Rufus Lockwood enlisted in Olean 1918 - can't find enlistment record

I have notes written many years ago when I was a child, apparently copied from my grandfather's enlistment records. The records have apparently been lost over the years, and I can find no record of his enlistment, nor WWI draft registration, online. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

My notes say he enlisted on 23 Feb, 1918, at Olean, NY, at the age of 18 as a fireman with the rank of private, in Co A, 21st Bn, USG. Attached to S Co. 22nd Bn, 158 D.B. for discharge. His service number was 1299434.

I know I can order records from GSA, but I cannot find any record of the units mentioned in the notes, and want to make sure my info. is correct. My grandmother said he was a cook stationed in Texas during the hunt for Pancho Villa.

ENOCH MAXSON - age 100 (Jan 15, 1922)

**Courtesy Posting only - the contributor is not connected to this family**

OLEAN EVENING HERALD SATURDAY EVENING, JAN 14, 1922

ENOCH MAXSON BECOMES 100 YEARS OLD TOMORROW
Olean Will Have a Centenarian Aged Southside Awaken Sunday, January 15 (1922)

Before tomorrow is past Olean will have a centenarian, unless the unexpected should happen and the aged person pass away. He is Enoch MAXSON living at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. JAMES KELSEY at 120 Riverside Avenue. He confidently expects to pass his 100th milestone sometime Sunday, January 15, and inasmuch as he is about the house and eating three squares a day, his expectations are more than reasonable.
Mr. Maxon's daughter is Mrs. ADA FREEMAN, who also resides at the Kelsey residence.
Enoch Maxson was born January 15, 1822 in the state of Rhode Island and moved with his parents when he was 9 years old to Main Settlement about three miles east of Portville. When he arrived at manhood he became a riverman employed in those early days of lumbering in rafting on the Allegany River. Later and for many years he engaged in farming. His wife died some ten or twelve years ago and since that time he has lived in Olean.
Maxson appears to be in remarkably good health considering his age and takes an especial delight in talking of his early experiences when this country was most of it a virgin forest.
Hoping someone can direct me to the right person or library in Cattaraugus County who can be of assistance. I would like an obituary for a Fred Bennett, died April 1953 and is buried in Steamburg Cemetery. Is there a certain library in the county which holds newspaper archives? I would also like to correspond with anyone who has any information about Fred Bennett. He has Missouri connections - had a family in Marshall, MO before moving back to his home state of NY after a car accident in 1946 which killed his wife and daughters.
I am hoping one of you great genealogists will help find William Rose. Where were he and his parents born? He was in Cattaraugus County in 1820. Who were his family members? I am hoping to find if he is related to Jerome Rose born about 1817 in Ontario County. Jerome's parents are listed in his census as father born in PA, and mother born in RI. Jerome lived in Olean and Portville, NY.
thank you, Nancy

I am looking for information about Daisy Buvoltz. She was b. 8/23/1894 and d. 12/31/1989 and is in the Steamburg Cemetery. I have just found a note that claims that she could be a relative of mine. I am trying to find out who her parents were. Does anyone know? I have been told that her father was John Keniston/Kenniston but would like to verify that and find out her mother's name also. Having died in 1989 and not a direct relative I can not get a death record so I can not look in that direction. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello,

I am still looking for information on Moses Swarthout (Swartwout). I am trying to prove a connection between Andrew Swarthout who Married Polly Beckley and Moses. I beleive that Moses might be Andrews father. Any documented proof such as church records, birth records would be a great help.

I have made a trip to Otsego County and Orange County although I have found a lot of information on the Swarwout family, I can not find any documention that would prove this connection. However I am 99.9% sure that I am on the right track. Moses Swarthout married Martha Hawley (Holley, Andrew Swarthout has a son named Andrew Hawley* and a son named Aaron Moses*, also the 1800 census puts Moses in Otsego County where Andrew was born. I am in desperate need of some souce information to prove this link. Please contact me for anything.

Thanks in advance

Melissa Rinker
Melrinker@aol.com

Looking for information on James Andrew Brown. He was born 9 Nov 1844 in Little Valley, NY. On the 1900 United States Census, James Brown is found in Big Creek Township, Taney, Missouri with his wife Laura Ona (Lewallen) and children. On that census, it shows that his father was born in Germany, and his mother was born in New York. It is thought that Laura was the second wife of James. I have no information on his first wife or where he may have lived before settling in Missouri. Any information on his parents, siblings, or first wife would be greatly appreciated.
Is Emmeline LEWIS MCCLURE (1814/1817-1882) of Washington Twp, Macomb Co MI his daughter? Her death record gives them as her parents. She married Joseph Grice MCCLURE (1802-1874). Is he the son of Joseph MCCLURE of Franklinville, Cattaraugus Co. who went to Canada?

My grandfather Guy Irvin Benson was born in Cattaraugus County at Red House, New York.

I have heard my grandmother talk of Wolf Run, and the Upper and Lower Haskell near Portville many times as a child.

I am presently researching the Oakley and Benson Families. I f you have any information on these families or if you know anything about Red House I would appreciate hearing from you. I have had a lot of difficulty trying to find information about Red House and the Benson family who lived there, Guy's parents were Daniel Wellington Benson and Emma Melissa Grover. His grandfathers were Wellington Benson and Sylvester Grover. Sylvester Grover and his son B.L.Grover were both ministers but I do not know of what faith.

I also would like to know if anyone has a any information on Steamburg and Steamburg Cemetery. The Benson's are buried in Steamburg Cemetery.

Thank you.

PattZ@worldnet.att.net
worldnet.att.net
His mother's will in 1896 gives him the right to purchase her house in Delevan; we have no proof he did. He is buried Siloam Cemetery, Freedom. He died Jan 1938.
His spouses were Anna Sergel ( 1858-1919) and Inez Connor Andrews (1873-1938)

I am looking for marriage and surname information on the wife of Truman Jackson Alger. He was born in 1808. He came to NYCatt in 1819 with his older brother, Oliver Alger, at age 11, from Boston, Erie, NY. By 1835 another brother has joined them, Syrel/Saral Alger and they are all farming in Freedom. The NY State census of 1835 shows him with a wife and son. He is only 17 with a two year old son and a wife whose name we know is Charlott, born in Oneida Co in 1799. In a later cenus she says her father was from Mass. and her mother from Conn.
They would have possibly married about 1832 or 1833 in Freedom or Yorkshire.
Cattaragus County, NY????

One of my husband's cousin's found an obit. for his great-grandmother, ANNA SERGEL BROWN(1858-1919), wife of BYRON BROWN, listing her as 'to be buried in "Schutt's Corners Cemetery". We want to find the cemetery.

ANNA SERGEL was born in Holland, NY and died in Elton, NY. We have searched every rural cemetery between the two towns, including one on a Schutt's Road near Rt. 39.

While we did locate people we believe to be her parents and brother (and his wife) in Sardinia Cemetery, we have not found Anna or Byron.

As we know where most everyone else in his family is buried, we would really like to find ANNA & BYRON BROWN.
Looking for someone to see if there is a record of a marriage between Abram Smith and Armenia Drew in Cattaraugus Co on Thanksgiving Day in 1853. Abram was born on 6/21/1831 in Cattaraugus Co and Armenia was born on 1/29/1834 in Napoli, Cattaraugus Co, NY. I'm guessing that their actual marriage date was 11/24/1853.
They had 5 children all born in Great Valley, Cattaraugus Co, NY
Adelbert, Submitta Anna, Thomas, Josephine and Sarah according to the 1870 census. Abram's name is mispelled as Abel but it is him. I realize that this is a needle in a haystack, but any help would be appreciated.
Darcy Brown

She had a lot of pictures and history of the McCarty's in the Limestone area.
If there is anyone alive who knew her or what happened to all of her family keepsakes, I would like to communicate with them. Catherine Ryan is a Granddaughter of Martin McCarty, my Great Grandfather.

Their children were Olive, Roswell, Buel, who died in the Civil War, Corydon, Sylva, Harrison, Ruth, Celinda, George and Arthur Isaac.

If anyone know if there is a connection between Zylpha Beacha and Philander and Lewis BEACH, who moved to Cattaraugus County around the same time, would be appraited.
Does anyone know of "haunted" ground called Gurnsey Hollow or Gurnsey Cemetery. It's somewhere off in Catt. County somewhere. It's said that sounds of footsteps echo through this area, and the ground even "glows" at night. I'd be interested in finding out more.

Looking for info on Martin McCarthy. Martin immigrated from Co. Clare, Ireland around 1850 at age 12. He married Catherine Corry. They lived in Nichols Run. They had 12 children.
One child was Margaret McCarthy who married John Ryan. They lived in Limestone and their daughter Catherine M. Ryan lived and died there (1914-1972) and is buried in Limestone cemetery. One other daughter was Agnes McCarthy (my Grandmother). I have a picture of Martin McCarthy's home in Nichols Run, where she was raised.
Would like to know about any cemeteries in Limestone or Nichols Run where I might find birth and death dates for any of the above.

Only info I have, is that they were husband and wife as of 1924-25, and I think divorced later.
Margaret had a son born March 1925 in Salamanca, who was given up for adoption (I think because Jimmy was not the father). The son's adoption was in McKean Co.,PA. in 1925.
My initial search has lead me to Lamont
& Tillie Jefferds. I traced Lamont a little further back.
He would be the son of Melville Owel Jefferds & Emma
J Harding.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I would be interested
in hearing from you if so.

My cousin's Dad left NY a long time ago, so there is
no longer any contact with New York. All the descendants
live in the West ( mostly San Diego).

Thank you very much if you can help.

Sincerely,

Barbara Joly

Looking for info on the owner of a store in Ashford, NY

I am looking for descendants of George Evans who owned a store in Ashford, Cattaraugus Co., NY. I am his gg granddaughter. I am in possession of some tin "coins' that say Geo. A. Evans, Ashford, NY on one side and good for 50 cents worth of merchandise on the other. These coins are about the size of a quarter. There are some smaller ones for 5 and 10 cents as well. What I know about George Evans is as follows:

John Evans (father of George) was born in Germany in 1838 died 1905. His parents were both born in Germany. John immigrated to the US in 1852 and married May M. who was born in NY in 1839 and died 1921. Her parents were both born in France. In 1880 census in Boston, New York family is listed as John, age 42, Mary, age 41, Ida, born 1867, George, born 1870, Mary born 1879, Arthur born 1871 died 1922, Hattie born 1872, Charles born 1874, Franklin D. born 1877 (died as a child ?? no death date available), Clark, born 1880 and died 1912. John, May M. (Mary on the stone), Arthur, Franklin and Clark are buried in Fairview Cemetery in SPRINGVILLE, NY. George, born 1870, married another Mary who produced Raymond Evans born in 1899 and died in 1984 in SPRINGVILLE, NY. He married Ruth Ackie Clark, daughter of Timothy Clark. I cannot find anything prior to 1880 on the EVANS family.

Glovers in 1800? Also Fish & Boardman....

I'm trying to find more about a group of Glover siblings who were born in Washington Co., NY, moved to Cattaraugus Co., NY with their family. I feel like their father is Ezra Glover, but am not certain. The 4 of them moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan about 1837. They were: Hannah E. (b 1804, married to Ephraim Fish), John G. (b 1809, married to Eunice Archibald), Eleanor Ann (b 1816, married to Samuel J. Boardman), and Charlotte D. (b 1821, unmarried).

I believe Eleanor Boardman had 4 sons; Alonzo Boardman who returned to Cattaraugus, NY and 3 who remained in Michigan. I've seen Probate Court documents in which Samuel Boardman petitions for the settlement of the Joshua Boardman estate.

Does this ring any bells with anyone? Would appreciate any discussion. Thank you...
Mary Ann

Humphrey, Cattaraugus County, New York was the birth place of my grandfather-Forest John Woodruff in 1869. His parents were Clinton Daniel Woodruff and Julia Mae Watkins, daughter of John Harrison Watkins and wife Rhoby, maiden name unknown. John Watkins was the son of Abner and Marion Watkins. This family lived in Asford and Great Valley. There may be a connection to Zephy Watkins. Clinton Daniel Woodruff was the son of Charles C Woodruff and Caroline Reynolds. There are listed on the 1840 census living in Humphrey. Their two oldest daughters were born in Ohio.
The oldest daughter, Mary , married Harvey Pierce. Charles C. and Caroline both died in Humphrey in 1879. Any information would be appreciated and I would be glad to share information.
Searching for any info concerning Eells families living in Cattauraugus Co., Perrysburg, early 1800's, then moved to IL. Also, Charles Tull was on 1830 census, Perrysburg. His sister, Maria Tull, married James Eells, Perrysburg, 1831. Descendants from his first wife, Harriett Gaylord, may still be in Cattauraugus Co. Charles & Maria's sister, Caroline Tull married Alvah M. Denton, moved to IL 1834. Any tidbit would be appreciated.
