OLIVER SPAFFORD and LUCINDA BURTON.
Married in Portland, Chautauqua County, N. Y. In 1817, after varied adventures, they settled in Cincinnati (numbering then but a few hundred people), where he engaged in the book trade, publishing (besides a directory of the place) "Webster's Elementary Spelling Book" and "The American Preceptor," a once noted school reading book. After one or two other changes, he came to Erie, Eire CO, Pa., in 1828, where he became the founder of a large and successful publishing concern, and where he passed the remainder of his life, which closed Sept. 30, 1881, his wife having died Jan. 6, 1885, aged 62. During his long career, from the experiences of an enterprising pioneer life to the sunset of a tranquil old age, he was a man of active mind, broad ideas, and large influence.
