone pole holes and spraying in the hills. They lived in Tia Manuelita Montoya's house in Pagosa. In addition, Henry worked for a lumber company. They also operated a liquor establishment for Lionel Archuleta in Lumberton. Neitzel's (later Schutz') and Adolfo Ortiz' stores were their primary sources for groceries.
