Here is the information from the 1865 NY State Census Town 0f Poland family
number 276.

STAFFORD
Abel age 45 male born Chaut. Co., NY Married once farmer owns
Minerva age 41 female wife born Chaut. Co., NY has given birth to 8
children
Minerva age 19 f dau born Chaut. Co., NY Single
Gabel age 17 male son born Chaut. Co., NY single
Orsa age 15 male son born Chaut. Co., NY
Austin age 11 male son Born Chaut. Co., NY
Jane age 9 female dau born Chaut. Co., NY
Bertha age 7 female dau born Chaut. Co., NY
Grant age 2 male son born Chaut. Co., NY

This accounts for 7 of the 8 children born to Minerva. The 8th may already
be md. I found Sumner Smith age 23 with his parents and still single also
in Town of Poland.

On the 1875 census - Town of Poland family number 7
STAFFORD
Abel age 56 m Chenango Co., NY Married Farmer/carpenter/joiner o
Minerva age 51 f wife Chaut. Co., NY Married
Austin age 22 m son Chaut. Co., NY Single
Bertha age 17 f dau Chaut. Co., NY
Grant age 12 m son Chaut. Co., NY
McClellen age 9 m son Chaut. Co., NY
Linn age 5 m son Chaut. Co., NY

from above you can approximate dates of birth.

mentioned in Centennial History of Chautauqua County
Vol. 1 page 326 is Austin Stafford.

also on pages 502 and 503 is an Austin H. Stafford. and he is on page 547 of
Vol. 2 an A. H. Stafford Vol 1 pg 557 and Vol 2 pgs 353 and 358.

I only have the index here at home. Can look these up on next Tuesday.

Hope this is of some help.

Viola R. Harrington was my Grandfather, William D. Harrington's sister. She married Austin J. Stafford (1854-1934) Dec. 22, 1876. She was born Dec. 10, 1859 and died 1945 and is buried in Levant Cemetery. I have listed one child Ina B. Stafford 1878-1881. I would appreciate any further information that you have.

Thanks for the replies folks,
regarding: Austin H Stafford He's not related so far at this point. My line is directly from Austin James Stafford. While going thru the County land records in Mayville, I see that Austin H. was a County Clerk while going to Law School and He and His wife gathered and held a lot of property and latered sold. He apparently opened a Law Pracitice.

I have taken Pictures in Kennedy Cemetery and came upon 2 pairs of Stones of Charles PHELPS and Bertha STAFFORD PHELPS AND Sumner and Ellen STAFFORD Smith. A Clerk at Poland City hall had just sent me info confirm burial of Charles PHELPS and Bertha PHELPS. However, she shows that he died 23 Nov 1909 in Blockville,NY and I saw a granite stone in Kennedy. I also found entried in 1930 Federal Census to be posted later.

re:
"in 1920 FAY is in POLAND Ny
he lives a few doors from brother Austin, FAY is 34 MARRIED but no wife here, probably divorced, no child either, his son Austin, should be about 3 not found "

I know that FAY is actually Austin James sons ( 1 of 5+ 2 daugthers) and is a farmer in the area. Fay and Mc Lellen(Austin's younger brother Mack [nickname]) worked together with Mack's grandson that parents separated/Divorced at age 4 ( per Telco interview 22 Nov 2002)
Austin died 16 August 1934 (Obits)
Kind of explains why Inez(Ina) Bell was transferred from Tucker/Drybrook to Levant since there is a combined stone for the Three of them
"Austin, Ina Bell, Viloa" The dates matched perfectly.

With this info I can now have some dates to look up at the Pendergast Library holding of newspaper on Microfilm

Thanks alot

How can I acquire index/info like your's and Donna's for my own library?
I still have more people in the area to lookup.

The 1870 census shows Worthy Smith, 21, an unmarrried stonemason; on same page is a Fenton family. On next page, Sumner Smith 29, druggist, md. with wife Ellen and sons Wm. and Ford; next door to Sumner is Susan Smith, 33 (possibly 35?) with Matt 13 and Lewis 18. I'm not sure I understand what the question was about Susan, but I hope this helps a bit.

Don't know if this will help. but in the 1820 census index, a Lyba Barden is the only Barden listed in Franklin Co. NY, in Bangor. On the next page is Ebenezer Saxton, the only Saxton in Franklin County that year, also in Bangor.

There were 3 Saxtons in Chautauqua co. in 1820 - Wm. and
Charles in Portland and Jeremiah in Ellicott. The only Barden was Enos, in Ripley.

There are many Bardens and Saxtons listed in the Chautauqua co. index by 1860, but no Liba/Lyba or Persis..

Seymour and Hosea Saxton are listed among original purchasers of land in Ellington (Twp. 3, range 10) in Chautauqua co. in the 1820s.

A note for myself and others...

Isabelle Stafford appears to be the same as "Belle" Fuller mentioned in the 1910 and 1920 Census and Land records when Austin and Lynn and Mack sold the OLD Homestead. She may have been one of the Beneficiaries, since her death is cited in the deed transfer.

Who was she married to? Where is she buried?
Any info beyond ancestry and rootsweb would be appreciated.
Thanks

Note to Others...
Ellen Stafford Smith is the daughter of Abel and Minerva Stafford of Poland, NY Ellen may well have been born at the base of the "Tucker" Cemetery( Drybrook ) in a log cabin as shown on OLD Maps of the Area.

I've not been able to acquire any Vitals records at this time.

Viola R. Harrington was my -----"Grandfather"------?, William D.

Marlene, Did you mean Grandmother?

Howdy, I'd might be, if they are from the BIG STAFFORD Branch descended from Roger Williams of Providence Rhode Island. One of his grand Daughters married a Ship Capt. Thomas STAFFORD and immigrated to the US. Best I could tell the Branch I'm tracing ascend up from Chautauqua County to Chenango County to Vermont. A BIG W.I.P. project. See all my posts and see if your STAFFORD connects to mine. Within Chautauqua and Cattaraugus County, the known residence are Poland Center/Kennedy, Ellington, Randolph, and in Preston, Chenango County

note to self and others...
regarding the 11 Children, There seems to be others that died (as children) in between Census. William and Jennie and Jane are not mentioned.
I've just cleaned the Stafford Monument at Tucker Cemetery ( Drybrook) and was too dark to transcribe and had to return home. Could anyone be so kind to transcribe and post the details on some children engraved on the 4 sides of the Stafford Monument.

I'll have to research further in the Kennedy records for clarifications.
Any Collateral info would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I believe the year of his death would be 1905. He was married in 1845, and would have been married 60 years in March of the year he died.

Howdy,
I appreciate calculated reckoning of the Clipping, I was more interested in a more objective and factual year of death for Abel, like in a form of citing of the clipping I mentioned.

Thanks
